Would you buy a house that has two showers and no bath?

I'd like to get rid of our bath and install a shower cubicle which would free up some much needed storage space in our small family bathroom.

No one in our household has had a bath in years and I feel a shower cubicle would work better for us (me and two adult DC).

The master bedroom already has a small en-suite shower room which DH uses.

But I'm concerned no bath could put people off buying when we sell up in a few years time (5+ years).

Would you be happy buying a house with no bath?

We will need to give it some thought. Dh is eager to rip the bath out and put in a nice shower unit but I have been having some doubts, our house would be perfect for a young family, the village we live in has a great primary school and more and more younger couples and young families are moving in so I wouldn't want to put any off if and when we do sell (I would happily sell up now if I had my way!).

There is definitely no room for a shower cubicle and bath without major work. I would happily buy a house with only showers but then we are in our 50's with young adult kids. I did use the bath every day when they were little so I can understand that many still like, and need to use a bath.

As other posters have said, if there’s space to install a bath (which there definitely is if you’re removing one), it’s not a major job to reinstate one - and given all the other positives you’ve listed, I can’t imagine the lack of a bath would deter a keen buyer.

Unless you’re intending to sell in the next few years, you should always tailor your home to what suits you and how you like to live. There’s no point in living every day for years with something much less convenient on the basis that at some random point in the future someone else may possibly prefer a different arrangement! If you want a shower, put one in.

I'm actually surprised so many people still have baths tbh, I thought with all the pushing for us to save on water consumption more people would be opting for quicker showers instead of full baths, so this post has been a bit of an eye opener.

If it’s likely 5+ years, put the shower in and don’t think more about it!

BirdLandedonmyHead · Yesterday 13:39

What put us off keeping the bath was seeing the aftermath of an not even elderly parent slipping in one. They are extremely hard to get someone with a broken leg out of.

We have a bath (family of 6) and maybe one person might use it about once a year.

ie id happily live without

You like to float in a dead skin soup as part of getting clean?

Stop with the hyperbole. You are being ridiculous.

I was meeting like with like 🙂

the idea that you have to have a bath to get clean was rather funny I thought

In five years, if the market requires it, you can install a bath. Live your life!

This! 5 years is a long time that people are weird about keeping a bath. Do what works for you now. You can change in the future if needed to sell or people can put one in if they like the place. Bathrooms are replaceable. Get rid of the bath!
saying as someone with a toddler using bath.

We all managed in the 1960s when very few houses had showers.

I tend to shower 99% of the time, but sometimes I like a nice long wallow in the bath. I am never very dirty when I have a bath as I don't work down a mine.

I guess people who dislike the idea of a bath never go swimming then?

brownbootsandhats · Yesterday 14:06

The PP said that you could only get clean in a bath
that was clearly stupid

hence my comment about skin soup which you took out of its context

camomile tea is nice

I never have a bath and much prefer a shower but I still wouldn't buy a house without a bath as I'd be thinking of it putting people off when it comes to resale.

I love swimming but hate baths.

People get out of the swimming pool.... straight into a shower to wash off chemicals etc!

I have EDS and potentially POTs, baths leave me feeling unwell. I also just don't enjoy soaking in my own juices tbh.

Me too! And this is exactly the reason why I need a bath and not a shower. I pass out in the shower and I need baths for the pain.

So for that reason I would never consider a house without a bath and even if it was the perfect house I couldn’t go for it. I wouldn’t even read the rest of the house listing once I realised there was no bath. My husband wouldn’t be fussed personally.

Regardless of my condition I wouldn’t buy a house without a bath if I had small children though. If it suits your family I would weigh up how much it would be to get it put back when you sell.

gravitarse · Yesterday 14:28

mate of mine is a shower fanatic but just occasionally yearns for a bath in her 2 shower house,

When you are ill or super cold for eg

OffTheMap · Yesterday 14:39

I would prefer not to have a bath.

But for 5 years of living how you like to live, surely people can see that it is a simple job to reinstate a bath if the rest of the house suits.

I wouldn’t compromise your own preferences for second guessing the preferences of an unknown future buyer.

museumum · Yesterday 14:42

My kids mainly had baths until they were about 8yrs old. But if a house had a bathroom over 5 years old and room for a bath I would not be put off unless I was moving with a young baby (as we did) and needed it ready to go.

I much prefer a really good shower. This is the obvious answer! Put a bath back in if it turns out to be a dealbreaker when marketing your house.

Wickedwhiskers · Yesterday 14:46

Absolutely we'd want a bath. Adult neurodiverse "child" who has sensory issues in a shower and I while I use a shower I also like a nice.soak in a tub too.

I wont even hire a holiday cottage without a bath

Bobbyelvis4ever · Yesterday 14:59

Bought a house with 2 showers and no bath when DS1 was 2. DS2 managed perfectly as a baby, either in the baby bath or being held in the shower.

No-one misses it.

If a house was absolutely for me, having to put a bath in wouldn’t be a game changer.

SabrinaBricklayer · Yesterday 15:02

I mostly have showers but sometimes, especially in the winter, I like to have a bath and read a book in it. I think I’m pretty clean so I don’t see it as soaking in my own filth. 😁

I personally couldn't care less about a bath, but then I don't have children.

Cousins abroad had a bath which was the same foot print of the actual shower. It was about 30-40cm deep and used as a shower 90% if the time, but when filled, could fit 2-3 small children sitting in it. I've never seen the exact same in the UK, but a small bath might be an option with the usual shower screens around it, IF you want to keep some element of a bath

I need a bath. They are my main form of self care. Without one my mental health suffers.
