Old toys you wish were still available

Just spent twenty minutes trying to find a tiny piano keyboard toy for my kids for their stockings this year. I had one when I was little and I LOVED it! It was probably only about four of five inches big and came with a little song book. Has anyone seen these or do they just not exist any more?

Are there any other retro toys we all fondly remember but can no longer get?

Major Minor (music game)
Cadbury Chocolate Vending Machine
Stylophone

Lemonademoney · 08/10/2026 16:46

Yes! The Cadbury vending machine! Do you remember when you’d get mini Dairy Milk and Bournville bars in Roses tins? I’d take a couple to play make believe with my dolls as they were just the right size.

I’m beginning to think my kids have missed out on some classic stuff 😂

This is what I mean although they used to be about a fiver I think

Yes! This is exactly what I was remembering.

We had a cadbury's machine too, I think it used to take 2ps? But I think it mysteriously disappeared quite quickly when my mum realised how expensive the tiny chocolates were!

Chemistry sets! Unthinkable now.

I had a magnificent one, which somebody had given to me as a present: it had real chemicals, real glass test tubes, and a real spirit burner; but even I was nervous about using it. We only got it out once or twice, with parental supervision, and only did a couple of the experiments in it. I read about some of the others when I started learning chemistry at school, but still never dared to use the set.

I had one my experiments were mainly(ok all) seeing what cococtions would burn.
Totally unsupervised..ace.

I was going to say this. I mainly used it for burning magnesium but it was amazing. I looked for one for DS and they just seem to be about testing potatoes for starch and other boring things now

Also Fabulous Fred, which was fabulous. Dad got it for us because the shop had sold out of Simple Simon or Simon Says or whatever it t was but Fred was vastly superior www.handheldmuseum.com/Mego/FabFred.htm

There was a game, I think it was called King Kong, it was like a pinball machine inspired play at home game, with a little ball bearing you had to get up an obstacle course. I loved it!

I loved my Teddy Ruxpin, my mum got it second hand from a charity shop and I thought it was the best thing ever!
Also glow worms (my DS2 would love one of those for bedtime!)

Zigzaggyzig · 08/10/2026 19:34

My 3 year old picked out a kaleidoscope from Flying Tiger last weekend. Was only £2.

Nofeckingway · 08/10/2026 19:36

@LBB2020 I read somewhere that Teddy Ruxpin are worth a lot of money now. We Bear in the Blue House toys around that kids loved playing with .

the nostalgia of this thread is bringing me joy! I was My Little Pony and Care Bear obsessed and had nearly all of them including the buildings. Then my mum got rid of them all!! Devastated even now.

The game 'Downfall'.

I still have my old one! Must get it out for the DC. But I just checked and it looks like there are loads of them available second hand for reasonable prices.

Ilovemum · 08/10/2026 20:18

Grape escape- it was the best playdoh game. Tried to get it as I thought daughter would love it- it's expensive.

They have similar in the book section at the large garden centres near me. Maybe in one near you?

TheRosesAreInBloom · 08/10/2026 20:21

i have a lovely warm wave of nostalgia when I think about my Treehouse with a family of four, a lift and garage in the trunk, and a little swing. You would press on the treetop which would lift up and reveal the living quarters.

Christmas 1976 at a guess 🥰

Iloveagoodnap · 08/10/2026 20:30

Not a toy but we were at a museum recently and they had a typewriter kids were allowed to use. My daughter loved it so I looked online to see if toy typewriters exist or cheap real ones but no, only very expensive new real ones or quite expensive ‘vintage’ real ones.

I had a lot of My Little Ponies too and the show stable and nursery. My parents kept them in their loft and my daughter played with them when she was younger. They are now back in the loft. Also up there are my brothers power rangers, my cricket doll and my bluebird a la carte kitchen. Boxes of sylvanian families and homes live up there too, as well as my cadbury chocolate dispenser, my mr frosty and sooty, sweep, Zippy and George. The oldest thing up there is my button moon playset.

I love that my parents stored them. There is also a mountain of Disney videos when they were first released and a vhs player. The old amstrad computer is up there with some cassettes and a typewriter. Their loft is a museum of my childhood.
