Do British people agree with this judgement of their attitudes?

What do British people think of the following article criticising British attitudes to the Royal Family. Do they agree with it? The question to which the article responds was why people hate Sarah Ferguson but talked more generally about British behaviour. It’s from Australia.

“I’m watching The Duke and Duchess of Disaster right now on Australian TV, and angry that the true villain of the piece is not being highlighted.
Not the listless Andrew, and not Fergie, bumbling into get-rich schemes and get-popular schemes, because she didn’t fit the Edwardian straitjacket of The Firm. At least she didn’t have to walk the plank with her personal life that Princess Margaret did.

Not the late Prince Philip, Fergie-hater In Chief. I don’t expect him to have known any better, and I wouldn’t have looked to him for guidance on how to run a family to begin with.

Not the snooty judgemental dicks of Fleet Street that were the panel of clucking talking heads on the show, swooping down on every faux pas Fergie committed. Although I cannot but think that humanity would be well served by a few of those clucking royal watchers being reassigned to cover the shipping news.

No, the true villain of the piece is the people of Pomgolia (“a small country to the south of Scotland”),* who enable the entire farce, and give those clucking judgemental dicks of Fleet Street an audience. Who sit in judgement of Fergie for not being Cinderella out of central casting; who made her a laughing stock and a comic book villain just as they had with Margaret, just as they were to with Meghan; who enabled the much more damaged Diana to go on a wrecking tour, and deified her for looking the part of Cinderella. And only some rushed stage management has spared Catherine the same judgement. (Can we blame her for being Waity Katy? Especially when what she was delaying was the spotlight that would keep her being judged with daft names like that?)

The people of Pomgolia had unrealistic expectations about their Royal Family, that Fergie fell afoul of, because their popular notion of the Royal Family has become utterly muddle-headed. They want them to both be remote gods of yore, like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, and approachable humans of contemporary times, like the bike-riding Dutch royals. That’s a hard standard to live up to, even if you have the benefit of being trained for it for life, like Charles and William have. Let alone the random petty aristocrats that have married into the Royal Family.

Has Fergie done silly things? Sure. But the opprobrium was vastly inflated, because of the untenable spotlight she was put under. And as divorces go, Fergie and Andrew have been an exemplar. It’s a pity the fairy-tale obsessive public don’t credit them for that.”

ENDS

*“Pomgolia”, an Australian term used to ridicule England very infrequently, is my new “Beef-Eaters” for Westerners: an othering term, which I use to remind people that need othering. This is the only royal family now that has this strange affliction, of lèse-majesté being enforced by the subjects of the kingdom on their royal family. From the outside, it truly looks bizarre. And it’s not the norm of royalty either.

Tabloid news does not represent what everyone thought, you do know that right? It was gossip written to sell papers. Have you actually spoken to anyone who was there at the time?

Tryagain26 · 30/09/2026 21:03

Most British people don't give the royal family a second thought

bannabead · 30/09/2026 21:07

Lugol · 30/09/2026 20:09

Wow the writer of that piece of crap is so jealous of the Royal family (and Brits!)

🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s fair to say that the royals constitute a long running crap daytime soap.

Yes, do you think the same people who follow them watch eastenders

cityliving99 · 30/09/2026 21:11

Ask the average Brit to name 5 famous Australians, without thinking. Rest my case.
Who gives a flying fudge what the Aussies think?

Arlanymor · 30/09/2026 21:12

I’m Welsh - I don’t speak for all Welsh people - I find the monarchy an embarrassment and the fact that there is the ‘of Wales’ thing patronising and subjugating in the extreme. Always have, always will. I don’t speak for all Welsh people as I said.

Persephonia1966 · 30/09/2026 21:13

On a more serious note, while I don't like the amount of attention the media etc give the Royal Family... The real villain in that particular story IS in fact Prince Andrew. So strongly disagree with the writer in that regard.

I don't know. I kind of feel cheapening the actions of a man who happily hung out with a convicted child sex trafficker and "allegedly" had sex with a trafficked exploited teenager in order to make a pickier point about people that annoy you is a bit... Hmmmm. You could write an article about how annoying English people are without doing that.

Sunbringer · 30/09/2026 21:22

I used to work at the red tops and can tell you that an awful lot of the people reading Royal articles aren’t even from England.

Couldn’t tell you about what was going on in the Fergie days because I wasn’t born yet.

