Do British people agree with this judgement of their attitudes?

What do British people think of the following article criticising British attitudes to the Royal Family. Do they agree with it? The question to which the article responds was why people hate Sarah Ferguson but talked more generally about British behaviour. It’s from Australia.

“I’m watching The Duke and Duchess of Disaster right now on Australian TV, and angry that the true villain of the piece is not being highlighted.
Not the listless Andrew, and not Fergie, bumbling into get-rich schemes and get-popular schemes, because she didn’t fit the Edwardian straitjacket of The Firm. At least she didn’t have to walk the plank with her personal life that Princess Margaret did.

Not the late Prince Philip, Fergie-hater In Chief. I don’t expect him to have known any better, and I wouldn’t have looked to him for guidance on how to run a family to begin with.

Not the snooty judgemental dicks of Fleet Street that were the panel of clucking talking heads on the show, swooping down on every faux pas Fergie committed. Although I cannot but think that humanity would be well served by a few of those clucking royal watchers being reassigned to cover the shipping news.

No, the true villain of the piece is the people of Pomgolia (“a small country to the south of Scotland”),* who enable the entire farce, and give those clucking judgemental dicks of Fleet Street an audience. Who sit in judgement of Fergie for not being Cinderella out of central casting; who made her a laughing stock and a comic book villain just as they had with Margaret, just as they were to with Meghan; who enabled the much more damaged Diana to go on a wrecking tour, and deified her for looking the part of Cinderella. And only some rushed stage management has spared Catherine the same judgement. (Can we blame her for being Waity Katy? Especially when what she was delaying was the spotlight that would keep her being judged with daft names like that?)

The people of Pomgolia had unrealistic expectations about their Royal Family, that Fergie fell afoul of, because their popular notion of the Royal Family has become utterly muddle-headed. They want them to both be remote gods of yore, like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, and approachable humans of contemporary times, like the bike-riding Dutch royals. That’s a hard standard to live up to, even if you have the benefit of being trained for it for life, like Charles and William have. Let alone the random petty aristocrats that have married into the Royal Family.

Has Fergie done silly things? Sure. But the opprobrium was vastly inflated, because of the untenable spotlight she was put under. And as divorces go, Fergie and Andrew have been an exemplar. It’s a pity the fairy-tale obsessive public don’t credit them for that.”

ENDS

*“Pomgolia”, an Australian term used to ridicule England very infrequently, is my new “Beef-Eaters” for Westerners: an othering term, which I use to remind people that need othering. This is the only royal family now that has this strange affliction, of lèse-majesté being enforced by the subjects of the kingdom on their royal family. From the outside, it truly looks bizarre. And it’s not the norm of royalty either.

@Turophiles

"Should they worry about Antipodean indifference to roadworks on the M4"

Are you... are you implying that Australians are indifferent to roadworks on the M4??

Truly?

That is, indeed, worrying. Very worrying indeed. Should it be reported somewhere do you think?

Pallisers · 30/09/2026 23:54

I'm not British and not a royalist (and do sometimes think the british public seem to require a royal sacrifice every generation) but am highly amused at "Fergie did some silly things"

Rookie93 · 01/10/2026 00:22

Obviously I'm old but would like to add to the famous Aussie list - Evonne Goolagong, Miles Franklin, Paul Hogan, Rod Laver and Colin Friels the really really hot actor from the Water Rats tv show of the late 90's
Missing point of the thread.

Why do you keep posting this stuff! Also that article made my brain hurt.

Why are there so many threads asking "what British people think" about the royal family (presumably started by non-Brits)??
The answer is that most brits don't give two halves of a flying fuck about ANY aspect of the royal family.
It seems to be the non Brits who are keenest to milk this particular content mill (to mix a metaphor).

This OP has been responsible for a few of them.

The English tend to be the biggest Monarchists - with the exception of the Orange Order throughout the UK.

For example, I have never seen advertised nor in person any Jubilee Street Party or whatever in the Highlands. But England seems to love these?

Do you mean the Scottish Highlands? IME they are full of English people who have decamped
there so if you’ve never seen a street party advertised up there then that proves there are loads of English that don’t give a shiny shite.

This is very similar to an anti English post last week wanting to know what English people in the 90s thought about the fact that Australians didn’t think the English were cool or similar bollocks. OP got rather antsy about people saying they hadn’t thought one bit about what the Australians didn’t or didn’t think. Was that post also from you OP?

Same OP.

Bloodysquirellls · 01/10/2026 00:45

People talk about it yes and they have opinions. Because brits love small talk, and if it’s not raining we struggle for a conversation starter.

