No it really isnt in the public interest

Being interesting to the public, does not equal, being in the public interest.

No - it’s in the public interest to be able to tell one’s own story. Hence Ryan shouldn’t have been allowed to unilaterally silence them.

Ryan Giggs wasn't found guilty of anything. His professional life has been ruined, he'll never work again and he would like to.

He was trying to keep the fact that he had had an affair with his brother's wife a secret. Whilst immoral this wasn't really in the public interest for us to know.

It’s always a shame when the facts get in the way of a good argument!

Ryan Giggs announced his retirement as a player in October 2010. His testimonial was in 2011 before the superinjunction was granted. That wasn’t granted until later in 2011. He then went on to have a long and fairly typical post player career right up until he was arrested for assault in 2020. I suspect you are right he hasn’t worked much since then but the media is fully entitled to report criminal trials whatever your views on sexual indiscretions.

Being interesting to the public, does not equal, being in the public interest.

Not even if it enables other victims to end their silence?

But that isn't what I said.

It is the public interest that people are able to speak about what happens to them.

SpanishFly · 01/11/2026 19:02

No, but Ryan Giggs was named as a result of how ridiculous it was that everyone knew who it was, and that the Herald already printed the story!

It was to show how ridiculous superinjunctions are.

It was also an example of the Streisand Effect

I mean it just isnt at all!!

Something happening to you may well involve the private business of someone else, and that is their private business.

How do you feel about the leaked recordings of Walliams' remarks about the public auditioning for BGT?

Harpercollins, who I think were DW’s publishers, is owned by Newscorp which is owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Which book publisher is owned by The Guardian?

Sorry. I was thinking about the article. 🤦‍♀️

Edited

He’s also been the director of football, at Salford City for the last couple of years, so I have no idea where the ‘never worked again’ sob story came from.
People dislike him because not many people can imagine doing that to their own brother, it was abhorrent.

Yes, the defenders are quite quiet about that. Also, as weird as he is he is not the baby reindeer guy.

On what authority do you know? Who is Darrian?

The injunction was about his affair with Imogen Thomas, and had he not wanted to keep that silent, his brother's wife might not have revealed the affair they were having.

BrandiedAromatics · Yesterday 10:30

Also, worth pointing out that these injunctions only apply in England and Wales - as @SpanishFly has alluded to by mentioning the (Scottish) Sunday Herald.

Yes, you are right I forgot that. My point was that it really wasn't in the public interest for it to be published in a newspaper. It was just gossip which a lot of newspaper celeb articles are. Yes, his morals were deplorable but it was only of interest because he was Ryan Giggs.

Just like the news article many years ago about David Walliams in the back room of a lap dancing club having a private dance. If it was my mate Bernard the paper wouldn't have been interested and the bouncer wouldn't have sold the CCTV images to the News of The World. Strange how that story has totally disappeared on line.

He did. Very long term too, years. He also had an affair with Imogen Thomas which the papers found out about. He wanted the injunction to stop that being printed because he didn't want his wife or sister in law to find out. The injunction failed because an MP used parliamentary privilege to reveal his name.

Of course it also meant that the children of these people had their parents love lives splashed all over the papers which must have been hideous for them.

cupfinalchaos · Yesterday 11:48

Understood thank you for clarifying.

The Presidents Club.

They just discussed the injunction on R4 news with a lawyer on this. The person is seeking a lifetime anonymity order on the basis of his psychological harm that he would face of this went public and ongoing risk of him ending his life. Presenter did actually suggest that maybe the person could seek psychiatric care to deal with his distress. Presumably there is a point where he will recover from his acute distress and then the injection would then be lifted. But this is not what he is seeking.

The only other people who have been granted lifetime anonymity to prevent them being Identified are said to be 2 girls convicted of murder as children

I didn't realise Walliams had such a habit of pulling other men's trousers down on stage Confused I've seen the Mark Ronson clip, but it turns out he's done it loads!

The routine begins with Walliams asking a volunteer to come up onto the stage and getting them to confirm their age.

When one answers 16, the controversial comedian says, 'Bingo', before adding: 'You're a big boy for 16 aren't you – that's what I'll tell the judge.'

He then kisses the boy on the lips before playing his game of 'hide the sausage', which involves him lunging for their trousers, dry humping them and leaving them with exposed buttocks and grappling to keep their genitals covered.

David Walliams humiliates young men by pulling down pants on stage

The clip is from a BBC documentary featuring Little Britain in Australia in 2007. Walliams, now 48, plays a predatory gay ex-kids' TV entertainer called Des Kaye, who invites young men onto the stage
