Blending families is shit for the kids and parents who disagree are in denial because they feel guilty.

Tattoo sleeves on women look vulgar and grubby.

People who come in to the country illegally should be arrested and deported.

People who take weight loss jabs instead of eating right and exercising are lazy and have no willpower.

Heavily agree with you about blended families. Should never be done - it's just selfish and it almost never works. So so selfish.

Ewwww you must be joking. I was thinking something more uplifting like 'Diversia' or 'Hopeland' but it could be a national competition to come up with the best name.

I was joking.

and yet here you are

chat forums were common pre-2000 and even before the Internet became mainstream - you can trace forums back to its original, super-geeky form usenet

When I think of the birth of antisocial media, its either youtube, but more likely the virus that Zuckerberg spawned a few years later, Twitter quickly followed on its heels and then smart phones became the delivery vehicle

Star Trek Deep Space Nine is the best of all the Star Trek series. Also highly relevant to watch today.

British/Irish/American/French/Australian/New Zealand/etc Sign Language should be required courses in school curriculum like English is.

agree with 1. I'd agree with one sign language being taught. How many are the same?

I know. I was there. But like it or not, MN is defined as social media.

ASL evolved from French SL and AUSLAN/NZ SL are kind of similar but I don't know if Irish and British are related, or British and AUSLAN.
Fun fact: South African SL is related to German (or possibly Austrian/Swiss) I believe, as it was taught by some nuns who started a school for the deaf.
Excuse me, I need to go and look up sign language relatedness rather than go home and cook tea.

Haven’t read thread so I’m sure it’s cropped up but fat kids…there are very few excuses.

shuggles · 13/10/2026 17:43

@Notgrowing Skinny jabs will cause problems in the end.

There's an argument that their use should become more common and widespread, as the risk of any side effects would be massively outweighed by the very real and very serious side effects of obesity.

Though I would agree that they should not be seen as a permanent solution. I hope that over the coming decades, the UK can do more to fix its broken food supply. I would like to see all western countries become more like Japan, where it's actually difficult to be fat because even their convenience foods tend to be healthy.

Fat lips indeed look silly, but I would get in trouble if I said that in real life.

  • There are only two genders. Gender change should be illegal to kids/teenagers similar to alcohol, driving, etc
  • Feminism should be about giving women equal opportunities, not pretending men and women are identical or that traditional masculinity and femininity are somehow a bad thing.
  • Disagree with Diversity quotas. Opportunities should be earned, not handed out based on race or gender.
  • Illegal drugs should stay illegal. Legalisation isn't the answer.

Good question! There are over 300 distinct signed languages today. There is no such thing as universal sign language. Signed language evolve naturally just like spoken languages do. They also have their own accents and regional varieties within the same language just like spoken languages do. They also have their own distinct family language trees.

For example American sign language is more closely related linguistically to French sign language than British sign language. While British sign language is more closely related to Auslan or NZ sign language. It doesn't matter that the predominate spoken language is the same English.

OK! The word from Wikipedia is:
French SL -> American and Irish, as well as a shed load of others, mainly in Europe/N. Africa.
Old British SL -> AUSLAN and, separately it seems, NZSL, and also S. African SL but the latter had a lot of influence by Irish nuns (sorry, nuns, I thought you were German-speaking).

Social media - especially Twitter - was a wonderful place 20 years ago. I honestly believe it was Brexit / Trump that has given people the bravery to be utter cretins and say what they like.

And the last 24 hours has shown us quite how much if the evil on social media is actually coming from the Russian bots.

And lazy.

You're both confusing gentle parenting with permissive parenting. Have you actually read what both approaches are or do you see a shitty permissive parent who's a doormat to their child and think "yep, gentle parenting".

Gentle parenting is actually the least lazy approach as you need to constantly control your own emotions and anger while trying to react in a way that will bring the best results in terms of improving the child's future behaviour without traumatising them. Yelling at your kids is the easiest thing to do

The whole "the moon landing was fake" thing......I never give it much thought, always just assumed that it was real. But thinking about the political scene at the time, the US was desperate to beat the USSR in the space race, how bent their government was in places, how important it was from a morale pov for the US population and how it placed the US in the world hierarchy, lets just say I wouldnt be massively surprised if it ever came out that it was faked.

I just wonder why they've never managed to do it again.

50 something years later and nothing. And the photos were so clear, so with all these jumped up billionaires, all the money behind it and all the facilities why haven't they managed to do it again since?

I don't actually see any differences between permissive and gentle parenting in practice. I don't see any effective, universal means within gentle parenting to prevent children from doing things they aren't supposed to be doing. You might get lucky and explaining feelings in long sentences might be comprehensible to your child or they might just be a gentle soul who wouldn't take a toy away from another child or wallop their brother, but you might not and as I say, explaining feelings in long sentences is not an effective measure for most children to prevent walloping of said brother.

Authoritative parenting is the type that most studies show is most effective and it includes pretty straightforward and firmly enforced boundaries. Not just "you aren't allowed to hurt people" but consequences and preventive measures to reduce hurting.
Authoritative parenting doesn't necessarily include raising your voice (though it doesn't automatically exclude it either, especially if used sparingly so children can see you are serious).
It also has no requirement to explain your feelings or try to get children to notice or explain their own.
It still works.

Why would anybody want to do it again? It was only done as willy waving exercise for the US to prove its cock was much bigger than Russia's.

There's nothing to be gained.

at best, social media was only ever going to be a poor facsimile of connection with others and more a platform for comparison, upvotes/approval and a fermenter of FOMO

now its at least a weapon of mass disinformation to the point that many people don't know what objective truth or fact is anymore... popularity-driven opinion carries more weight

that's before you consider SM as another avenue for criminality of all types
