Do British people agree with this judgement of their attitudes?

What do British people think of the following article criticising British attitudes to the Royal Family. Do they agree with it? The question to which the article responds was why people hate Sarah Ferguson but talked more generally about British behaviour. It’s from Australia.

“I’m watching The Duke and Duchess of Disaster right now on Australian TV, and angry that the true villain of the piece is not being highlighted.
Not the listless Andrew, and not Fergie, bumbling into get-rich schemes and get-popular schemes, because she didn’t fit the Edwardian straitjacket of The Firm. At least she didn’t have to walk the plank with her personal life that Princess Margaret did.

Not the late Prince Philip, Fergie-hater In Chief. I don’t expect him to have known any better, and I wouldn’t have looked to him for guidance on how to run a family to begin with.

Not the snooty judgemental dicks of Fleet Street that were the panel of clucking talking heads on the show, swooping down on every faux pas Fergie committed. Although I cannot but think that humanity would be well served by a few of those clucking royal watchers being reassigned to cover the shipping news.

No, the true villain of the piece is the people of Pomgolia (“a small country to the south of Scotland”),* who enable the entire farce, and give those clucking judgemental dicks of Fleet Street an audience. Who sit in judgement of Fergie for not being Cinderella out of central casting; who made her a laughing stock and a comic book villain just as they had with Margaret, just as they were to with Meghan; who enabled the much more damaged Diana to go on a wrecking tour, and deified her for looking the part of Cinderella. And only some rushed stage management has spared Catherine the same judgement. (Can we blame her for being Waity Katy? Especially when what she was delaying was the spotlight that would keep her being judged with daft names like that?)

The people of Pomgolia had unrealistic expectations about their Royal Family, that Fergie fell afoul of, because their popular notion of the Royal Family has become utterly muddle-headed. They want them to both be remote gods of yore, like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, and approachable humans of contemporary times, like the bike-riding Dutch royals. That’s a hard standard to live up to, even if you have the benefit of being trained for it for life, like Charles and William have. Let alone the random petty aristocrats that have married into the Royal Family.

Has Fergie done silly things? Sure. But the opprobrium was vastly inflated, because of the untenable spotlight she was put under. And as divorces go, Fergie and Andrew have been an exemplar. It’s a pity the fairy-tale obsessive public don’t credit them for that.”

ENDS

*“Pomgolia”, an Australian term used to ridicule England very infrequently, is my new “Beef-Eaters” for Westerners: an othering term, which I use to remind people that need othering. This is the only royal family now that has this strange affliction, of lèse-majesté being enforced by the subjects of the kingdom on their royal family. From the outside, it truly looks bizarre. And it’s not the norm of royalty either.

Why is the writer blaming it on the English? Do they think the people of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have no interest in the royal family and don't consume the same media?

MyThreeWords · 30/09/2026 20:01

Why are there so many threads asking "what British people think" about the royal family (presumably started by non-Brits)??
The answer is that most brits don't give two halves of a flying fuck about ANY aspect of the royal family.
It seems to be the non Brits who are keenest to milk this particular content mill (to mix a metaphor).

Lugol · 30/09/2026 20:09

Wow the writer of that piece of crap is so jealous of the Royal family (and Brits!)

Yes but what do the Canadians think?

Hatty65 · 30/09/2026 20:17

'The British People'. All 70 odd million of us, clearly are one unified lump who all think the same.

I'm with the pp who said most people are neutral and disinterested in the Royal Family. The media write click bait shit about all sorts of stories.

But I'm pretty sure we are unified in not giving a shit what some random Australian thinks about our attitudes towards anything.

chirrupybird · 30/09/2026 20:18

I didn't care very much what Andrew and Fergie did they were well away from the line of succession by then, and I didn't read all the tittle tattle. I thought it rather nice that they more or less got back together after all the drama, until Epstein obviously.

IzzyLeng · 30/09/2026 20:21

This is very similar to an anti English post last week wanting to know what English people in the 90s thought about the fact that Australians didn’t think the English were cool or similar bollocks. OP got rather antsy about people saying they hadn’t thought one bit about what the Australians didn’t or didn’t think. Was that post also from you OP?

Turophiles · 30/09/2026 20:21

What on earth is with this weird influx of threads asking Brits whether they lie awake at night worrying about what Australians think of Cool Britannia or the RF?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 30/09/2026 20:26

Sounds to me like the writer of that piece has a massive chip on his/her shoulder about the UK and has written a school project masquerading as journalism.

But I'm pretty sure we are unified in not giving a shit what some random Australian thinks about our attitudes towards anything.

Thanks, saved me the trouble of saying the same.

DollopOfFun · 30/09/2026 20:32

I don't give a shiny shite about the Royal Family, but on balance, I probably give even less of shiny shite about what other countries population's might wonder about my shiny shites given.

Get a life.

OriginalSkang · 30/09/2026 20:34

Why do you keep posting about what British people think about Australia?

MrsPapillon · 30/09/2026 20:36

This English person thinks that the article is very poorly written. The author could do with an English lesson or two, focusing on sentence structure.

celticnations · 30/09/2026 20:40

The English tend to be the biggest Monarchists - with the exception of the Orange Order throughout the UK.

For example, I have never seen advertised nor in person any Jubilee Street Party or whatever in the Highlands. But England seems to love these?

Ijwwm · 30/09/2026 20:40

This English person thinks your post is a load of tosh.

Aye it's a strange line to take
A pp said we gave you the Royal Family
You gave us crap daytime soaps.
I thought that was an excellent summary.

Grumblegrumblegrumble · 30/09/2026 20:42

Are you the same poster asking what British people thought Australias thought about the UK in the 1990s the other night? Still working on your essay?

Dearg · 30/09/2026 20:42

Well I am Scottish, and I think Fergie and Andrew deserve every bit of opprobrium they attract.

I don’t think the English are any harder on them than the rest of the Uk.

celticnations · 30/09/2026 20:43

PS British is not a nation. It's just a collective name.

The English, Scots, Irish & Welsh are nations. Britain/British is not.

Personally, I love the Aussies & their devil-may-care attitudes.

It’s fair to say that the royals constitute a long running crap daytime soap.

Oh yes indeed.
Do you remember Soap with questions
Will this happen with such and such etc
At the end of show iirc 70s American programme.

cartagenagina · 30/09/2026 20:50

Are you the same poster who has other threads obsessed with what British and Australian people think of each other?

Or are there two people with this rather unusual obsession?

vodkaredbullgirl · 30/09/2026 20:52

Again 🙄

Some maybe. But I’m in my 50s, lived in different places in England and have never seen a street party, or even heard of anyone going to one. I don’t know anyone who is a royalist, or even has a passing interest in them really.

In fairness to Australians I assume most of them don't care about what the British/English think either. And no more should they. It feels very terminally online to be constantly fretting about what another country is saying about what you are saying about their country. Or one of those girls in year six/seven who was constantly trying to ask different classmates what they thought about other classmates so they could tell the second group.

Tiresome and a bit odd

JontyGentooey · 30/09/2026 21:01

99% of British people tolerate the Royal family because they generate a huge income for the nation and we are fucking broke.

Pop that in your essay.
