Ironing-do you do it?

I was reading a thread earlier where a number of posters were saying they don’t iron anything (this is a recurring theme on mn) and this got me thinking…

For those that don’t iron, how do you achieve creaseless clothes?

Those that do iron, do you also do bedding, tea towels etc?

I iron as little as possible but definitely can’t get away with not-currently have linen trousers, cotton mix tops & a very creased t shirt in ironing pile.

No, or at least only extremely rarely, for special occasions. I don't really care about having creaseless clothes.

WearingBeautifulShoes · 25/09/2026 16:37

I've never ironed bedding or a tea towel in my life.

SeptemberRains · 25/09/2026 16:38

Yes - T-shirts, shirts, dresses, skirts, jeans.
All my kids iron too!

Yes, both my OH and I share the ironing.
Clothes, bedding, towels, tea towels etc.
Everything sits in the cupboards & hangs better when ironed.

Smallpoxy · 25/09/2026 16:38

I don't iron. Only a few dresses - think 4 times a year.

DHs shirts are done by a local Laundry & Ironing Service.

TheChosenTwo · 25/09/2026 16:40

On a very rare occasion. Maybe twice a year.
I don’t buy linen because even when it’s ironed it looks a mess again within 10 minutes of putting it back on.
i hang my stuff out to dry carefully so it has minimal creases. Shirts with nice decorative collars get a once over with their hair straighteners (on the collar!), by the time they’re tucked in they look fine.
Basically I tend to lean towards buying things that don’t need much faffing with, I really cba. I do have the time but I’m not spending it ironing.

RampantIvy · 25/09/2026 16:40

It's a badge of honour on MN to not iron.

I do iron, but not much. I have some clothes that really benefit from being ironed and as I watch TV while doing the ironing it isn't an onerous task at all. I am just about to do some now.

runnerducky · 25/09/2026 16:40

No, DH doesn’t wear shirts, I don’t wear linen stuff or anything that creases, if the kids’ clothes are clean then we are winning. The odd stuff that is creased enough to bother me just gets the Lenor crease release treatment.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/09/2026 16:40

I do in summer, since nearly all my summer things are cotton, or linen, or a mix, and they do need ironing. However putting them on hangers to dry, and smoothing them carefully does reduce the necessity.

I use the tumble dryer only rarely now - for emergencies or anything needed in a hurry.
Hardly any of my colder weather things need ironing.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 25/09/2026 16:40

No haven’t ironed for around 30 years. Do not buy anything that remotely looks like it will crease. Everything is given a good shake and hung up to dry.
i did, when we first started to live together irons absolutely everything - lasted about 8 months before I realised life is too short.

troppibambini6 · 25/09/2026 16:40

Yep I iron. I do pretty much everything not tea towels though I draw the line there!

5289843DM · 25/09/2026 16:41

I only iron if something needs it- which is rarely.

I hang things on a hanger from the washing machine and find very few things are crumpled to the point of needing ironing.

When my mum was married in the 1970's, dad was a mechanic. Mum even ironed his work coveralls and underwear as she thought it was the done thing! Even dad had to tell her to stop.

HerissonCache · 25/09/2026 16:42

I only rarely do it. But I do pay someone to. Hate rumpled clothes and worth every penny.

AdeleRochester · 25/09/2026 16:42

I iron yes.

I have known quite a few people IRL who have said “I don’t iron, no one can tell”, and I nod politely while thinking “we can all tell”. 😆

Mum2Fergus · 25/09/2026 16:42

Haven’t owned and iron for over 10 years. I tend to hang up shirts/T-shirts on hangers while damp.

Weeellokthen · 25/09/2026 16:42

No, thats dps job 😃

mondaytosunday · 25/09/2026 16:43

Nope. I don’t buy clothes that need ironing.

hellospring26 · 25/09/2026 16:43

Nope. I don’t tumble dry and shake / hang / fold. My mum irons knickers.

HRHCurmudgeon · 25/09/2026 16:43

I iron most clothes. Jeans, sweatshirts, t-shirts, trousers, dresses, shirts and blouses. Not gym wear. Also pillowcases and napkins.

I wouldn’t leave the house in unironed clothes (apart from gym wear).

Mycatiscraycray · 25/09/2026 16:43

I binned off ironing years ago. Never ironed sheets, tea towels or any other pointless things to iron. If one of us needs a shirt to look nice for an occasion the bloke in the dry cleaners presses it for me.

Same and my laundry is my pride and joy.

Gobbledegoo · 25/09/2026 16:47

I didn't do much ironing when DCs were at home and worked FT. Retired now and love ironed bedding and nightwear. Don't do towels/tea towels, underwear. I do outer clothing that looks better ironed.

This is pretty much my view as well.

I have an iron, replaced during early covid when I was doing some ironing (boredom must have overcome me). I had popped upstairs to get some coat hangers and came back down (only a minute or two) to flames coming out of the iron.
I probably haven't used the new iron more than a handful of times in 6+ years.

Edit: I also don't tumble dry (or only a few loads a year). Washing is dried on a clothes horse and sheets go over the tie bar, both in the conservatory year round.
I do shake well and hang neatly, but things are still a bit creased. In the main creases drop out in wear.

I suspect some people don't know how to use their dryer settings. The amount of online reviews criticising bedding for being super creased after washing - that's your fault! 🤣 - you just needed the easy iron option (aka low heat).

Take clothes out before they are fully dry and finish off drying by hanging up somewhere - no creases.

There is never a reason to even wash jeans, never mind iron them haha (jokes).

NooNakedJacuzziness · 25/09/2026 16:50

I do - especially work clothes. Also do tea towels - they fit in the drawer better when they’re flat!
