What do you expect/what do your children call your friends ie if they’re called Mark is it Uncle Mark or Aunt Rachel or just Mark?

First names - usually I introduced them as "Ms Smith" or whatever and waited for the friend to say "oh call me Mary". For my best friends who've been around since they were born that didn't apply.

I grew up calling my parents' friends Aunt and Uncle. took dh a while to figure out who was a real aunt or uncle and who was a friend.

Aunts and uncles are family relatives - either by blood or marriage. Friends are not so it’s first names unless your friends vehemently object!

Yogafiend · 01/10/2026 23:56

Aunts and uncles if close friends. Otherwise by their first names.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 01/10/2026 23:56

My kids call all my best friends aunts and uncle x. They know who their actual aunties and uncles are but it’s created closeness and they all like it that way

Technically yes, but we can kinda do whatever we want :-)

On “my side”, they call my best friend Auntie Name. None of my other friends.

On dad’s side, all elders (adults of any age) are Auntie and Uncle (Nigerian community, very common to address elders as Auntie and Uncle).

Asian so always Aunty!

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 02/10/2026 00:08

Mr or Mrs so and so for fleeting or more distant contacts, Auntie and Uncle so and so for regular and friendly.
A child using an adult's first name seems disrespectful to me but I am of a generation that children were expected to be very polite at all times and to do as they are told.

i dont realy have any but if i did aunt

AgnesMcDoo · 02/10/2026 00:24

First names.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/10/2026 00:51

In our family you call real uncles and aunts (and their long term partners), plus godparents, by their title followed by their name until the neice, nephew or godchild is 18.
However one of my nephews, now in his 40s , hasn't got out of the habit so I'm still Aunty Moasty.

ElanaohElana · 02/10/2026 00:59

Just their names. We only use auntie and uncle for actual relations. Not even for godparents/very close family friends. But I know other cultures tend to use auntie/uncle as terms of love and respect much more broadly. For me though, it is a factual thing relating to familial relationship.

theprincessthepea · 02/10/2026 01:08

Depends on the friend.

My true friends, are on a first name basis.

My friends that are traditional, it’s aunty and uncle.

Anyone that is significantly older is aunty and uncle.

My friends kids call me in a first name basis. I’m happy with that.

BelleEpoque27 · 02/10/2026 01:09

Just first names. I remember being so confused discovering that I wasn't actually related to 'aunties and uncles' when I was little, and didn't want that for my children.
It feels quite old fashioned now.

Asian so always Aunty!

Same here.

mathanxiety · 02/10/2026 03:56

Whatever the friends prefer to be called.

I see aunt and uncle as referring to specific relatives, not people unrelated to my DCs.

TruffleSlinky · 02/10/2026 03:57

Just first names.

Greenfinch7 · 02/10/2026 04:05

All friends are first names, and I don't know anyone who does that differently.

Actually, I never wanted to be Aunt Name, because when I was a child, all my Aunties were mean and dreadful old harridans, so the title was tainted for me.

Topseyt123 · 02/10/2026 04:12

First names, even though I grew up in an era when it wasn't done for children to call adults by first names.

To be honest, I always found using Aunty or Uncle for people who were unrelated very odd and uncomfortable.

VashtaNerada · 02/10/2026 04:49

First names but my Asian friends’ children call me Auntie and I love it!

Eastie77Returns · 02/10/2026 04:59

West Indian background so grew up calling my parents WI friends aunt/uncle and still do so now even though I’m in my 40s.

My DC call my friends of West Indian, African and Asian origin aunt and uncle. Anyone else, just their first name.

StressedStudentPara · 02/10/2026 05:31

Best friend of over 25 years - aunt, everyone else just first name

I just turned 40 and I still don't dare drop the aunty title when talking to my aunty Margaret, she was always very insistent on her title!

Natsku · 02/10/2026 05:45

Some friends were aunty/uncle first name when my children were smaller but now its just first names for all, even their actual uncle who lives nearby so we see him regularly is just first name now. But unrelated adult women are often referred to as aunties, like the lunch staff at school are kitchen aunties, sometime men are uncles, older people are often grandmas and grandpas as that's the local culture. I first felt like a proper adult when a neighbourhood child said to another child "ask that aunty to tie your shoelace"

JackJarvisEsq · 02/10/2026 05:51

We’re in Glasgow so everyone is auntie or uncle

even in my 40s I still refer to my mums friend as my Auntie Karen
