How do you pass the time on flights?

Apart from the usual reading, watching movies /downloaded tv programmes/ puzzles in book or on phone?
i still like travel books even tho there’s more info online, so often do some trip planning on the way out.
on the way back I often use the time to plan for some upcoming event or project.
So enough to keep me entertained in the above but just wondering if there’s something different I could be doing? No small DC to look after.

My husband bought a carry case for the Nintendo switch and took that on holiday. I just read my kindle.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 02/10/2026 19:50

I read, knit, eat, or end up chatting to the person sat next to me (I grew up in a northern village where it was perfectly normal to chat to all and sundry, and it hasn't worn off). Last time, I was sat with a chap who worked on oil rigs, and as I'd never met anyone who did that before, I had a lot of questions for him!

Leo800 · 02/10/2026 19:53

Listen to downloaded episodes of Desert Island Discs, read, listen to music or watch a film. Definitely not chatting with strangers. I like to relax.

KitsyWitsy · 03/10/2026 09:40

I hate it when people try and talk to me. Had a very chatty girl witter on at me all the way from ibiza to Bradford. Not fun. Fortunately most people are considerate.

Read, get bored and fidgety, drink, remember that I really should get compression socks for my next flight or actually get out of my seat and walk around a bit. Annoy DH when I am bored. Start to sort out photos on my phone but get bored of it after 2 minutes. Sometimes watch a film.

Elbowpatch · 03/10/2026 09:46

Sleep.

Short haul, mid haul, long haul, it doesn’t matter. I generally only wake at meal times.

PensionMention · 03/10/2026 09:48

I’m good at napping, always have been. At work I used to roll out a sleeping bag and lock my office door and nap on the floor. So if it’s a long flight I just tend to nap.

Justploddingonandon · 03/10/2026 09:57

I rarely get time to watch a whole film so do that and then read or try to sleep. Curious about all of you who knit as didn’t think knitting needles were allowed.

mondaytosunday · 03/10/2026 09:58

I always bring my crochet on flights but most of the time don’t do it - if on a budget airline once I’ve squeezed my hand luggage away the thought of getting it out again is too much. I generally just watch a movie or stare out the window or watch the flight attendants (who are fascinating).

KassandraOfSparta · 03/10/2026 09:59

Knit. Listen to podcasts. Watch the inflight entertainment.

I usually take wooden/bamboo circular needles, the actually pointy bit is no bigger than a pencil.

I like to recline my chair just after the food is served and kick the seat in front.

😆

Knitting needles are generally allowed but do check with your airline and airport.

I get drowsy in a plane so I snooze the whole way.

dizzydizzydizzy · 03/10/2026 10:09

Long haul day flight - watch films, chat to other people. Long haul night flight - stand in the galley and get chocolate from the crew

So envious! In economy? I can only sleep in Business but not willing to pay for it.

Sleep. I'm down before cruising altitude and only wake up to land. Arrive fresh as a daisy. Apart from turbulence in which case I'm trying to keep my bowels on the inside.

Once flew back from Tokyo and the bloke in the middle seat was asleep before we took off and slept all the way to London. The woman in the window seat arranged that she'd tell me when she wanted the loo, I'd get up and she'd climb over him. He never moved the whole time.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 03/10/2026 10:14

Nobody's put actually talk to and make conversation with the person next to you Shock horror

God. No. Please no.

OMGitsnotgood · 29/09/2026 18:02

@PrincessHoneysuckleif I did that I would fall asleep with my mouth open and snore and dribble 😂

So what?

I take a sleeping pill and am unconscious on long haul flights

You can have some interesting conversations if the vibe is right and it makes the time go quicker.
Living in Zombie land staring at your screen all the time is bad for you and very antisocial.

Hard no

CeffylCoch · 03/10/2026 10:43

Look out of the window, talk and eat. I do take a book but can’t concentrate to read on a plane for some reason

KitsyWitsy · 03/10/2026 10:53

I wish I could sleep on flights. I don't take anything to make me sleep just in case something happens and I'm half-asleep when I need my wits about me.

Giggorata · 03/10/2026 11:01

Concentrate on holding the plane up by sheer willpower.
Praying that nothing goes wrong.
Pretending very hard that I am actually on a coach on the ground.
Drinking.
Trying to watch the film.

(Sorry, I am a very bad flyer)

Rocknrollstar · 03/10/2026 11:02

DD watches movies and series she has downloaded. I read and listen to opera. On a night flight I put on an audio book and sleep.

Garfieldloveslasagnepie · 03/10/2026 11:05

I always sleep as soon as we take off. I always book early flights so I’ve never slept the night before.
