In the spirit of inclusivity, Aberdeen school describes cards made at Christmas as Winter cards

Children at this school have been making cards in the run up to Christmas for ages.

Many children still make Christmas cards during this activity and they are free to call them Christmas cards

However, the school announced they would be adopting the phrase "winter cards" to show "value and respect" to different cultures.
The email sent to families said: “To reflect this inclusivity in our communications, we refer to seasonal cards as “winter cards” rather than “Christmas cards”.
“This terminology helps ensure that our language is welcoming and inclusive of all members of our school community.
It added that families were still free to use the phrase Christmas cards if they preferred.

You can imagine the online reaction. The Deputy Headteacher received a threatening phone call

"Unfortunately, following the communications, our deputy head teacher received an abusive and threatening telephone call.

"This was followed by disappointing comments on social media suggesting that Christmas was somehow being removed from our school.
"I want to reassure you that is simply not the case"

We had Winterval in Birmingham. Haven't people learnt? I can imagine it's been done with the best intentions but I bet they didn't consult with the parents before doing this. It has come at the worst possible time for relations with other communities and it's spreading like wildfire online.

I'm an atheist I have no problem with schools making Christmas cards. Just don't try and force a religion on my son.

I am sure most people, regardless of faith or lack of faith, have no problem with Christmas Cards.

Winter cards is a stupid idea

It's ammunition for the Far Right. I follow a lot of Far Right people on Social media and it blew up on there straightaway. Lots of talk about it being a Christian country, how dare they, blaming Muslims for this etc

A racist dog whistle? If it gets ignored, the issues still carry on. It does bring people out on MN and it allows people to be challenged or ideally to justify their beliefs.

I can show you how I can challenge their beliefs on this thread. I've been busy for the past few days

Facts don't change minds. I have been reading a lot about how people's minds change. Arguing or name calling does not change minds.

Clarifying their beliefs, asking them to explain them and then asking them some questions helps

I was able to gently change someone's minds on BBC pay when he posted on X about ethnic minority pay. In fact, I am going to start a thread to show you how it's done

The school could have let people use the term they like without the email.

Pretty easy, really.

Overall category is Winter Cards.

Jessica makes a Christmas Card.
Jamie makes a Yule Card.
Ben makes a Hannukah Card.
Elsie makes a Season's Greetings Card.
Anaya makes a Diwali Card.
Jun makes a New Year Card.
Sama makes a card of a snowy scene with an owl in a tree.
Felicity makes a Lunar New Year Card (and thinks it's a bit early to be doing cards but it's fun, even if the only goat picture she could cut out to stick on it was a Julbock she got from Oskar when he was sorting through the images his big brother had printed out for him the night before).
Rebekah makes a card with a rabbit on because she likes rabbits. The fact that she's made it look positively Spring-like with yellow flowers and Bumblebees is studiously ignored. Dad grumbles a bit to Mum when it comes home and is told to shut up, she's given the bunny a little red hat so that's close enough.

It's not hard to pan out to the overriding category of Winter Cards instead of homing in on the differences between them. They're all cards. They're made in Winter. The class is therefore making Winter Cards.

Is Sama's card a Christmas Card or a Winter card?
What does Jessica's card look like?

Why is a Diwali or a Hannukah card a winter card? I know they are in Winter but so's Christmas. They are all religious festivals so do we need a subset of religious cards (I work in data analysis now)

Felicity is just over eager.

We all have a Rebecca in our classes. I bet she can't wait for Spring.

I don't think Cards made in Winter are Winter cards, A winter card would have some element of winter in like snow, sledges, snowflakes, snow balls

A Diwali or Hannukah card would have symbols of Diwali or Hannukah on them.
New Year - well it would be fireworks and maybe Big Ben,

A Christmas card falls down as it can have the religious elements of the Christmas story such as Jesus, Wise Men, Shepherds, Angels, A Nativit

Or the non religious elements of Christmas - a tree, stockings, Santa, etc

You believe a card made in winter is a winter card.

The problem is that Christmas cards do mark a religious festival, some people do object to this, others feel offended on behalf of others who don’t even care

Then they don't need to buy them.
It's not ok to mark other religious days but not mark one which is a big part of our wheel of the year.

It's really not Muslims doing this.

I know . I am taking the piss as these stories pop up at certain times of the year ( Christmas , Easter etc) . Alot of nonsense.

Rockpunkdisco · 10/10/2026 16:51

No way! It's being totally none inclusive not to allow the traditions of the country to continue.

It's not the other religions who have issues with the country they've moved to at whatever point in time to, rather some very warped people thinking it could possibly offend.

Yes isn’t it strange that the stories regarding undermining major cultural occasions take place in the run up to those occasions whilst they are being undermined…

I'm an analyst, too.

