Feel rubbish after flu vaccine

I’ve been having them for a few years and never even know I’ve had them!?

I had the flu vaccine on Monday afternoon, was nauseous Monday evening, diarrhea and fever yesterday and feel only slightly better today.

The leaflet lists all of these as ‘very common’ side effects but I’ve yet to meet anyone else needing to take time off work due to a vaccine.

anyone else struggling after this years vaccine?

I didn’t need time off work but I really didn’t feel right after this year’s- am usually fine. My pharmacist told me the last few years jabs have been slightly less effective so they’d added something new this year to stir up the immune system- think he said a component of shark? No idea if that’s related

I had mine today - no symptoms at all. Tbf I am pretty good with injections - I had shingles and pneumonia jabs last week and felt fine with all of them. I had heard horrible things about the shingles jab too.

seahorsessky · 07/10/2026 22:27

My husband was like this, me none. We're all different, but I would say rest after tends to make it better, thinking back to other jabs. I get you might not always be able to!

Felt surprisingly crap for 48 hours, fever and guts churning. Hope I'm over the worst of it now...

MimiGC · 07/10/2026 22:34

I had mine yesterday and haven’t had any side effects at all, aside from a slightly sore arm when I rolled on it during the night.

Rainbow1901 · 07/10/2026 22:35

Both DH and I had a day of feeling rough, cold, nauseous and generally really under the weather. As advised we took paracetamol and did what ever we needed to get over it. Strangely even though we had the jabs two minutes apart - DH was poorly the same day - for me it was two days later.
I've now got a sore arm from having the second shingles jab this morning. Didn't dare ask if the Covid 19 jab was covered by the flu jab. I'm not up for unnecessary punishment by having yet another jab.😅

Squalene isn’t in the standard flu jab. It is in the over 65s one though.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/10/2026 22:38

Had mine this morning. Not even a sore arm. Fit as a fiddle as is DH.

Negroany · 07/10/2026 22:41

I was ill last week - achy all over, headache, fever, sick Sat. Not very ill, just off colour.

If I'd had my flu jab just before, I might have thought it was that.

I had the jab Monday and was fine.

I suspect this is just a coincidence. There's a lot of bugs around.

Covid is not covered by the flu jab.

longtompot · 07/10/2026 22:42

Had mine Saturday and felt sick Sunday and a bit achy. Much better when I woke up Monday morning. I too don't usually have any after affects from them

ShakyBake · 07/10/2026 21:38

Old neighbour of ours had a yearly one religiously for 15 years and do you know what happened last year? She caught a cold and sneezed so hard she pulled a stomach muscle and was in hospital for 3 days. More trouble then they are worth

A cold isn't flu though, is it? Sneezing isn't generally a flu symptom. So I have no clue what your post is suggesting.

SatsumaCandlesCloves · 07/10/2026 22:48

All ok here myself and DH

Gabbycat245 · 07/10/2026 22:51

Had mine last Friday, DH the week before, both fine. Barely even a sore arm this year! DD has her nasal spray this week - fingers crossed no ill effects! In any event, I've already had 2 x cough/cold viruses since the schools went back, DD has too. I had a bit of a dodgy stomach during one bout, so I reckon there's more chance of any adverse reactions actually just being a virus.

placemats · 07/10/2026 22:51

The reactions are so much milder than the flu, which can kill you.

Middlemarch123 · 07/10/2026 22:53

I always react badly after my vaccine, DD who’s a doctor says it’s the vaccine working. says you get a little bit of flu, to immunise against full blown flu. So I put up with the side effects for a few days. Had swine flu ten years ago, never felt so ill. Remember after ten days feeling lousy in bed going to GP, because I needed signing off work. Dr telling me that he’d had hundreds of patients saying they had flu, but I was one of the few who actually had it. Took me another month to recover. Side effects are horrible , but I can’t risk being that sick again.

ClimbingBear · 07/10/2026 22:53

I had mine last week, Thursday I think. Was absolutely fine. Not even a sore arm. The pharmacist couldn’t even see where it had gone in to put the plaster on!

ShakyBake · 07/10/2026 22:54

Negroany · 07/10/2026 22:44

yes but she caught the flu when she was in hospital and sneezing is a major part of flu I would say ,

JudyTeeny · 07/10/2026 22:57

I had a headache the next day but no sore arm this year. Some years I've felt awful for a couple of days. Nothing compared to having full blown flu though.

ThatGoldScroller · 07/10/2026 22:58

I also don’t know anyone who gets ill after flu vaccine.
I always felt rough a day after covid vaccine though.
Problem is flu vaccine is at a virally time of year so hard to know if you caught something in the place you got the vaccine!

ChaosDreamV2 · 07/10/2026 22:58

I had mine last week and was absolutely fine with it. Bit of an achey arm but was grand the next day. I get it every year due to having brittle asthma. Would rather have a couple of days of common side effects than end up in ITU from community acquired flu 😬

theblame · 07/10/2026 22:59

ShakyBake · 07/10/2026 22:54

Not really. Sneezing with a cold yes
flu comes on suddenly. I had norovirus and woke up on day 3 wondering why I was shivering and it was flu. You’ll be fine and then your bones hurt, I couldn’t stand the duvet touching me, shaking with cold but burning up and it took me out for nearly 3 weeks. I felt like Bambi with it

Patriciastaser · 07/10/2026 23:22

Statistically some people will have their flu jab as they are brewing a stomach bug/flu/appendicitis/heart attack/nasty cold. It’s most likely coincidence.

WhatNextImScared · 07/10/2026 23:24

One year I was really ill, got full flu symptoms for 48 hours. Most years I’m fine. Had mine today so planning to take ibuprofen before bed just in case.

WhatNextImScared · 07/10/2026 23:26

FWIW, one of the years I had zero symptoms after the vax I then got horrific flu in January and was sick for about 5 weeks, with a 4 month old baby. My mother had to move in for a fortnight. So now I treat side effects as a good sign that im actually responding to the jab.