But I think you’re overestimating how much people care. There’s been some pretty big dramas of late; and yet it’s maybe a two minute convo, something you’re not thinking about before or after the convo. Just a fleeting.. ooo did you see that? Yes… sigh… well that’s just x being x, or yes, that’s surprising. Insert additional one sentence comment. Or yes… really great news.

That’s it really. We have a royal family. They are characters in a way to a melodrama part fiction, part reality, part fabricated, part true. It’s all to be taken with a combination of a pinch of salt and no smoke no fire and it is what it is. That’s it. It’s not that deep.

Oh, this is by FAR THE most pompous thread on mumsnet tonight.
thank you Op.
this is so good I couldn’t let it drift by without acknowledging it.
And you, you, @TwentytoTwelve who can write with such passion, such sanctioning, honestly believe us English people, actually have that much say in the activities of our Royal Family??? For heaven’s sakes, they are squillionaires! Therefore what we think or say has very little, if none, impact on them.
But go back to your othering and tv shows if this is how you choose to spend your one and only life. for giving such amusement with your post you deserve all the happiness you can get

covilha · 01/10/2026 01:05

Skippy rocked! Oh no just realised I am confusing the show with Dektari- all jeeps bombing about the African bush and a cross eyed. Lion

TinyBlueDent · 30/09/2026 19:57

Why is the writer blaming it on the English? Do they think the people of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have no interest in the royal family and don't consume the same media?

The people of Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland may nit see the royal family as 'theirs' to the same extent many of the English do.

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 01/10/2026 01:27

More obvious stirring and attempts at destabilising via the RF by an OP with very little history.
That’s what this British person thinks.
Try harder.

Australia are moving towards becoming a republic and good for them. What the hell good does the UK monarchy do for them? Nothing. And the next step is removing the union part from the flags, most people I know from NZ want the fern to replace their current flag. Times move on.

Should U.K. remove change Union Jack too like Australia to reflect its new identity?

Are you going to respond to the pp who found your 7 year old “article” on quora? 🤭

echt · 01/10/2026 05:52

Where to start with this semi-literate shite? For starters it isn't an article, it's some maundering post on Quora. Hard to see how @TwentytoTwelve makes this a critique of the general attitude of the British towards the RF. It's one anonymous viewpoint written years ago about one programme. That is all.

Barrel-scraping, and very rude of the OP not state their own view of the matter.

Please tell me you're not Australian, OP.

I don't give a shiny shite about the Royal Family, but on balance, I probably give even less of shiny shite about what other countries population's might wonder about my shiny shites given.

Get a life.

This sums it up perfectly.

Feduptryingusernames · 01/10/2026 18:24

The majority of British people don't give 2 hoots about the pampered, elitist, grasping, grifting, entitled RF. KC takes profit from the Duchy estates he's not entitled to. Read Norman Bakers book. Why should birthright supercede hard working law abiding working people. Grr makes me angry what the RF have got away with.

It’s only a Union Jack when it’s on a ship/boat. Who are ‘the UK’? I’m Welsh, I’m from the UK strangely enough, we have two flags in Wales, don’t really need the union one, because we’re not included. Not sure if you are being antagonistic or you are just a bit lacking in knowledge? You seem to lack a grasp of history.

And we don’t (speaking for Wales) because they are not! Hilarious about the birthright nature of the royal family and how you can ascend to the crown, but no one has to be born in Wales to be be the Prince of it… it’s massively patronising, we were bored at first and now we are angry. It’s so rude and stupid. Charles could have abolished it and should have.

Gruffudd ap Llywelyn was the last true "Prince of Wales".

Edward I & his genocidal megalomania saw to that.

Fortunately for Scots The Bruce sent Edward II "homeward, tae think again".

Edited

I need to go to that cave one day - abhorrent. I don’t expect everyone to know Welsh history, of course not (until we had devolution we weren’t allowed to teach it in our own schools!) But this whole labelling us as UK and then not… it’s so lazy and just smacks of arrogance by a bigger nation. There was a thread on here recently started by someone (not from Wales) about ‘why on earth is there this whole thing to promote the language’ and why it shouldn’t be… I didn’t even post on there because I would have got too cross and the older I get there is no point arguing with idiots.

celticnations · 03/10/2026 19:36

@Arlanymor I know.

1872 Scotland (Education) Act nearly killed Gaelic. It was never an "outdated/dead" language. It was institutionally stepped on. "The tawse"(belt) was the punishment for Scots kids caught speaking Gaelic.

My mum often told me about her English boarding school teachers chastising her for her Ulster Scots dialect.
