Favourite poorly food

Currently full of some kind of cold/flu/covid virus. When I can taste, favourite poorly food = cream of tomato soup with bread & loads of butter to dip, or toast/crumpets with butter & marmite. Jelly babies or soft fruit jellies and orange Lucozade for sugar.

How about you?

Mash potato sandwich- I have zero shame, it’s utterly delicious

Sesame2011 · 13/10/2026 09:09

Heinz tomato soup with some pasta added in.
White toast and lurpak
Chicken noodle soup that comes in a packet
Cadbury dairy milk
Crackers and cheese

MintTwirl · 13/10/2026 09:11

Similar to you, Heinz cream of chicken soup with lots of cheap white bread and butter.

There’s something about mashed potato. I crave mash and gravy or shepherd’s pie.

Hope you get better soon OP.

White bread, with boiled milk poured over it, and sugar spread over it. My gran used to have it - and give it to me - when she/I was unwell.

Sugar and bread provide a fast source of accessible calories and glucose, which is particularly useful during illness or when trying to build up energy.

I still have it now. Old habits die hard. Grin

Be prepared for a few posters to look down their nose at you for using the word 'poorly' @Ljcrow I think it's fine by the way, but some people get a bit funny about it. (Suggesting only small children say it.) My aunt who is 87 says it though, so there ya go! Grin

Get well soon!

Oh really? God, it's a minefield 😆 I've possibly picked up a few childish turns of phrase from working with young kids for a long time. 🤷‍♀️

Instant ramen with a good blob or 4 of crispy chilli oil.

Tomato soup with a thickly buttered hunk of crusty baguette and chunks of cheese to melt into the soup.

I’m also a fan of a mashed potato sandwich, with HP sauce.
See also, leftover cottage pie sandwich or leftover chilli on toast.

I have never heard of a mashed potato sandwich. I'll be honest, it sounds grim but maybe I'll give it a try...
I do fancy a cheese toastie now.

Cheese toasties.
Well that'll be lunch sorted. I've got mango chutney.

AlwaysExtraHot · 13/10/2026 09:46

Chicken soup (the fresh kind in a tub, not canned) and I squeeze in some lemon. Crusty white bread.

As a kid I used to have tinned oxtail soup and either bread and marge (white sliced, obviously) or cheese sandwiches, also on white sliced). I keep thinking that one of these days when I'm ill I must try it again.

I also love a cup of ginger and lemon/orange tea, with added manuka honey. For some reason it feels more healthful if I leave the teaspoon in. Grin

Tuna fish sandwich

Vegetable dhal with turmeric and lots of garlic! Easy to digest, full of nutrients, comforting and warming and medicinal too! It's what I always make for my boys when they're poorly! You can use any veg you've got kicking about in the fridge or just chuck in some frozen veg. You can serve it up with bread and butter to dunk or any kind of flatbread, wraps or garlic bread.

Sounds lovely but far too much effort 😆 Heating something in the microwave or putting something in the toaster is as far as I'm prepared to go!
