How does my watercolour look for a self taught beginner?

I love it. I’m also trying to teach myself to paint watercolour and am feeling really stuck. I watch numerous videos and have bought books and just am still rubbish. Think 6yo primary school kid rubbish. So please do share any channels or books you e found useful. I’m actually thinking of trying acrylic paint even oils instead as someone said watercolour is harder.

It’s great, and what a productive way to manage your anxiety!

Well done OP, I hope you are very proud of yourself! 💐

That's really good. Glass is hard, but you got that and the movement of the fluids well, especially for a beginner. I'd say take time with your initial drawing and proportions.

Hang that, be proud, and keep going.

I'm doing a class that's very realistic right now and it's tough because my normal style is looser, but I'm learning a lot.

OldWallpaper · 05/10/2026 16:58

It’s great! 😃

IamEarthymama · 05/10/2026 17:03

As someone who does colouring in as a mindfulness exercise and is always saying in Art Galleries ""How do they do that? I think that is amazing!
🤩

Fabulous! I love this

Middlemarch123 · 05/10/2026 21:22

It’s really good @PeanutPies , you should be proud. And if it’s helping your anxiety, then that’s amazing. Keep doing what you’re doing, you have a real talent x

Your colour and light is excellent. You have a good technique with the water colour paint. You definitely have talent.

I would recommend looking into perspective a bit more - the curves on your jar (top, fluid and base) aren't matching up quite right, and there is a similar issue with the end of the honey dipper.

Keep going!

Exactly what I was thinking (both the good bits and the bits that you can work on improving).

Brokenfurnitureandroses · 05/10/2026 22:42

Honestly I would put that in my wall, it’s fantastic, such talent.

Random321 · 05/10/2026 23:47

I think it's fabulous.
I wish I could paint like that.

Bonus that you've found something that helps your anxiety too. Fair play.

Theblueboy · 05/10/2026 23:49

Absolutely fantastic!
Im no artist though.

AnsweringAllTheQuestions · 06/10/2026 00:14

That’s amazing!!

Summer26woohoo · 06/10/2026 00:21

So good op! Wow.

How long does it take you to do something like that?

Yes watercolour is hard imo. Because the paint is translucent you need a really thorough understanding of subtractive colour theory in ways you can skirt around with oil and acrylic.

You also need to invest in really good watercolour. Recommend Daniel smith. The good news is you only need 6 colours. Really good paper, stretching boards, and masking fluid. That’s going to set you back around £150

6 colours; Warm yellow, cool yellow, warm red, cool red, warm blue and cool blue.

And that’s how you get onto learning that the only true warm colour is orange and there’s no such thing as a true cool imo.

I love it. And I don’t have the patience for it.

Gateappreciation · 06/10/2026 01:24

Pretty impressive.

Vates · 06/10/2026 06:38

I think it looks great and would be happy if I could produce that! I love art but don't have the natural ability. It can be both fun and soothing though to paint.

Autumnleafgonk · 06/10/2026 07:08

It looks great! I do watercolour too, it is tricky and it doesn't always do what you want it to but it is so relaxing to do.

I don't enjoy drawing so I sometimes use davinci eye app to trace the basic shapes or check what I've done is accurate.

I use Arches not, Etchr Perfect Sketchbook, Daniel Smith and Holbein. What are you using?

Someone asked about tutorials, I like Paul Clark, Anna Bucciarelli and Louise DeMasi all on you tube.

TheLurpackYears · 06/10/2026 07:16

Cracking effort.
Here’s some food for thought.
What’s the plan for the back ground? Would a jar of honey look like that against start black? Obviously there is a source of light coming from behind to the left, but the jar itself doesn’t look like there is black behind it. Things reflect the colours around them.

HambleTheDoll · 06/10/2026 07:18

Love it too. Well done. Anxiety is dreadful so to find a way to combat it like this is brilliant.

Just what I was going to say.

Great job, though, OP.
