In the spirit of inclusivity, Aberdeen school describes cards made at Christmas as Winter cards

Children at this school have been making cards in the run up to Christmas for ages.

Many children still make Christmas cards during this activity and they are free to call them Christmas cards

However, the school announced they would be adopting the phrase "winter cards" to show "value and respect" to different cultures.
The email sent to families said: “To reflect this inclusivity in our communications, we refer to seasonal cards as “winter cards” rather than “Christmas cards”.
“This terminology helps ensure that our language is welcoming and inclusive of all members of our school community.
It added that families were still free to use the phrase Christmas cards if they preferred.

You can imagine the online reaction. The Deputy Headteacher received a threatening phone call

"Unfortunately, following the communications, our deputy head teacher received an abusive and threatening telephone call.

"This was followed by disappointing comments on social media suggesting that Christmas was somehow being removed from our school.
"I want to reassure you that is simply not the case"

We had Winterval in Birmingham. Haven't people learnt? I can imagine it's been done with the best intentions but I bet they didn't consult with the parents before doing this. It has come at the worst possible time for relations with other communities and it's spreading like wildfire online.

I'm an atheist I have no problem with schools making Christmas cards. Just don't try and force a religion on my son.

I am sure most people, regardless of faith or lack of faith, have no problem with Christmas Cards.

Winter cards is a stupid idea

Is it that time of year again? (Muslims want to ban Christmas stories). 🤣 Bit early.

Because people have used Winterval when they assume Christmas had been replaced by Winterval. I have read countless times people saying Birmingham replaced Christmas with Winteval.

Right wing and Far Right groups online are sharing the email screenshot this school sent out as part of their anti Muslim, white Christian Nationalist propaganda.

This is giving ammunition to the far right.

Edited

So you are saying what the school is promoting is left wing?

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 08/10/2026 23:12

A stupid move which is both generally annoying and a gift to racists who would garner support from this example of the very opposite of equality and respecting all cultures.

Ffs, it's Christmas.

AlexandraCarrington · 08/10/2026 23:14

But most cards have reindeer, snowmen, Santa etc on them,

'Santa' is religious - Santa Claus is Saint Nicholas.

Christmas is a religious festival - the clue is in the name - however anyone personally chooses to celebrate it.

It's really not Muslims doing this.

All of that. I'm appalled that the decision makers at the school didn't see this coming. It was so obvious that it would lead to division and feed those who want a stick to beat other copies and religions with.

It was sheer stupidity and as a fellow teacher, I'm mortified that fellow professionals could be so stupid. Schools all over the country in multi ethnic areas manage to make Christmas and other religious and cultural occasions inclusive, without renaming anything.

I haven't ever received a religious themed card at Christmas, Not even from the Catholics in my family

Really? None with angels, the nativity, a star, a church, shepherds?

You got me......

Yes, Christmas is a religious festival.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you believe people in the UK are celebrating the birth of Christ at Christmas?

That's what I said,

I recognise the symbols of Christmas when they're on a card.

Why are you surprised at that?

100% that. It's massively counter-productive.

I'm over posting I know, but this has infuriated me. Especially as we've already seen at least one post on this thread, blaming Muslims for something they've not done, nor would they.

Armorlux · 08/10/2026 23:28

My Muslim NDNs always give us a Christmas card and a lovely present too. We also give them a card, plus gift. We give them something for Eid and they give us lovely food - and life goes on.

The original Christmas cards had no religious references at all, just snowy scenes and the like. They were meant as a jolly greeting to friends and neighbours. That's all.

The Winterval thing in Birmingham was blown out of proportion. They didn't ban Christmas but it did cause a bit of grumbling in some quarters but not by other faiths. I could see the point of extending the festive season if it was good for businesses too.

Since then there has always been a huge, illuminated 'Happy Christmas Birmingham' displayed across the front of the Council House next to the Frankfurt Christmas Market every single year.

Christmas is mostly observed as a secular holiday by the majority so replacing the word is pointless and a bit sad.

Yes, those imaginary Muslims are incredibly busy.

The Winterval thing in Birmingham was literally a city council leaflet aiming to try and get people into the city centre for a series of events throughout the winter, culminating in a Christmas market. ‘Winterval’ was an attempt to come up with a title for these, not a replacement for Christmas.

The mention of Winterval suggests this is a bad faith post…..

TallSturdyGirls · 08/10/2026 23:53

I think the only course of action is to shoot everybody in Scotland. Or perhaps the UK. Its PC gone mad.

Edited because I misspelt shoot. I'm probably a fecking immigrant. I better also do myself in to make sure none of us infiltrate.

You clearly haven't read all of the OP 's posts then. Her entire point is that the school has not learned from the way the media misrepresented Winterval, and has handed the media more ammunition to divide people with.

Maybe I’m a bit older than you (I’m mid 50s). I guess also I’m surprised you’d notice and remember all the cards, but I suppose if you’re looking for religious imagery then maybe so.

Similar age to you

My Catholic Grandma probably sent such cards though

Some well meaning white people have gone a bit OTT, that's all.

There's really nothing to see here at all. Your kid can still make a Christmas card. Christmas is bloody everywhere from September and isn't going anywhere.

curliegirlie · 09/10/2026 10:00

If in any way true, it sounds like more of a clunkily phrased way of reassuring parents that the pupils can also make Divali and Hanukkah cards etc, but really the school could have predicted that it was likely to be jumped on by the likes of Reform, Daily Mail etc…

mumumental · 09/10/2026 10:15

It’s completely stupid. Christmas card is fine. I say that as an anti racist who is not religious.

Cla7 · 09/10/2026 10:23

I’m with you. It would be better if they did it the other way round: we’re doing Christmas cards but those who don’t do Christmas are welcome to make winter cards.

Christmas is a part of our culture and tradition (I’m not religious but I am all in on Christmas). I’ve also never come across anyone from another culture who felt offended by Christmas being celebrated, trying to avoid Christmas is a misguided attempt of inclusivity in my opinion.
