Old toys you wish were still available

Just spent twenty minutes trying to find a tiny piano keyboard toy for my kids for their stockings this year. I had one when I was little and I LOVED it! It was probably only about four of five inches big and came with a little song book. Has anyone seen these or do they just not exist any more?

Are there any other retro toys we all fondly remember but can no longer get?

This mini piano is about A4 paper width in size, and the music book of nursery songs is attached to it. I don't have a better picture as I gave it as a gift last May, but it's similar to the screenshot attached. I think I got it in an independent bookshop.

I also loved my post office that folded down into a suitcase - hours of joy with that one.

Magnetic Theatre was my favourite when I was little, I spent hours making up plays. I kept it and dd adored it (and now works in theatre!)

It had been discontinued but I have just googled and they make it again! Not identical but very similar! I may have to buy one

i have a lovely warm wave of nostalgia when I think about my Treehouse with a family of four, a lift and garage in the trunk, and a little swing. You would press on the treetop which would lift up and reveal the living quarters.

Christmas 1976 at a guess 🥰

I've still got mine, it's up in the loft. Best present ever!

I've still got all my Weebles, with the house, aeroplane, farm, train

And Tiny Tears

Does anyone remember Popoids? The cylinders which could be stretched and bent into rigid shapes while making popping sounds, and models could be built with them.

Blingismything · 08/10/2026 21:25

Have very fond memories of my Warm Bake Oven. Also adored my Sweet April and Pippa dolls. Indoor fireworks (not a toy) were great, would like to revisit all of these.

Bayko. Not sure whether I've spelt it right. I'm actually too young for it but we had a set that had been passed down from the generation before and I loved it!

(For anyone who doesn't know, it was a toy for building houses - it worked by slotting metal rods into a baseboard and sliding plastic brick parts down between them.)

Clackers🤣🤣 definitely wouldn't pass H&S checks

Hatty65 · 08/10/2026 21:32

I had a Shaker Maker with Scooby Doo figures. It wasn't terribly successful, but I reckon I could do it now. I might have had a Flintstones one too, now I come to think of it. 1970 edition.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 08/10/2026 21:34

I LOVE playing Holly and the ivy 🤩

Was that the thing with rubber moulds inside it?

Ooh I had one too , I loved it. I think mine must of been Christmas in the very early 80s
I also had Kalidoscope, spirographs, Macano, tonka trucks, and anything that glowed in the dark .
But sadly no mini piano.🥺

Oh and proper lego that wasn't a model of anything, you had to used your imagination to build your starship/ house / dog/ car

scalt · 09/10/2026 08:29

Are Plaster of Paris sets still a thing? Rubber moulds of characters, for you to make the casts, then paint them.

This is what I mean although they used to be about a fiver I think

I had that exact song book but my piano was blue. It lasted for many many years and I loved it so much! My DD would love one of those now.

Yes it was. I think you poured a mix of powder and water in and then shook it about. It made sort of rubbery figures. (With bits missing if you didn't get your stuff shaken into all the crevices of the mould)

Just remembered, I had this as a small child.

I used to love the get along gang! I can still remember the words to the theme tune!

I had one of those mini pianos, I absolutely loved it! I think it was a holiday souvenir when I was eight or nine. I remember showing it to my piano teacher; I had piano lessons in real life at the time and somehow thought this mini version would help, and was very disappointed by her less than positive reaction.

This thread is bringing back so many memories, like others I was a My Little Pony and Care Bears child of the 80s. If I could bring a toy back, it would be Speak and Spell (yes, I was a total geek/swot/whatever your local word was at that time), or Strawberry Shortcake who smelled incredible. Rainbow Brite or Poochie would also be a delight to see again, as would Tomy Lights Alive.

LoveheartBear · Yesterday 01:22

I am currently going through a nostalgic phase, and I ordered a fair few of my old childhood toys off of Vinted last week!

This included a Keyper (my original one was stolen in infants school 😭), My Little Pony x 3 (1st Gen), a Snugglebun, and some trolls 🥰. I purchased the new version of Rainbow Brite a while ago now. I’m in my element!

Proper Sindy dolls & the house with all the furniture. I collect them & have several original dolls from the era I had them as a child, I've also got some of the new ones that came on sale a couple of years ago, they aren't a patch on the original ones. I would love it if someone brought the original ones back with proper covered joints & the lovely outfits we used to be able to buy.

Oh yes we had tons of Oh Penny stuff. And this Kiddiecraft Webster spider house full of plastic spiders with wheels.
