Thank you all for the encouraging and constructive feedback- will take them on board for the next one. @Summer26woohoo from start to finish - about 2 days , I mostly paint in the evenings as a tool to calm my nervous system so that I don't wake up with high cortisol which keeps me anxious all day.

Someone asked about the YouTube videos I use- well I use them mostly to understand techniques, colours etc. I have found https://www.youtube.com/@Nianiani
https://www.youtube.com/@KarenRiceArt

https://www.youtube.com/@SunlitBrushstrokes

Beginner friendly.

@TheBusyRaven you wanted to know how I taught myself- I invented in some good paper and basic set of colours and practiced how to blend, layer etc for weeks- well I am learning even now! but I really tried my best not to be intimidated by the water! Every time I failed I tried to understand the reason and kept trying to correct the technique-by using the YouTube videos. One thing I find very useful is painting everyday helps …you gradually start feeling more confident and try to push yourself.

Before you continue to YouTube

I think it looks fab and I am very jealous. I am in a similar situation regarding anxiety but my artistic talent is sub zero so I have taken up colouring in.

I have at least bought an adult colouring book and felt tip pens

Lilacspring · 06/10/2026 15:00

It really is brilliant!

Awww, that's good! Smile

That’s fantastic!

Your colour and light is excellent. You have a good technique with the water colour paint. You definitely have talent.

I would recommend looking into perspective a bit more - the curves on your jar (top, fluid and base) aren't matching up quite right, and there is a similar issue with the end of the honey dipper.

Keep going!

I quite like the effect of wonky perspective. Its a bit abstract. Could it be exaggerated and presented as an intentional stylistic choice rather than looking like a technical error?

SeedsOfReason · 06/10/2026 15:46

I like it, and I think the rather skewed perspective looks like an intentional quirk and doesn't detract from the effect.

This is my level of painting after a few months of messing around. Nowhere near as good as OP but I do enjoy it.

Well done! I’m an artist who avoids watercolour 😂
Agree with the constructive criticism around perspective. It can take a while to get used to it but it’s fun to learn.
Your use of colour is fantastic.

Very jealous as I wish I could use watercolours! I like acrylic and oils if I paint.

Yours are gorgeous too!

Ludijo · 06/10/2026 15:51

It's got some lovely qualities, the use of the paint is very nice.
Next step I'd suggest learning about perspective (tricky in a subject like this) and values/shading. Try some grey scale value exercises and some perspective exercises.
Keep on, it's a fab start

Woollybee9 · 06/10/2026 15:58

Love this!

Tryagain26 · 06/10/2026 16:00

It looks great to me. I certainly couldn't do it.
But what matters is did you enjoy don't it? Did it help with your anxiety? You shouldn't need to get validation from other people.

AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder · 06/10/2026 16:28

That's much better than I'd expect of a self-taught beginner! Really good. You've done an amazing job of showing the way the light falls and the different tones and textures of the honey and the jar.

If you're doing it partly as a way of easing your anxiety, the most important thing is to enjoy it and express yourself, so don't lose sight of that enjoyment by getting bogged down in a quest for perfection. But you've obviously got a naturally artistic eye!

Thank you. I’ve decided I’m more of a fun illustration/kids picture book style of art than anything serious. But it’s good fun and better than being slumped in front of the tv.

Triskellion75 · 06/10/2026 17:10

Wow, that's amazing! Well done, you've got a real talent.

PeanutPies · 06/10/2026 19:20

@IzzyLeng i think they are pretty good- please keep going. You have captured the shadows and creases in the blouse/waistcoat really well. And the mushroom and the lady both look like the illustrations you see in children’s books…well done! I love illustration type art as well , find them fun and not very restrictive- I can be free if you know what I mean! I tried a few black ink ones which again I think helps build confidence in making errors but keep going…I felt that helped both my art and my anxiety!! This is a fun piece and a black ink I tried a few months back … needs improvement but I felt safe to make errors!

EBearhug · 06/10/2026 22:59

I think your use of colour I great. I agree that you could work on perspective a bit, but it's not a major thing - and if you're enjoying it, that's the most important thing.
