Would you know what a waymo was without looking it up?

Yes

Vermin · 17/10/2026 16:54

Yes been in one in LA and they’re all over Shoreditch. They also sponsored SXSW London.

Not a clue.

My word association mind took me to "Flymo" so in my head it's perhaps an automatic lawnmower.

FenceMafia · 17/10/2026 16:55

A Geordie version of FOMO?

If it went wrong (when it goes wrong), it could well be!

Driverless cars. That's not a recipe for disaster.. at all..

They’re where I live now and are significantly safer than the people here who drive. Sounds weird, but they don’t drive aggressively, run red lights, drive badly etc. my elderly parents take them every time when visiting vs an uber, and they were huge skeptics.

FallingfortheUnderdog · 17/10/2026 17:20

Yes

Davros · 17/10/2026 17:25

I’ve only ever seen one. I’m in London Zone 2 and regularly go into Town and often west/southwest

MerryAquaKoala · 17/10/2026 17:25

A 2024 study published in Nature found that while autonomous vehicles had fewer accidents overall in certain conditions, they were involved in crashes at 5.25 times the rate of human drivers during dawn and dusk lighting, and nearly twice the rate when making turns. The technology excels at highway cruising and struggles with the messy, ambiguous situations that make up much of real-world driving.

ThePineappleSeahorse · 17/10/2026 17:26

Yes. I’ve read about them in the news many times.

PDAblues · 17/10/2026 17:27

No

Ezzee · 17/10/2026 17:33

Yes, we saw loads in Orlando.

Fledgedup · 17/10/2026 17:34

No

Hedgesgalore · 17/10/2026 17:39

Yes, went in one in San Francisco last year. Dh wanted to try one out as there were loads of them and they were driverless unlike the ones I've seen in London which still have a driver.

It was VERY weird, I kinda got used to it by the end of the trip. It was absolutely spotlessly clean inside. It was more expensive than an uber.

Where2SleepWithoutNoise · 17/10/2026 17:40

Yes

EggBleater · 17/10/2026 17:44

Yes because I was driving behind one and it was swerving all over the place between parked cars, indicated right, then turned left.😡

SerendipityJane · 17/10/2026 17:45

Yes.

But it;s my job to know what's happening ....

RichPetuniaAgain · 17/10/2026 17:46

Don't have a clue.

Seems pretty obvious to me they would be overall better and safer than humans!

People mentally compare them to a perfect human driver, but in reality far too many human drivers are very far from perfect and they are driving on our roads as well.

I think we'll get some headline horror crashes that make the doomsayers proclaim "I told you so!" but actually the number of crashes will go way down. And even the horror crashes probably will only be reported widely because they are robot drivers. Human driver crashes are hardly reported outside local news at all these days unless they are multi-car, criminal chases or block a motorway for hours.

MagnoliaParks · 17/10/2026 17:53

Yes, have been in one and went out of our way to do so in America.

MyEasterBonnet · 17/10/2026 17:54

Yeah; I went to Vegas recently and tried to download both the Waymo and Zoox app, but it wouldn’t let me as my Apple account it UK based. I was wanting to give them a try.

Do you remember if they were Teslas? Teslas rely on cameras only, no additional radar-like sensors. I have a Tesla and at night or dusk away from streetlights it complains constantly its cameras are covered (they aren't). Great EV but not sure I'd want a Tesla as the base for a self driving car.

DancingNotDrowning · 17/10/2026 17:56

Yes. Seen them in San Francisco over the last couple of years. Seem to be springing up in London in recent months.
