My daughter is in an interracial relationship and everyone is so racist

Hello everyone, I really hoped I'd never had to make a post like this but here I am. As the title says, my daughter who is 15 is in a relationship with a black guy from her school. For some reason, that is a problem for many people around us. She's been with him for about 7 months and in that time so many people have just started to be horribly racist.

The kids at her school have started calling her horrible names such as "mudshark" and started making fun of the way she dresses, talks and the music she listens to. My own sister has talked to me and said how I'm insane letting her date him and dress like "ghetto" and that he will hurt her, which is absolutely disgusting to say. I don't think that there's anything wrong with her dating him and engaging in the culture, on the contrary I think it's amazing, but the pressure is getting sort of hard to manage.

Has anyone had any similar experiences? I'd love advice on how I should go about supporting my daughter despite everyone being against her for no reason.

Neighbours either side rampant racists fully paid up reform members . Both older males . One is poorly but refuses to see anyone not pure white ( his words ) in the NHS . His wife is dying and he is dependant on her I'm afraid he will get an almighty shock in a care home ( I worked in many staff were all creeds and colours and the most uncaring ones I encountered were ' pure white ')
I have lovely mixed race relatives and have run out of arguments . Neither man is very bright and they have been brainwashed in my opinion

Wow, I'm in and out of care homes with work all the time, and I have come across some incredible 'all white' carers, and some dangerously incompetent black and other minority ethnic carers, and vice versa, likewise doctors, nurses and every other flavour of HCP.

Your comment is as racists as your neighbours.

I know people blame Reform but I think many peoplw are racist

absolutely. we wouldn’t have reform/restore if people didn’t want it. like trump. he’s in the white house because some people REALLY like how hatey he is.

Mud shark? In 2026? By teenagers? That’s strange

It is strange. So is the continued absence of the OP.

Absolutely. I’m white, my husband isn’t and it’s absolutely mind blowing the amount of every day racism that people who aren’t white encounter. Things that you would never ever think about.

We’ve been evicted because they ‘didn’t realise’…told to me in a confiding way like because I am white, I’d be on their side. My daughter had had a punnet of blackberries she was picking in the park taken off her because it’s ’not allowed’. My dd was put in isolation for having blonde extensions because the rule is, you can’t have hair that is an unatural colour and she’s not capable of having blonde hair. But white girls can dye their hair blonde . My dh stopped going jogging and had to join the gym because he was stopped by the police so many times for running.

This is just horrific. 🤬

I'm sorry things aren't improving. My dsis is married to a man of Indian heritage, and when they were house hunting she had to go alone, because they saw him and refused to enter negotiations, apparently afraid he would haggle on exchange day. These are people who wouldn't consider themselves racist.

Sadly I can attest that the last minute trying to renegotiate is a cultural thing
When we sold our last house we had an offer from an Asian guy our agent who was also Asian told us that they will try to knock us at the last minute but we should stay firm and say we will put the house back on the market
That is exactly what happened

Happylife32 · 20/10/2026 11:10

If you are white then you don't notice the racism that is all around us. It's only when you are in the company with someone non white that you realize just how prevalent it really is.

SparkleHorse82 · 20/10/2026 11:19

How depressing. OP, you have to call it out at every point. Every time you hear it or see it, label it. Being too shy to confront racism as it happens perpetuates it.

Loads of people do this when buying a house - white, black, Asian, whatever. The only thing that is actually different is if it happens to be an Asian person pulling this trick, then someone will always comment on it and makes it about their race. When I white guy does it, everyone forgets and moves on.

Gettingbysomehow · 20/10/2026 11:28

My stepfather is Indian he's been around since I was two. He's highly intelligent and after rejection after rejection in the UK he eventually had to go abroad for the CEO job he wanted. So my family were abroad all my adult life. They are back now to retire but both my (half) siblings work abroad now because of the rascism they experienced here. Its really split our family. I long to have them home. Why the hell should they be seen as less than human because of their skin colour especially when the abusers are chavs and morons.

its Othello. it’s absolutely what Shakespeare was wanging on about. if you’re white your mistakes are just mistakes and you were probably forced into doing the bad thing. if you’re brown your mistakes are your character. how else is it that according to your average reform voter there’s no problem in how lots of white men are viewing and treating women and girls.

peckishcats · 20/10/2026 15:55

After more than 24 hours since having started this thread, you'd expect the OP to have returned by now, wouldn't you?

stuffedanimalsandchocolate · 20/10/2026 16:45

That's crazy. Do you live in the 1970s?

You should talk to the school, they should come down on racist bullying like a ton of bricks

This is shameful behaviour. Makes me so sad and angry. Who’s to say if your DD was dating a white man he wouldn’t hurt her? Your sister probably wouldn’t even mention it. Very backwards thinking. I’d be having strong words personally and keeping your sister at arms length from now on. No need for this kind of behaviour at all.

I think when you are white it is really disturbing to find out the level of racism still prevelant in society. One of my daughters currently has a non white boyfriend who used to work in the NHS and being called 'p**i' by patients was standard for him, apparantly. I was so shocked, I had no idea about the huge level of ignorance and racism in the general public as I live a life insultated from such views.

Yeqp I worked in the NHS and a Noeth African. But would be called Pa*i all the time. I was born and raised in the UK and have a very English proper accent. But the rhing I was always told, very very often "oh your English is so good".
Racisim is alive and kicking in the UK. The NHS and Police force are festering with it.

One colleauge who when I met her she was the Head Educational Nursing Manager from Trinidad, has a very thick accent told me her horror stories in the NHS. All her colleauges of the same band were flying ahead and she was told outright by many senior members of staff "someone of your colour will never get management". Always out of ear shot of others so his word against hers. She had thick akin so kept going deapite the racisim it took her 3X longer then her white counterparts but she made it up high and now everyone comes to her for help. We were talking about our experinces and she said you can either let them win and they push you out. They want you to give up and leave. Or you stay and accept no one is going to help/save you and you work hard even if it is harder then everyone else even to make a dent. It was a very horrifying awakening for me.

When I was younger I assumed this was an issue of our parents generation. But nope. Nope. It is worse then ever and even more protected.

Same happened to my aunt, we are Jorth African. And a very White family last minute tried to knock price down and say x, y and Z needed to be done... All cosmetic.
So it is VERY universal issue.

Timemouse · 20/10/2026 19:03

Yanbu I never understood how racist our country is until I was in a mixed race relationship for a short time. The level of abuse was insane!

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/10/2026 19:52

It's shocking. Society has gone backwards.

NeedToKnow101 · 21/10/2026 20:25

My partner is black, I’m white. We’re from London. In our 19 years together the only racist comment I have had about our relationship was from a Turkish / Kurdish local shop-owner who saw fit to question me as to why I was dating a black man. My partner doesn’t get racist comments at work or out and about either. He has had slyly racist comments directed at him once from a (non-British) co-worker (agency, not invited back). I’m not sharing this to negate others experiences but to show that there are more positive experiences out there.

Pinadaqx2 · 21/10/2026 20:41

This is very unusual for a 15 year old child today. Most children mix and are around different cultures. Are you li ing some where predominantly white OP? Have you spoke to the head of the school? The kids parents need pulling in.

Sounds very odd.
