Yep, I'm on Reddit a lot and see them mentioned on there quite a bit

Theworldismybuffet · 17/10/2026 18:00

Yes. Because I've seen them in London a few times this year. Thought they were the Google car at first.
I would not use one.

A 2024 study published in Nature found that while autonomous vehicles had fewer accidents overall in certain conditions, they were involved in crashes at 5.25 times the rate of human drivers during dawn and dusk lighting, and nearly twice the rate when making turns. The technology excels at highway cruising and struggles with the messy, ambiguous situations that make up much of real-world driving.

That'll go down a storm on the M25 then.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 17/10/2026 18:12

Nope.

A car hire app? My son was in LA earlier this year

Pumpkintopf · 17/10/2026 18:16

Yes. Used one in San Francisco.

Mummydoctor · 17/10/2026 18:31

Yes. We used them when on holiday in the states this summer.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/10/2026 18:33

Whatshitnow · 17/10/2026 16:29

Is it a payment method?

That's what I thought as well or a way of transferring money, but apparently not.

Crumpelstiltskin · 17/10/2026 18:41

Yes. DC uses them regularly when working in LA.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/10/2026 19:09

Yes and I won’t use one ever. Do people genuinely want to have everyone lose their jobs?

Added to which I just spent a month in a part of the world with few tourists and many cabs. I found restaurants, activities, culture, explanations, weird stories, and laughs. A bloody robot won’t tell be the weird history of the weird building I’m passing, with the local flavour. Folklore isn’t always what’s on the internet. And it doesn’t have a grandma that remembers the Soviet era propaganda about it.

Talk to people. Before we’re all replaced!

I've just remembered, thats a Venmo!
Getting my Mo's mixed up. 🙄

Ronaldos · 17/10/2026 19:17

No

imnotsickbutimnotwell · 17/10/2026 20:02

Yes but only because I was driving behind one in London a few weeks ago and I looked up what it was called.

BertieBotts · 17/10/2026 20:03

Yes. It's like a self-driving uber.

I think I also heard about them on the Hannah Fry programme.

Mushroomstomatoes · 17/10/2026 20:04

Yes, I travelled in one on holiday. Exciting and actually considerably cheap.

Mushroomstomatoes · 17/10/2026 20:07

EggBleater · 17/10/2026 17:44

Yes because I was driving behind one and it was swerving all over the place between parked cars, indicated right, then turned left.😡

Don’t believe this at all, they are considerably safe. When I travelled in one they are often hesitant to move off at lights as it maps people around it and won’t go if there is any risk of them going near the car. They signal before any manoeuvre.

mydogisfat · 17/10/2026 20:17

Yes we used them in San Francisco

mydogisfat · 17/10/2026 20:18

They were jaguars

chirrupybird · 17/10/2026 20:24

Why not just call it what it is rather than a specific make? I don't call a computer a Dell. It's some sort of self driving car apparently.

Boopear · 17/10/2026 20:25

Yes. Been in one. It tried to make us get out in the middle of a dual carriageway 😨. Interestingly none of my California based colleagues use them at all (this may or may not be related to the propensity for random trip endings…)

eurochick · 17/10/2026 20:42

Yes. I saw my first one in the wild in London recently. It was heading down a road towards absolute chaos. A banksman, lorries reversing into a building site, cars on the wrong side of the road because of the lorries, cyclists and pedestrians. I wanted to stick around to see how it coped but I was late for a meeting.

IzzyLeng · 17/10/2026 20:45

Yes because I e seen tiktok compilation videos of them doing daft stuff. One poor passenger got out but all her bags were still in and it drove off before she could get them out the back or possibly the boot.

waymos swerving about, driving into floods, onto train tracks. They definitely mess up sometimes.

Anarchy99 · 17/10/2026 20:59

I looked it up - not everyone is based in London

TheDogsMother · 17/10/2026 21:22

Yes
