It was reinstated. I think MNHQ are keeping an eye on it. Some of the worst posts are still being deleted and they are responding very quickly to reports.

Ahh thank you!
I've never seen one reinstated before.

Has happened a few times! Smile

All that happened - probably - is that it was reported by well over a dozen posters, and it got automatically hidden. MN reviewed it, and decided it was OK to put it back up, but they will be keeping an eye on it, as some people have said some nasty things about the man.

Everything I've read from the others that were there are saying he was alone, no carers. So one does need to wonder if that is indeed the case how cognitively impaired he is, to have presumably got the tickets, got there himself etc.

I read mixed reports initially but I'm now also largely seeing that he was there alone.

I don't understand why people visit zoos in the first place. Animals kept in a fraction of the space they would have in the wild in the wrong climate, not able to interact with any other species or to cover the distances they would in the wild. They are prisons for animals. They are there to be gawked at by the ignorant under the guise of education and conservation. When an animal makes a break for freedom, it is often exterminated. I hope they will go the way of animal circuses and we will look back with shame that they were ever deemed acceptable.

It's a wildlife park, not a zoo. Tigers would probably be extinct without conservation efforts from places such as YWP.

SumptuousPecanNougat · 11/10/2026 17:42

I'm not a big zoo-goer myself, but I don't think they're all as bad as some people make them out to be. They serve a purpose if they're run properly.

Dumb comment.

Obviously they are NOT secure if a man, not in full control of his faculties, was able to get inside without staff being aware or able to stop him!

@OpenScroller The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is not a zoo, the Amur tiger area is 8,000 square meters, the staff could not reasonably be expected to be at the scene in the crucial first couple of minutes of the man getting into the tiger area.
In addition, the viewing area is a raised platform with fencing at least six metres in height and angled at the top to make climbing it extremely difficult and dangerous. Whilst the deceased man appears to have been extremely mentally vulnerable, this doesn't mean he was physically compromised as tragically he proved. Wildlife Parks and Zoos in the UK are subject to stringent safety legislation overseen by government safety experts. As you're not one of those - and clearly have never even visited the Yorkshire Wildlife Park - your "dumb" comments say considerably more about you than anyonelse.

And no, ofcourse the tiger wasn't shot for behaving as tigers do. We're not gun- obsessed and trigger happy in this country.

It isn’t kept secret at all. These facilities exist for patients who have no expectation of being able to live independently or without significant support. And the ‘whacking great doses’ are to treat severe and enduring mental health conditions, not to make management easier. Many facilities also take patients who have been sectioned under the mental health act for their own protection and for that of society. The section isn’t always permanent and they are not just ‘locked up’ but actively treated.

I think we might be talking about slightly different things. I'm talking about a widespread issue with warehousing of LD/autistic people whose care isn't managed in the community but who are detained for extended periods in unsuitable settings.

Aren’t people even bothering to read the thread before commenting? What’s the point of even posting?

I think the knee jerk reactions from these posters are because they don't go to modern zoos and wildlife parks and they have a mental images of what zoos were like 50 years ago.

We have come a long way since then.

In an ideal world we wouldn't need to rescue lions and polar bears from horrible living conditions, we wouldn't need breeding programmes to protect endangered species and we wouldn't need to protect these animals from loss of habitat and poachers.

RampantIvy · 11/10/2026 17:59

Just watched Look North. People have been laying flowers at the park's entrance.

dustabsorber · 11/10/2026 18:00

Animals do escape Zoos and wildlife parks. Capybara like to make a run for it. There is on the loose at the moment. A bear got out in Japan and chased people.

ThatRedFish · 11/10/2026 18:02

Enclosures are designed to keep the animals in. That is their purpose. Keeping humans out would mean shutting them in a box. It is absolutely not their responsibility to stop people from getting in, whether it’s because they’re high, saw something on internet and thought would amaze everyone(my inclination!), additional needs or whatever else. Presumably one of above. I imagine it will be in news when investigation is clear. They’ll need to look at his phone, test for drug levels etc.

It is not YWPs fault at all.

Whistonia · 11/10/2026 18:03

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 11/10/2026 15:36

The issue is these aren’t secure and don’t cater to economies of scale. I’m not suggesting the setting should mix all the residents or it should be chaos, far from it. But there are now so many cases of mental disability they can’t all live in 1 house each.

Why should they be in secure accommodation if the person is not a risk. People can only be in secure accommodation if assessed as a serious risk to themselves or others and this decision needs to be regularly reviewed.

Disappointed100 · 11/10/2026 18:04

Jeez, I only managed to read a handful of pages of the thread.
Some of the comments are disgusting.
Even at the beginning, without any other facts, posters have decided he's an idiot or doing it for clicks or was selfish or on drugs.
Then others are almost glad he died, because "what did he expect?"
Others saying the tiger was dead; others saying the man and friends were "winding up" the tiger.

What the hell is wrong with people, that you can't work out that a) nobody of sane mind is going to jump into a tiger enclosure, b) he said/she said is not at all helpful to anyone, c) regardless of any evidence, a human has died in a horrific way, and they obviously have friends and family who now need to try to come to terms with all of this, while also seeing people making jokes and laughing about their loved one being killed online.

If that was possible I'm sure it could have been done. I doubt very much that Putin cares about the fate of the tigers and leopards in his country.

Google Putin's involvement in Wildlife initiatives and you'll find you are quite wrong.
@daisydaisy11 our local zoos are Knowsley Safari park and Chester zoo. They've developed treatments and vaccines for lots of diseases that will save lives, in the wild. Their conservation work has made a difference. You won't agree but your word, isn't law.
Yesterday evening, quite quickly, it was announced the man had died and the tiger wouldn't be euthanised. A bit of googling would have stopped the speculation and some dreadful comments.

Whenever there is a big news story like this, what do people get out of spreading or repeating misinformation?

Despite it being headline news for 24 hours even today people are saying stuff that is quite clearly not true.

Such an ignorant post. Yet again, IT IS NOT A ZOO

CheeseyNacho · 11/10/2026 18:10

Tryingtokeepgoing · 11/10/2026 15:42

The problem is that zoos are inherently more cruel and abusive to animals than leaving them in their natural environment, so it’d make more sense to ban zoos. An outcome I’d be happy with because I find it horribly depressing seeing animals caged for the entertainment of humans.

What would you propose happens to all the animals currently in zoos? Released into the wild where they wouldn’t last more than a few days?

Portmore · 11/10/2026 18:12

likelysuspect · 11/10/2026 14:01

There is no such thing as no risk. Risk exists, it can be mitigated to some extent, but unless the plan is for people with LD, extreme MH or ND to be locked up 27/7 then risk exists.

Most empowerment of service users is achieved by accepting that there will be risk and there may be harm, you try to risk assess around it but nothing has NO risk at all. That sort of mindset is unrealistic and dangerous in itself.

I said no risk of climbing in, not no risks at all to an individual.
