What do you expect/what do your children call your friends ie if they’re called Mark is it Uncle Mark or Aunt Rachel or just Mark?

I grew up calling my mum's friends Aunty X (also Asian on that side).

But now, thinking of my glamorous child-free London friends and when they play football in the garden with my kids, I think they'd feel ancient if the kids called them aunty Val and uncle Ben etc.

Just first names. But they call their bio Aunts and Uncles by first names too - I’ve never liked the formality of titles.

Simonjt · 02/10/2026 06:14

Aunty and uncle for all of our friends/elders.

FunTimesInTheRain · 02/10/2026 06:38

Just first names. At first did consider using Auntie for my two best friends but one of them had the same first name as their actual Auntie so decided it was too confusing. Growing up long term family friends that were my parents age were Auntie/Uncle.

SisSuffragette · 02/10/2026 06:40

Auntie first name. I still call my mum's friends auntie 😅

lapuf · 02/10/2026 06:49

Auntie/uncle for close friends here, too. I still call my mum’s two best friends auntie and her cousin too as she’s an only child so no siblings to call auntie or uncle. I don’t correct my kids if they drop uncle or auntie unless it’s one of our sisters/brother so a blood relative or in law. We’re West Country.

Toothsome · 02/10/2026 06:52

DS doesn’t even address his actual aunts and uncles as ‘Auntie’ or ‘Uncle’, so no.

Lifewasapillow · 02/10/2026 06:55

They call them by their names. Only their family aunt / uncles are called that. White Brit, down south.

Same here.

SquigglePigs · 02/10/2026 07:18

First names for the most part. Godparents are Aunty and Uncle though.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 02/10/2026 07:21

By their names.

But they call their actual uncles by their names too.

MellowSubmarine · 02/10/2026 07:45

First names. But that’s also what they call their actual aunts and uncles, and what I called mine. I never said “aunty Amy” etc.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 02/10/2026 07:50

I never said aunt/uncle for actual relatives (Im in my late 50s). I wasnt aware of aunt/uncle for non-relatives until i was in my teens when i had a friend who did it.

Friends' children, my nephews and nieces just call me by my name.

Weirdpig · 02/10/2026 07:54

First names only. We had one set of parents' friends growing up, who we called uncle and auntie, but they were abusive to their children, which put me right off calling them uncle and auntie.

We’re in Glasgow so everyone is auntie or uncle

even in my 40s I still refer to my mums friend as my Auntie Karen

I have never heard of that being a Glaswegian thing?

Savvysix1984 · 02/10/2026 08:13

Usually first names to them directly for aunts and uncles but if referencing them my dc will usually say ‘auntie Sarah’. Friends are just first names.

ItsAlwaysTwins · 02/10/2026 08:16

My children are adults now, but in my family we only ever use first names for aunts and uncles - so the idea of using aunt or uncle for non-relatives is even more ludicrous.

CocoPlum · 02/10/2026 08:22

First names. We don't even use Auntie and Uncle for my actual siblings - when they were learning to talk it was much easier for them to say the first name only and it stuck.

Mcdhotchoc · 02/10/2026 08:30

One of my best friends have always been called Auntie. The others just their name.

Onelifeonly · 02/10/2026 08:35

Even as a child I found it awkward to use Auntie or Uncle, even for my real relations - though we were never very close anyway. My kids are grown up now - all the adults in their lives, relatives or otherwise, have always been known to them by their first names. (Other than grandparents and us as parents)

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 02/10/2026 08:39

Auntie name and uncle name

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 02/10/2026 08:39

Auntie name and uncle name

Lexibletheflexible · 02/10/2026 08:40

Close friends they've known since they were little are aunt or uncle.

chichi001 · 02/10/2026 08:40

First names.

Auntie and uncle is reserved for their aunties and uncles

ShadowManCometh · 02/10/2026 08:41

I do find it weird that my SIL who is 50 gives her aunt and uncle their full title so it is aunty Joan and uncle Norman every time she opens her mouth. Dh just calls them Joan and Norman. It would mean my DC would have to call them great aunty Joan etc which they themselves said is too much.

As children everybody was aunty or uncle, incredibly confusing for us to know who we were actually related to. My sister was the first to have children and said that only actual aunts and uncles were going to be called this. All her friends are just their first names. As our children have got older they dropped the aunty part so I am just my first name which I am fine with and same with my sister.
