Feel rubbish after flu vaccine

I’ve been having them for a few years and never even know I’ve had them!?

I had the flu vaccine on Monday afternoon, was nauseous Monday evening, diarrhea and fever yesterday and feel only slightly better today.

The leaflet lists all of these as ‘very common’ side effects but I’ve yet to meet anyone else needing to take time off work due to a vaccine.

anyone else struggling after this years vaccine?

I had mine last Saturday morning, sore arm, but up at 5am with slight temperature and shivers, took paracetamol & felt rough all day Sunday.

yes but she caught the flu when she was in hospital and sneezing is a major part of flu I would say ,

Sneezing is not a major part of flu, no. It's not even one of the common symptoms. Screenshot from NHS website.

You didn't say she caught flu in hospital. You said she sneezed after having the jab and ended up in hospital due to pulling a muscle. I can't see the link at all.

Unless she is allergic to something in the jab which made her sneeze.

Statistically some people will have their flu jab as they are brewing a stomach bug/flu/appendicitis/heart attack/nasty cold. It’s most likely coincidence.

Exactly this!

I always react badly after my vaccine, DD who’s a doctor says it’s the vaccine working. says you get a little bit of flu, to immunise against full blown flu. So I put up with the side effects for a few days. Had swine flu ten years ago, never felt so ill. Remember after ten days feeling lousy in bed going to GP, because I needed signing off work. Dr telling me that he’d had hundreds of patients saying they had flu, but I was one of the few who actually had it. Took me another month to recover. Side effects are horrible , but I can’t risk being that sick again.

Your DD needs to go back to medical school, there's no "little bit of flu" in the vaccine, it's not a live virus at all. This is just an old wives tale.

lechatdhenri · 08/10/2026 00:56

The kids nasal vaccine seems to be causing more side effects this year too. My kids have had it every year and this is the first year they’ve been under the weather afterwards. Lots of their friends had cold symptoms or headaches starting the day after too.

The flu nasal spray used in the UK is a live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV). It contains:
Weakened (attenuated) versions of influenza viruses — usually several strains selected for that year's flu season.
The viruses are weakened so they can stimulate immunity but are not expected to cause influenza in healthy people.
Small amounts of stabilisers and other manufacturing ingredients, which vary by brand.
It does not contain a needle or injectable material, and it does not contain a full-strength live flu virus.

Before berating anyone get your facts correct first.

Wolfiefan · 08/10/2026 15:41

i have a very sore swollen bit on my arm. I was knocked a bit sideways but I’m in a fibro flare (and it’s that time of year when bugs are all over the place) so I wouldn’t blame the jab. I’m on immunosuppressants and have asthma. I would much rather risk some side effects from the jab than full blown flu.

I got my vaccination last week and the person administering it gave me some info as she was preparing it. One thing she explicitly told me was that it was not a live vaccine, so any flu-like symptoms I may experience afterwards would be due to contracting a virus separately, not from the vaccine itself.

gamerchick · 08/10/2026 15:53

The jab and the spray given to kids are made differently. No point in mixing them up.

Mydogisagentleman · 08/10/2026 15:56

I thought it was coincidence.
Sneezing, achy and incredibly thirsty and tired.

Nottogetapenny · 08/10/2026 16:18

I had the flu injection, last Thursday. Friday, I had a headache, sore arm and felt incredibly tired and a bit rough for most of the day. Saturday, just a bit of a headache and a sore arm. Sunday I was fine.

BobbleBear · 08/10/2026 16:28

DH felt rubbish for about 3 days afterwards but is fine now. I’m still waiting to get mine.

DangerousThingsILove · 08/10/2026 16:32

Sherararara · 07/10/2026 18:59

This is why I never have them.

Yeah, because risking a reaction is sooooo much better than actually having flu!! 🙄

DangerousThingsILove · 08/10/2026 16:33

I had mine last week. No reaction at all, not even a sore arm.

Er, your DC should know that only the nasal flu vaccine (spray) has live flu virus in it.

The flu vaccine does not.

She needs to go back to medical school and stop spouting crap.

Basildon4Eva · 08/10/2026 16:37

I had them three years in a row and was off work sick for a whole week all three times. I never get it now.

If you've been OK before though I'd be tempted to think it's bad luck and you were coming down with something anyway.

Greenlawnbrownlawn · 08/10/2026 17:00

No ill effects at all until last year when I was very under the weather for a day or two afterwards. Impossible to tell if it was cause and effect or coincidence, but I just had this year's this afternoon so waiting to see what happens.

Sarah2891 · 08/10/2026 17:02

My elderly parents felt fine after their flu jabs, thankfully.

RollonSpringplease · 08/10/2026 17:04

I had flu and Covid jabs last week. I was so ill for two days with a temperature of 39c. I still think it's totally worth it because if I'd caught the actual bugs I'd have been so much worse.

Basildon4Eva · 08/10/2026 17:38

DangerousThingsILove · 08/10/2026 16:32

Yeah, because risking a reaction is sooooo much better than actually having flu!! 🙄

I've had flu twice and tbh felt just as bad after the jab. Bedridden for a week in all cases - even the thought of going to the bathroom too much.

Plus I only get actual flu about once in 20 years. I can't be taking a off week in bed every year for the sake of a jab whose efficacy is questionable.

Yes it is. I always have a bad reaction as opposed to havent had proper flu in years. Same for my kids, my DS had the vaccine a few years ago and had ended up having hallucinations he reacted so badly. So we always opt out of the school vaccinations.

Exactly the same

Your level of reactions sound really unusual. The flu jab can’t give you flu. It’s possible you may have picked up another infection/illness around the time you had the jab.

flu jabs are generally effective - and much better than having flu!

I never said it could give you flu. And there are numerous posts on this thread from people stating they have similar reactions.
so not unusual at all, in fact common. The only thing unusual is your comments.

ForPeas · 08/10/2026 20:12

I get it every year and the side effects vary. This year I haven't had any side effects at all other than a slightly sore arm for an afternoon.
