Ironing-do you do it?

I was reading a thread earlier where a number of posters were saying they don’t iron anything (this is a recurring theme on mn) and this got me thinking…

For those that don’t iron, how do you achieve creaseless clothes?

Those that do iron, do you also do bedding, tea towels etc?

I iron as little as possible but definitely can’t get away with not-currently have linen trousers, cotton mix tops & a very creased t shirt in ironing pile.

This is pretty much my view as well.

I have an iron, replaced during early covid when I was doing some ironing (boredom must have overcome me). I had popped upstairs to get some coat hangers and came back down (only a minute or two) to flames coming out of the iron.
I probably haven't used the new iron more than a handful of times in 6+ years.

Edit: I also don't tumble dry (or only a few loads a year). Washing is dried on a clothes horse and sheets go over the tie bar, both in the conservatory year round.
I do shake well and hang neatly, but things are still a bit creased. In the main creases drop out in wear.

Edited

OMG, iron setting alight is a reason not to do it if ever I heard one!

Charalam · 25/09/2026 16:52

I can’t not iron. I hate creased clothes.
Bedding, tea towels etc just get folded and put away.
Rarely iron curtains unless they are a crumpled mess.

I know!
There was nothing wrong with the cord, they were coming out of the body of the iron itself.
Good reason never to leave a switched on iron unattended.

I suspect some people don't know how to use their dryer settings. The amount of online reviews criticising bedding for being super creased after washing - that's your fault! 🤣 - you just needed the easy iron option (aka low heat).

Take clothes out before they are fully dry and finish off drying by hanging up somewhere - no creases.

There is never a reason to even wash jeans, never mind iron them haha (jokes).

My washing seems to come out creased from the dryer regardless of what setting I use, even when I use the non iron mode it’s creased and just goes round more often being creased! Plus it’s got secret settings on an app that I CBA to deal with.
I’m not a smart appliance person.

CherryKerry · 25/09/2026 16:54

I wfh so don't have to worry about being smart woth blouses etc.

I live in jeans and t shirt/jumper.

DH wears scrubs for work and jeans/jumper at home.

I wouldn't buy linen.

LemonVerbenaGeranium · 25/09/2026 16:54

I iron most things in our three person household including work and school shirts and including pjs and tea towels (but not bedding). It takes me 30 mins on a Sunday afternoon so not a big deal. I try to line dry where at all possible, so most things do look better for ironing or can then be put away more neatly. I don’t love it, but it’s not a big hassle and I wouldn’t want unironed clothes so that’s where we are.

desperatemum1234 · 25/09/2026 16:55

Nope, haven’t done it in about 25 years. Life is too short. Especially with kids, zero time.
I just buy things that don’t need ironing or I live with a few creases.

Orchid90 · 25/09/2026 16:55

Well I have the dryer so most of the time they aren’t that creased.
I do iron them if they are bad but it’s ad hoc .
if I have a few that are particularly bad I might put them back in the dryer with some ice cubes .

HRTQueen · 25/09/2026 16:57

I m often wonder this how people never iron but look smart still

I have tried putting less in the wash, hanging clothes up as soon as the wash has finished and they still look creased

I iron most on my clothes having a drying I know helps with some cloths but not everything

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 25/09/2026 16:58

Nope, never picked up an iron in my life and I’m 37.

I don’t wear clothes that need ironing and neither does DH.

thelastcakeismine · 25/09/2026 16:59

Good cross section of ironers & non ironers here-a flaming iron is the best reason not to bother!

My 83yr old Mum had only just stopped ironing df’s boxers (makes him do them now!) & bedding.

I don’t normally. However i bought a shirt from M&S recently that looks awful unironed. So there you go. One shirt.

Naurrr · 25/09/2026 17:01

Creaseless clothes is not something I've ever wanted to achieve.
I don't own anything that would need ironed, I don't look at other people's clothes and am not interested if the fabric on someone has wrinkles.

People who iron always say on these threads that they 'can tell' if a piece of fabric hasn't been ironed like that's a gotcha? 😆

Floisme · 25/09/2026 17:02

Ironer here. My own clothes because they look better. No bedding or tea towels.

BotterMon · 25/09/2026 17:05

Nope never iron. Used to years ago when I was suited and booted but then discovered an ironing service. Revelation.

Nowadays nothing is ironed. Hung up to dry if creases and smoothed out. Folding things properly removes necessity to iron; ironed jeans are just naff and look totally ridiculous.
If using dryer take out as soon as it finishes and fold whilst warm.

Besides, surely you can’t tell either way unless you go around asking random strangers whether they’ve ironed that morning? 😂

WearingBeautifulShoes · 25/09/2026 16:36

No, or at least only extremely rarely, for special occasions. I don't really care about having creaseless clothes.

This.

RitaIncognita · 25/09/2026 17:06

I seldom iron. I do have a travel steamer, though, for a quick once over if something does come out of the dryer with a wrinkle or two.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 25/09/2026 17:06

I don't iron because I choose iron-free clothes. But we have a steamer and I use that occasionally.

A steamer is incredibly easy to use compared to an iron, you can just do it on the hanger.

QueenStevie · 25/09/2026 17:06

I iron but not much anymore. Used to iron everything. DH irons his work shirts. I iron things as and when they need it. I have recently started hanging stuff in the wardrobe and then deciding when I want to put it on if it needs an iron rather than having stuff gathering dust in a pile and not knowing what is languishing at the bottom of the basket.

My mum does not iron clothes or bedding or towels. At all. Ever. As in she does not own an ironing board. The only thing that causes ber difficulty is new curtains which she brings to my house on the rare occasion.

Lizzieregina · 25/09/2026 17:08

Only in the summer as my summer clothes tend to wrinkle easily, cotton/linen.

iron never makes an appearance from September-May unless there’s an “occasion”.

my sisters were horrified to learn I don’t iron sheets and pillowcases!

All tea towels, sheets etc go in the dryer and don’t look too bad.

CortieTat · 25/09/2026 17:09

I iron my clothes, scarves and tea towels. That includes things like cotton tops, ironing prolongs their useful life. I like ironing, I don’t do it everyday but if I do I usually stand behind the ironing board and watch something.

junebirthdaygirl · 25/09/2026 17:16

After l wash my clothes, l hang them out side or on a clothes horse. Then for the last 15 mins l put them in the dryer and they come out with no wrinkles. Ready to wear. If something gets a big crumpled l just pop it in the dryer while l am in the shower and its ready to go.
But l never wear a blouse/ shirt as l think l will need to iron it and couldn't be bothered. I do have an iron which comes out now and then but try to live an iron free life! Grew up in a large family where l could be ironing for 3 hours when it was my turn. Turned me off for life

ShanghaiDiva · 25/09/2026 17:16

I iron clothes, bedding etc. as I hate the crumpled look. Ds is also an ironed, but dd is less bothered. I find the process quite relaxing and watch tv t the same time.

MyGlassMenagerie · 25/09/2026 17:19

I’ve never ironed in my life. DH doesn’t mind doing it but is time poor, so we generally send it out to a company to do it for us.
