Ironing-do you do it?

I was reading a thread earlier where a number of posters were saying they don’t iron anything (this is a recurring theme on mn) and this got me thinking…

For those that don’t iron, how do you achieve creaseless clothes?

Those that do iron, do you also do bedding, tea towels etc?

I iron as little as possible but definitely can’t get away with not-currently have linen trousers, cotton mix tops & a very creased t shirt in ironing pile.

I haven’t ironed in years. Luckily I have a DH who irons watching the telly. Love nicely ironed clothes.

Parker231 · 25/09/2026 17:21

Luckily DH didn’t wear shirts for work nor DC’s for school. Anything which needed ironing, the cleaner did. Now everything goes in the tumble dryer and hung up straight away.

My washing seems to come out creased from the dryer regardless of what setting I use, even when I use the non iron mode it’s creased and just goes round more often being creased! Plus it’s got secret settings on an app that I CBA to deal with.
I’m not a smart appliance person.

It's not about being smart - you figured out how to get online and post on here, you can def read up on the settings in your dryer's manual - search the make and model online.

Or, set an alarm and stop the dryer earlier than the programmed setting. I did this and it's been great for protecting my bedding!

I try to avoid clothes that need ironing so I can keep it to a minimum. I have no idea how people manage to iron anything completely smooth, I just can't do it.

Motheranddaughter · 25/09/2026 17:29

I iron almost everything , often send it out tbf

Fondmemories · 25/09/2026 17:31

I iron pillowcases and T towels ,
linen and things like trousers for DH and occasionally shirts. The pile grows and I do it every few weeks.

Fortuity · 25/09/2026 17:35

I never iron. I don't have linen clothes, everything else I hang up. DH gets his shirts washed and ironed by a laundry service, it's quite cheap and cheerful.

Creaseless clothes is not something I've ever wanted to achieve.
I don't own anything that would need ironed, I don't look at other people's clothes and am not interested if the fabric on someone has wrinkles.

People who iron always say on these threads that they 'can tell' if a piece of fabric hasn't been ironed like that's a gotcha? 😆

If anyone claims to go around detecting whether other people's clothes have been ironed, I just think they must lead incredibly dull lives.

RaraRachael · 25/09/2026 17:40

I iron most stuff apart from underwear and towels.
Bedding I only do duvet cover and pillowcases, not fitted sheets.

Mymanyellow · 25/09/2026 17:43

I only iron what I have to. T shirts mainly. No school shirts now so thats a relief. I do t mind it as long as I have enough hangers and enough space in which to hang things once they’re ironed.

thelastcakeismine · 25/09/2026 17:45

Back in the day when all 3 dc’s & dh wore shirts, I did send the ironing out.

I had some gorgeous pure cotton bedding a few years ago which needed a good iron-tumble drying didn’t work neither did the creases fall out after being on the bed so I replaced it. My current bedding sets must be a lower thread count as the creases fall out after a few days.

I did not get the ironing gene (I think I prefer that I got the cookery one instead!), but fortunately, my work clothes do not need ironing. My home clothes tend to feature wool/cotton jumpers, skinny jeans or skirts of materials that do not need ironing.

Batties · 25/09/2026 17:48

People who actually iron towels have got way too much time on their hands.

PuppyMonkey · 25/09/2026 17:49

I don’t and fortunately I don’t have the gene that makes me bothered about things that look a bit creased - especially as the creases often drop out when you wear stuff.

Om83 · 25/09/2026 17:52

I used to only iron when really needed, on demand as and when I wanted to wear something I thought needed it.

I think a lot of fabrics with polyester in you can get away with not ironing, but this year I have found a bit more time in my hands and annoyed that my teens are looking more crumpled so now separate my clean washing pile into what needs ironing- I tend to iron all the T-shirts, (only 1 side but def more presentable!) but this may reduce over the winter again when they can be hidden under jumpers!!

Cetera · 25/09/2026 17:52

I stopped ironing around the pandemic in 2020. After that my husband’s clothing policy at work changed and he stopped wearing formal work shirts/trousers. I started working from home full time. We dont really own anything that needs major ironing these days, my DD’s school uniform is the iron free stuff. I shake and hang stuff when it’s drying which helps with creases. Never ironed sheets or tea towels. Not even sure where the iron is these days 😆

mit123 · 25/09/2026 17:53

I iron twice a week but don’t do bedding or tea towels

ThatLoudCat · 25/09/2026 17:55

No. I don't care about a few creases in my t-shirts.

reluctantbrit · 25/09/2026 17:59

Yes because I find that cotton T-shirts and shirts do look better when ironed.

I have some tops which are ok without it but the majority is ironed. DH's T-shirts are all ironed. He only wears shirts for conferences and we then drop them at the dry cleaner unless he has a quick turnaround and then they are washed and he irons them.

I don't have the space or time to hang up my washing carefully and I prefer a high speed spin to get the items as dry out of the machine as possible, especially in bad weather if I have to dry them indoors.
I also hate the idea of taking things out of the dryer to let them then dry over the banister or on hangers - grrr, I would hate the mess all over the house.

I don't do pure linen, regardless how expensive it is or well ironed there is nothing attractive of a creased pair of trousers or top. A mix of linen and cotton is better.

No to tea towels or bedding.

1stWorldProblems · 25/09/2026 18:04

Clothing - only for weddings, funerals & Flora Day. Plus pressing seams when sewing & (luckily the kids have now lost interest) Hamma Beads.

My iron is so old it says Product of West Germany on it!

I grew up listening to my mum complaining about the ironing on a weekly basis so when I left home I gave up. I only buy clothes that don't need ironing - do no linen or pure cotton. I have been known to put stuff back in shops because they look like they'll need ironing. Life is too short.

Same with bedding and underwear - just, why?! Confused

Savvysix1984 · 25/09/2026 18:05

Very rarely. Dc school shirts and a pair of linen trousers that I have. All the rest of my clothes just don’t need ironed. If they did I would.
