If you are under 65 do you know who these people are?

They were significant figures in their day, but now?
Bernard Levin
Katherine Whitehorn
Bernard Braden
Nemone Lethbridge
Jill Tweedie
Robin Day.

{They are in no particular order BTW}

46 & nope none of them, maybe if I Google the names I'll recognise them though but just by name no

MaidOfSteel · 19/10/2026 03:11

I’m late 50s and remember Robin Day. He was a journalist/news presenter. Talked about politics.

ThatBreezyKoala · 19/10/2026 04:11

Yes why wouldn't I?

SparkleHorse82 · 19/10/2026 04:25

Only Katherine Whitehorn and that’s because of my job and because she was working very late in life (I’m 44)

Why do people start threads and then refuse to engage with their own thread ? Confused

There's an interesting thread in site stuff about engagement farming, maybe @CorporalJohn is doing that for some reason

Witknit · 19/10/2026 06:59

4 of them...but im not far short of 65!

loriat · 19/10/2026 10:03

I’ve heard of 4 of them, but I’m not much under 65!

PrettyLittleRose · 19/10/2026 10:10

OP never came back. I'm unwatching this thread and hiding it now. Utterly pointless as we all have no idea why the OP asked. 2 days since the opening post - and then nothing. Unwatching and hiding it now....

gingangirly · 19/10/2026 10:11

I’m over 65 and have heard of 2, vaguely. When was ‘their day’?

Imaginary86 · 19/10/2026 16:26

no idea who any of them are

Jill Tweedie’s Letters from a Faint-Hearted Feminist is still very funny and worth reading.

Thank you for mentioning that! Plus the sequel "More from Martha - further letters from a FHF" Brilliantly funny and as you say well worth reading!

Thank you for your replies. Most interesting.

First, why the question? Well I bought a book in a second hand bookshop last week and the publisher's blurb on the jacket made a great deal of fuss about it having an introduction by Bernard Levin. The guy on the counter asked "Who?" and I was the only person in the shop who had heard of him.

So, I asked the question and threw in a few more names at random.

As for who they are/were (done from memory BTW):
Bernard Levin. Times journalist and columnist. A bit like Marmite you either liked him or hated him.
Katherine Whitehorn, Journalist and columnist and author of a book on bedsit cooking.
Bernard Braden. BBC TV presenter. from Canada. Said to be the only Canadian everyone in the UK could name. Presented "The Braden Beat" a "That's Life" prototype. Esther Rantzen was his assistant when she started out on TV.
Nemone Lethbridge. Barrister and civil liberties lawyer. The only one still alive, I believe.
Jill Tweedie. Feminist, journalist and author of 2 very funny books "Letters from a Faint Hearted Feminist" and "More from Martha - Further Letters from a Faint Hearted Feminist"
Robin Day. Barrister, TV interviewer and presenter of "Panorama" and "Question Time" Famous for his bow ties and a bit full of himself, even by the standards of the Bar.

I am 31 and know none of those people

Sueandthegoldfish · 19/10/2026 16:53

The was a programme (series?) recently about Nemone Lethbridge. She has had a fascinating life; one of England’s first female barristers, she met her husband after he’d been sentenced to death. His sentence was commuted and they married in secret in Ireland. When the marriage became public knowledge she was thrown out of chambers.
She became a writer and was only allowed to practice law again after they were divorced.

Sorry, but 48 hours for a response strikes me as perfectly reasonable.

Agreed!

BarbaraUsher · 19/10/2026 19:33

Nemone Lethbridge was on Desert Island Discs not that long ago. I confess I hadn’t heard of her before then but she was fascinating.
I knew all the others but couldn’t remember why I knew the name Jill Tweedie.

FFSItsTooHot · 21/10/2026 16:57

I'm 63 and I know who Robin Day is (Question Time host) , and I've heard of Katherine Whitehorn (journalist ) and Jill Tweedie (broadcaster and writer). I have vaguely heard of Bernard Levin, but not Nemone Lethbridge or or Bernard Braden.

lilkitten · 23/10/2026 16:36

I'm 48, the only name I've heard of is Robin Day. I thought he was a politician, but see now that he wasn't so I guess that one doesn't count either.

hattie43 · 23/10/2026 16:54

I’ve heard of robin day