Agreed. The bad guy is definitely the sexual predator…

I have never met anybody who gives a sh*t about the royal family. I am about as English-British as you can get (can trace my family back to the 1390s, etc) yet they mean nothing to me. They are a bunch of ugly, vulgar monsters. They make my skin crawl.

To me, Britain means Chaucer, Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, Jane Austen, Blake, Dickens, George Eliot, Charles Darwin, Virginia Woolf etc. It means Oxford and Cambridge University and Durham Cathedral. Even Monty Python and P G Wodehouse and David Bowie mean more to me than the royals. Above all, Britain is its writers. Most of my favourite writers, from Iris Murdoch and Aldous Huxley to Wilfred Owen and Ted Hughes, are British, and I love the way British literature is woven into the landscape. To me, the Yorkshire moors mean the Brontes and the Lake District means Wordsworth. Even a church service in a parish church makes me think of T S Eliot rather than religion.

A snorting, vulgar gargoyle like Fergie, or an ignorant little yob like Harry, mean nothing.

This is definitely written by Femusia on the other thread. There can’t be two people writing such obscure ridiculous questions about British attitudes to Australians

Agree.
It feels like there has to be an ulterior motive but what? A clumsy attempt to stir up anti-Australian hatred amongst the British? An attempt to dispirit the English by breaking their long held belief the Australians thought they were cool? An attempt to train AI to do one really specific type of rage baiting?

CypressGrove · 30/09/2026 21:51

Where is this 'article' even from? Most Australians think about the royal family as often as the royal family think about them (ie never).

We should all start threads.

What do Brits think of Australian attitudes to custard creams? Do Brits lie awake at night worrying that Australians aren’t suffiently enthused about Prince Michael of Kent? Should they worry about Antipodean indifference to roadworks on the M4?

I can give you

  • Kylie
  • Kylie’s sister
  • Jason Donovan
  • Jason Donovan’s Dad
  • Natalie Imbruglia
  • Toni Collette
  • Shane Warne (or Ward. I get them mixed up but whichever one wasn’t on X Factor)
  • Guy Pearce
  • Dame Edna
  • Steve Irwin
  • Germaine Greer

I’m starting to struggle after that.

frenchnoodle · 30/09/2026 22:29

Im pretty sure most Brit kids from the 90's into the 2000's consumed a lot of Australian media; Round the twist, neighbours, spellbinders, home and away, the CITV presenters who were Australian like Tristan Bancks. Backyard science, the curiousity show, and whatever that show was where an Irish girl finds a portal in her school which transports her to Australia.

That is without mentioning a certain BBC paedophile entertainer.

All useful when learning English.🙂

Arlanymor · 30/09/2026 22:34

Australia are moving towards becoming a republic and good for them. What the hell good does the UK monarchy do for them? Nothing. And the next step is removing the union part from the flags, most people I know from NZ want the fern to replace their current flag. Times move on.

@MrsPapillon you missed the most annoying one.

I imagine it's her latest university essay. Makes a change from "How does this work...." and inane questions about careers in law & first class degrees. I think they're currently sitting a module on "British" as though it's a "thing"

The writer of that crap article needs to get a life and stop obsessing about us. They sound dim and xenophobic. Xenophobes always seem to be dim.

gishgalloping · 30/09/2026 23:06

On googling, the term "pomgolia" is a New Zealand one. I'm Australian and have never heard it before. And your "article" is this quora post from seven years ago: www.quora.com/Why-were-so-many-people-angry-at-Fergie

OP, will you stop starting these ridiculous threads? No one in Britain spends their time wistfully pondering their feelings about Australia, just as no one in Australia does about Britain. All you are doing is encouraging bad feeling.

Julynian · 30/09/2026 23:18

Having spent time in Australia, I can tell you that Australia is far more obsessed with the royal family and talking about the royal family than anyone in the UK! Honestly, it’s obsessive, magazine front pages, podcasts, TV programmes, all the time in Australia!

PremierInnShafter · 30/09/2026 23:30

TLDR but everyone's got something to say about England & the English.

What are they so obsessed with us?
Tosses hair

I had a loud, obnoxious Aussie with hideous teeth have a massive rant at me about how stupid the Brits were to send convicts to beautiful sunny Australia in the 18th century.
Perhaps he thought I'd pound my fists in frustration and rue the shortsightedness of my ancestors while acknowledging his superiority for living somewhere sunnier? I dunno but his ongoing desperation to be better than me just because of my nationality was weird.

I've also had a Malaysian absolutely fanboy over me being English. We have a certain confidence that you can't fake apparently. I hope I didn't disappoint him.
