Does anyone else remember chanting this as kids? It was like a song that always started with 'when susie was a baby' and continue to when she was dead, and when she was a skeleton , a ghost etc.

Not sure why but it came into my head the other day. Do children still sing it?

I don’t remember it either. I remember a skipping one that went something like this…

Not last night, but the night before, 24 coppers came knocking on my door

And another one…

my boyfriend gave me and apple, my boyfriend gave me a pear. Then he gave me a kiss on the lips and threw me down the stairs!

Oh and we used to play ‘Elastics’ I think this actually called French skipping and we had to jump over the elastic the was held by 2 people’s legs, either at ‘ankles’ ‘kneesies’ or ‘thighsies’. One of the rhymes for that was ‘England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Inside, Outside, Inside, Out’

This was London late eighties/early nineties.

I don't recognise most of those lyrics. A baby I think was 'Goo ga, goo goo ga'. And I'm pretty sure Granny went 'Knit, knit, knit knit knit'.

I can't remember the rest but I think we ended with when she was dead and just all shut up and stopped immediately.

It was a clapping rhyme. You stood opposite another girl and clapped hands with them. (Early 1970s)

Yes I'm off the Goo ga and knit knit tribe.

Norfolk, sang it in the late 80s/early 90s

Nonononomaybe · 12/10/2026 22:12

My kids are 6 and 9 and learned this at school - I had never heard of it!

I did know ‘on top of spaghetti’ from brownies though!

Clawdy · 12/10/2026 22:13

I remember it as “ left my knickers in Batman’s car”!

AnonyMumAuDHD · 12/10/2026 22:13

Hatty65 · 12/10/2026 18:02

I remember it. I don't think kids now sing it. 'When Susie was a teenager, a teenager Susie was... she said-a 'Ooh ah, I lost my bra. I left my knickers in my boyfriend's car'.

That's the bit that has obviously stuck with me!

That’s the saucy bit I remember. Use to sing it while doing that while doing the paired clapping game, with mime/actions added on each round? The dinner ladies on playground duty used to go spare.

There was another one involving susie which has been driving me up the wall since you started this thread. This was the one we did more often

Yes! I've also been singing this since reading the thread. This one was brilliant. I wonder who originally came up with it!

Yes!! I remember this from the 70s/80s. How sad that it has been lost to time...

Our version (from across the pond) had a 'Miss Lucy' rather than Susie. The only verse I remember:

Miss Lucy had a baby
She called him Tiny Tim
She put him in the bathtub
To see if he could swim
He drank up all the water
He ate up all the soap
He tried to eat the bathtub
But it wouldn't go down his throat.

I sing something similar in nursery but it ends

he are up all the soap
hes lying in the bath with a bubble in his throat
bubble Bubble BUBBLE POP!!

It rolled off the table
and on to he floor
my poor little meatball...I can't remember the rest. 😂
I remember the ryhme in the OP and would have heard it in about the 70's, early 80's.
Does anyone remember
My mama told me
if I was goodie
that she would buy me
a rubber dolly
I kissed a soldier
my sister told her,
now she won't buy me
a rubber dolly

Of course as kids we changed it to 'rbber johnny' not knowing what one was or what you used it for! lol

Edited

And then my poor meatball rolled under the door
it rolled in the garden and under a bush
and now my poor meatball is covered in mush

ithinkthereforeyouarewrong · 12/10/2026 22:29

The version I remember is
Baby - Waa Waa Waa Waa Was
Child- Miss Miss I can do this I got my knickers in a awful twist
teen- ooh ahh I lost my bra I left my knickers in my boyfriend car
mum- brush your teeth comb your hair Don’t forget your underwear
gran - knit Knit you silly little twit
dead - silent
skeleton- rattle rattle rattle rattle rattle
ghost - BOO!!

  • 👶 The Baby: "When Susie was a baby, a baby Susie was, and she went: Cry, baby, cry baby, wah, wah, wah!"
  • 🎒 The Schoolgirl: "When Susie was a schoolgirl... she went: Miss, Miss, I cannot do this, I lost my pencil in the twist!"
  • 💋 The Teenager: "When Susie was a teenager... she went: Ooh, aah, I lost my bra, I left my knickers in my boyfriend's car!" (or "Kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss!")
  • 🤱 The Mother: "When Susie was a mother... she went: Wash the dishes, do the chores, brush your teeth, and lock the doors!"
  • 👵 The Granny: "When Susie was a granny... she went: Ouch, my back, my aching bones, ooh, aah, ooh!"
  • 🪦 The Corpse / Dead: "When Susie was a dead girl... she went: Deep in the grave, deep in the grave, shh, shh, shh."
  • 💀 The Skeleton: "When Susie was a skeleton... she went: Clickety-clack, clickety-clack, clickety-clickety-clickety-clack!"
  • 👻 The Ghost: "When Susie was a ghost... she went: Boo, boo, boo, boo, boo!"

Our schoolgirl Susie (early 80s) went, “miss, miss, I can’t do this! I’ve got my knickers in an awful twist!”

That and the teenager line were the bits which stuck with me. It’s amazing how entertaining knickers are to small girls!

DSis and I were talking about 'my boyfriend gave me an apple' the other day and wondering how we got away with

'I took him to the sweet shop to buy some bubblegum
And when he wasn't looking, I shoved it up his bum'

At the age of 8 in the school playground BlushGrin

I don’t remember the last two lines of that one. Definitely had the sitting on the back seat drinking Pepsi but I don’t think it ended like that.

MuggyBonehead · 12/10/2026 22:49

my boyfriend gave me and apple, my boyfriend gave me a pear, my boyfriend gave me a kick up the bum, and he threw me down the stairs.

I gave him back his apple, I gave him back his pear. I gave him back his kick up the bum, and I threw him down the stairs.

I threw him over England, I threw him over France. I threw him over a football pitch, and he lost his underpants.

MuggyBonehead · 12/10/2026 22:52

My cousin Billy had a ten-foot willy,
And he showed it to the girl next door.
She thought it was a snake,
And she hit it with a rake,
And now it’s only two foot four

I remember the Belle Stars’ version!

I’m nearly 60 and also remember Susie and the meatball song. Great thread!

I also remember skipping to:

Not last night but the night before
24 robbers came knocking at the door
I ran oooooouuuuuuut
to let them in
and this is what they said to me
Spanish lady turn around
Spanish lady touch the ground
Spanish lady do the high kicks
Spanish lady do the splits

but we would change the last line to
Spanish lady show your knicks.

We were obsessed with knickers in the 70s! Happy days ❤️

BluebellBeth · 12/10/2026 23:00

I've never heard this rhyme. But I do recognise the 'Miss miss, I can't do this, I've got my knickers in a right old twist' from 'The Nativity film.

I went to school in the 80s and we were equally obsessed with knickers.

We three kings of Leicester Square
Selling knickers, 2p a pair,
They're fantastic - no elastic!
Why don't you buy a pair?

Oooo-ooooo....

See that lady down the street
Wearing knickers down to her feet
They're fantastic - no elastic!
Why don't you buy a pair?