You're looking at subsets where I'm looking at the raw data before anybody asks about adding slicers.

I wonder what would happen if I went into a Muslim country and said I’m not comfortable with all this Muslim culture can we rename the traditions iso it’s not so religious based?

All the devout Christians on this thread shocked by this were surely even more shocked to learnt that someone purporting to defend Christianity was making threats to the school……….

I really feel for those posters, hearing of behaviour so at odds with the principles of Christianity,

I’m also curious OP, what makes you see this as ammunition for the far right? As far as I’m concerned nothing could turn me into a racist arsehole, particularly not a kerfuffle over cards, have you found reasonable thoughtful people of normal intelligence easily swayed to a racist worldview by guff? Given your concern about the far right, did you worry before posting that your post could be seen as a standard racist dog whistle?

someone purporting to defend Christianity was making threats to the school……….

What sort of threats?
'I'm going to report the school to Ofsted type threats or something more sinister?

You can shout all you like. You're not going to stop schools making winter cards with children. And you're not going to bully people into celebrating things because you say so. Religion isn't compulsory in the UK.

Why is religiously slaughtered meat increasingly the only meat option in some schools?

I wonder why this story came up in the run up to Christmas when the school are beginning to do Christmas cards and the school emails parents to say they are renaming them Winter cards but the children can call them Christmas Cards if they want,

I'm honestly struggling to understand why this story broke in the run up to Christmas when it could have come out any time of the year really

I see The Sun has completely misinterpreted what the school has done, even though if you bother to read to the end of the article, it does say the children are still allowed to make Christmas cards

Uproar from Scots parents after 'Scrooge' school BANS Christmas cards to avoid offending people

PARENTS have hit out after a school banned Christmas Cards to avoid upsetting non-Christian families.
Bosses at Kaimhill Primary in Aberdeen have asked youngsters to refer to the festive favourites as “Winter Cards”.

But the move has caused a storm of outrage and it’s understood a teacher received an abusive phone call.

Christopher McGovern, of the Campaign for Real Education, said: “This is woke madness.
“The stranglehold of political correctness is slowly but surely robbing Scotland of its Christian identity.
“Far from being ‘inclusive’ the school’s action is deeply exclusive – of Christianity.
“It takes us back to the celebration of the pagan, pre-Christian winter festival of Yule which was banned by the Scottish parliament of 1640.”
One local said: “Is this the end of Christmas? To me it feels like they are cancelling it. It’s the ultimate Scrooge move.
“It is scandalous. They are really sucking all the joy out of what is supposed to be a fun time of year.”

And at the bottom

A screenshot of the message was circulated online and went viral.
One poster asked: “Is this a joke?”
Another added: “What a disgrace. Children being used as political pawns.
“This strips them of their innocence and is a repulsive stance to take. Kaimhill school you should be ashamed.”
A Christmas Fair is still being held by the school’s parent teacher council next month.
It’s understood the school’s head was surprised and disappointed by the negative reaction and pointed out that Christmas wasn’t being banned.
The local authority revealed that the word is still used by staff and in the class.

I'm a Christian and it doesn't worry me. If a Pagan child wants to make a card that is appropriate for them why would I care. If they were saying Christian children can't make their card appropriate for Christmas then I'd object but there are other festivals that occur in winter and someone celebrating their festival doesn't detract from mine

The true spirit of Christmas threatening teachers.

RoadSign · 10/10/2026 21:14

Urghh.

I was once invited to a ‘Winter Gathering’. I texted my RSVP ‘We’d love to come to your Christmas party - thanks!’

The first Christmas card I get every year is from one of my Jewish friends.

NotSureICanDoIt · 10/10/2026 21:14

Our school is having an ‘Autumn’ disco rather than Halloween. Bloody ridiculous seeing as the children are still dressing up in Halloween outfits, the decorations are Halloween. Where does it stop?!

Threatening what though? 'I'm going to report you to the school governors/school inspectors/local press' are threats - or do you mean something akin to the Batley school teacher? Did the school contact the police about the phone call?

You've not noticed the discussions on here regarding halal meat in schools?

Indeed - I'm not sure why children whose religion requires them to eat religiously stunned meat at home can't just choose the vegetarian option at school. As per your previous post, why impose your religion on others.

Reported to the general public via social media. The best way to get a general verdict.

I don't tend to participate in discussions about the relative cruelty of one method of slaughter over another, be it halal, kosher or non religious slaughter, as i find it all animal slaughter undesirable; so, no I haven't seen this schools business.
I'm not exactly sure why you're addressing your second paragraph to me, given I haven't spoken in defence of halal meat and haven't voiced an opinion on the school menu thing.
However, I'm certainly not going to argue with you that children can choose the vegetarian option. Obviously I think it would be better if all children chose a vegetarian option.
