Crisis What Crisis? Is my friend over doing the stockpiling and am I too? Continuation thread (2)

Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

I'm moving it over to chat from AIBU as it makes a bit more sense to be there at this point.

Previous thread
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5576816-aibu-to-think-my-friend-is-overdoing-emergency-stockpiling?page=1

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.

This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

We are however going through a period where various governments throughout Europe think there is an elevated risk of some kind of problem due to global instability and we should start to get our heads around the possibility of needing to be ready for anything.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

So this is for everything from tips and considerations about what might be a good idea to do /save minimise potential risks to just straight old political bollocks talk about how things are developing.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendations are:
https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

This does actually explicitly say to write a personalised plan for your household which everyone knows and understands and to talk about the issues you may face to help you be able mobilise for any situation which might arise. Which is exactly what this thread is ultimately for.

Get prepared for emergencies - Prepare

How to get informed and put a plan in place to prepare if an emergency comes to you in your area.

There are increasing noises on twitter that Trump is going to send in ground troops after the mid terms.

At this stage this is purely speculation and I stress this.

But it has gone very quiet and the thought process from many is that he will escalate after the election. There is no resolution to the situation.

And Trumps comment last night about California being nuked seem to tie with an expectation of escalation.

There's also noise that the Saudis are really starting to struggle with getting oil out after houthi attacks over the last week.

“Antibiotics are selling out as residents rush to pharmacies and stock up on face masks and hand sanitizer. Around 200 people are being monitored, and preschools have distributed protective equipment.”

FindingMeno · 06/10/2026 08:32

Yikes. The Siberian lab thing is definitely putting the wind up me.
Knowing that pneumonic plague is fatal unless antibiotics are administered in the first 24 hours, there is no earthly reason why that lab worker wouldn't immediately get them/ request them.
We are not being told the truth.

FindingMeno · 06/10/2026 08:34

And, just at the point you think Trump can't get any more insane, there he is...
What a mess.

Unless they have come up with a new strain that antibiotics are ineffective against, to use as bioweapon.

FindingMeno · 06/10/2026 08:38

At least in response to all the fantastic updates on this thread I used my nail varnish remover, while I still have it, to take off my toenail polish.
I will not go into the apocalypse with chipped nail varnish.
There's standards you know.

Well, exactly.

I’m forced to take this thread seriously as redtoothbrush normally speaks sense on threads.
Off to do some prepping. 😩

It's our sense of humour which keeps us sane FindingMeno!

Oh believe me I'm checking my own sanity at this point.

But when you wake up to Kay Burley retweeting a video of Donald Trump saying that the loss of the entire cities of San Diego and Los Angeles is a 'very small price to pay' to a packed MAGA crowd, you kinda hit the dawning realisation there's a mad man playing chicken with a bunch of people who are known for suicide bombing and have the entire oil producing Gulf under siege which we are completely dependent on for the functioning of our society you tend to have a bit of a moment.

And THEN you read that there may be a plague outbreak in Siberia and you go, fair enough that's no less scary or less plausible than the President of the USA not being arsed about the lives of 5.28million US citizens.

Nuke or Plague? Pick your preferred poison.

I think this is the point where Brits traditionally sit down and make a cup of tea.

I've just watched that vid of DT saying Los Angeles and San Diego are a small price to pay.
The cheering sycophants. This is chilling.

To be clear, this is like Andy Burnham saying it would be a small price to pay if Russia nuked Oxford and Cambridge, and a Labour Party and Labour voting audience cheering the idea of two whole British cities being reasonable, indeed welcomed, collateral damage in some mad power scheme.
And still he's in office, not carted away and locked up.

Cuppa tea @RedToothBrush ? ☕️🫖🍰

Yep, definitely a 'cup of tea' moment or for some it'll be 'I'm getting hammered'.

Steve Lookner covering the French rioting live now on Agenda Free TV

PriorPreparation · 06/10/2026 11:15

It's intolerable and inappropriate language by the head of free world but I'm hoping by now people have learned not to take him that literally or seriously.

Putin absolutely knows Trump is bluffing but he also knows people in those places will be disturbed, and those people may not vote for Trump next time round.

GentleSheep · 06/10/2026 14:22

Something fishy about all this, isn't there.

Holeymoley28 · 06/10/2026 15:01

Fishier than a fish mongers.

Much like Covid though tbh. Very shhh shh look over there nothing to see here. People dying nope nope.

RedToothBrush · 06/10/2026 15:05

Today gets better.

The former head of Germany's Foreign Intelligence Service has been arrested for espionage.

France tested a missile being fired from a nuclear sub, with an audience of President Macron watching from a nearby ship. Nice footage for the camera that one.

Afp news agency reporting that 40 volunteers took part in the country’s first overnight air raid shelter exercise.

3 commercial ships attacked inside NATO waters. One sunk off Romania yesterday and tomorrow more attacked today off Bulgaria (including one sunk). Hit by drones.

Masked pro-palestinian protesters blockaded BAE Systems in Samlesbury and Newcastle for hours. For the second day in a row.

None of this is normal.

Of and there's a potential hurricane brewing off the USA Gulf States which might hit this weekend. You know those oil refineries👀

Oh so that's where he is whilst his countryfolk are rioting! Getting a nice publicity shot. 'My missile is bigger than yours, Putin'.

The tins of fruit were suspiciously low in Morrisons today, except for the tinned prunes.
For the first time in a very long time, as I don't usually drink alcohol, I bought a small bottle of vodka - thought it might come in handy for various uses; medicinal, sterilising, preserving and swigging back when it all gets too crazy!

It was for Preparedness Week a couple of weeks ago. Several cities did it. It was interesting to listen to them reporting back.
