Does anyone else remember chanting this as kids? It was like a song that always started with 'when susie was a baby' and continue to when she was dead, and when she was a skeleton , a ghost etc.

Not sure why but it came into my head the other day. Do children still sing it?

Dh (born 1975) denied all knowledge. He also claims he had never heard 'on top of spaghetti all covered in cheese, I lost my poor meatball when somebody sneezed'. I'm not sure whether to call his mother and demand an explanation or check for wires as he clearly isn't human.

Boys were oblivious to this sort of stuff @DarkForces

They just wrestled with each other in the playground or poked at worms in puddles. Singing, dancing, clapping or leaping in and out of elastic stretched around other girls' legs was beyond them...

CardboardTube · 12/10/2026 20:49

Yes!! I remember this from the 70s/80s. How sad that it has been lost to time...

Our version (from across the pond) had a 'Miss Lucy' rather than Susie. The only verse I remember:

Miss Lucy had a baby
She called him Tiny Tim
She put him in the bathtub
To see if he could swim
He drank up all the water
He ate up all the soap
He tried to eat the bathtub
But it wouldn't go down his throat.

It rolled off the table and onto the floor. And then my poor meatball rolled out of the door.

Waitingfordoggo · 12/10/2026 20:49

I’d completely forgotten this! I remember it as a clapping rhyme in the 80s but I don’t remember poor Susie dying. Maybe we left that bit out.

It rolled down the garden
And under a bush
And then my poor meatball
Was nothing but mush!

I was born in the late 70s and we sang it at primary school in the 80s.

Same OP! I haven’t thought about it in years but I immediately knew what you were referring to from the thread title. The only line I remember is the teenager one but do vaguely remember it carried on with her ending up as a skeleton and a ghost.

TessTickle0 · 12/10/2026 21:11

Yes! I remember this.
Or rather I remember the knickers in a car verse.

we also used to sing one which had this verse
Oh you'll never get to heaven in Fred's car, 'cus fred's car won't get that far!

flowersdiscount · 12/10/2026 18:10

Ohhhh I do remember it! I’d totally forgotten about this!!!

oh, the 90s ❤️

I’m nearly 60, and we were singing about Susie in primary school! 😂

NeedToKnow101 · 12/10/2026 21:20

Hatty65 · 12/10/2026 18:02

I remember it. I don't think kids now sing it. 'When Susie was a teenager, a teenager Susie was... she said-a 'Ooh ah, I lost my bra. I left my knickers in my boyfriend's car'.

That's the bit that has obviously stuck with me!

Snap. This line still pops into my head sometimes. It’s a clapping game isn’t it.

I discovered tonight that none of my Guides know 'on top of spaghetti'. This will be rectified next week !!

SherryWidow · 12/10/2026 21:30

I remember it as: I’ve left my knickers in the vicar’s car.

Moonnstarz · 12/10/2026 21:32

Yes this brings back memories!
For the primary school verse we had 'miss miss I need a p*ss and I don't know where the toilet is'. Surprised no dinner lady heard and told us off for it!

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/10/2026 21:37

There was another one involving susie which has been driving me up the wall since you started this thread. This was the one we did more often

my poor little meatball...I can't remember the rest. 😂
I remember the ryhme in the OP and would have heard it in about the 70's, early 80's.
Does anyone remember
My mama told me
if I was goodie
that she would buy me
a rubber dolly
I kissed a soldier
my sister told her,
now she won't buy me
a rubber dolly

Of course as kids we changed it to 'rbber johnny' not knowing what one was or what you used it for! lol

We’re were singing this in 1974!

seahorsessky · 12/10/2026 21:55

Yes. Once, when drunk, I met a new friend (a new partner of one of the guys in our group) and both started doing it. Yes, very sad, but was very drunk, and just goes to show how widespread it was. Very much doubt it would be acceptable for the words to be used in an infant playground today!

Sirzy · 12/10/2026 18:01

I haven’t heard it for years (and I work in primary schools) but as soon as I read the title I started singing it.

Me too!

soundsys · 12/10/2026 22:00

Yes! My now 7 year old was obsessed with this a few years ago! (I’d never heard it before)

PersonaNonFatta · 12/10/2026 22:01

Yep, child of the 70s here. Also remember the knickers and bra line best!
Granny Susie knitted.
I think Mother Susie did some sort of telling off…. I remember a finger wagging gesture!

PumpkinSpicePie · 12/10/2026 22:04

Yes we sang that at Infant School in the 70s

I remember a comedian on TV saying his daughter sang that song and he asked her why Susie would have left her knickers in the car and the daughter said "Because she went to ballet?"
