Yep. Seen them in London

Why not just call it what it is rather than a specific make? I don't call a computer a Dell. It's some sort of self driving car apparently.

Because its more like saying you got in an uber. Or you have a hoover, or a post it. It’s a thing that is technically one thing but becomes more colloquially known by its brand name.

That being said, this thread would not make much sense if OP said - do you know what a driverless car is without looking it up 😂😂😂

follygirl · 17/10/2026 21:50

Yes

EconomyClassRockstar · 17/10/2026 21:52

I know because I'm not UK based and have used them. I hate them. DH loves them. He orders them and I spend the entire trip praying that we're not going to die. Which is kind of ironic as I've lost count of the amount of Ubers I've got into that have the vague smell of weed in so, in reality, are probably much more dangerous.

EconomyClassRockstar · 17/10/2026 21:54

They're also completely frustrating when they don't "get" what is happening in the road. One time, a massive truck had parked in the central reservation right next to the street we were trying to move out of and it didn't know what to do at all. It just kept going backwards and forwards.

Aperolspritzandacatcuddle · 17/10/2026 22:00

Yes, used them on a recent holiday. Big fan.

newroundhere · 17/10/2026 22:01

Yes - I saw one in London on Thursday. And I've been in one in San Francisco

newroundhere · 17/10/2026 22:02

BertieBotts · 17/10/2026 20:03

Yes. It's like a self-driving uber.

I think I also heard about them on the Hannah Fry programme.

Was that about the one that hit a woman? I think that was an autonomous Uber rather than a Waymo.

Threeatatime · 17/10/2026 22:05

No idea.

Hibiscus27 · 17/10/2026 22:08

Ohhhhhhhh…! I’ve seen them loads around here recently and thought they were doing some road mapping thing. I did wonder why they were around so much.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/10/2026 22:10

Yes. Seen loads in America. Read about them here.

RaraRachael · 17/10/2026 22:15

No. Never heard of it

Well possibly it was something else... I remember watching 2 programmes fairly close to each other and both featured one of the similar things.

I think it might have been the segment about activists who go around sticking tape over the cameras to disable the cars - was that in the Hannah Fry programme?

DriveboyDogboy · 17/10/2026 22:41

Yes

Oh yes, those were waymos I think, you're right!

ImOnlyMakingPlansForNigel · 17/10/2026 22:51

I’ve been in lots of them in the US - incredible! I’m a big fan

BlackeyedSusan · 17/10/2026 22:56

No.

Hopefulmama26 · 17/10/2026 22:59

Yes I live near the testing ground and see them on the local roads. They’re scary. One cut me up at a roundabout and I could do nothing about it.

Ligesani · 17/10/2026 23:00

No, no idea, I can't even guess

DoubleShotEspresso · 17/10/2026 23:10

Unfortunately yes. We have lots locally

malware · 17/10/2026 23:12

Yes. In London you see them on the road. They seem to have drivers but are quite distinctive.

BotoxOrPuffins · 17/10/2026 23:13

Yes, saw lots on test drives this year. I live in London.

TallagallaPenguin · 17/10/2026 23:38

No.

Whatshitnow · 17/10/2026 16:29

Is it a payment method?

That's venmo.

Seziah · 18/10/2026 18:14

No, I thought it was a map app but I think that’s Waze
Closest I’ve come to seeing anything self-driving is the cleaning robots in Morrisons
