If you could time travel to one event or place for an hour, where do you go?

I think I’d go back to watch the Christmas nativity at my primary school in the seventies, to see all the fashions and my classmates

I’d go back to 1914 and put Gavrilo Princip out of action.

Christmas day 1980 when my parents and grandmother and brother were all still alive.

Id love to meet my grandfather. He died before he was born.
He was a lifeboatman. Id love to tell him, in 2026, that the bast majority still respect them and any criticism of them just drives up support.

He saved smugglers and (minor) royalty and everyone inbetween. His colleagues were from all walks of life. But they just wanted to save any life.

Stand with my father watching the greatest aircraft ever built, the Graf Zeppelin fly over London

If I’m allowed to speak to myself I’d go back to 2012 and give my self some key career advice.

No shouts for the building of the pyramids yet. I’d like to see how that was done, though again suspect awful slavery was involved so maybe not so pleasant

Back to the moment I first met the man I can't stop thinking about.

Knock out the signalling on t he railway between Bath and Bradford on Avon so the railway was closed all day on a Saturday in 1999 so I never get to meet my ex wife

The beheading of Anne Boleyn!

My grandparents house in the 90s. Still the most comforting place I've ever been. Tv and cousins and ribena and the sound of their carriage clock ticking.

To be in the audience when Elvis did the 68 Comeback special

I'd love to go back and see my nan again, but actually I'd go back to the cruxifiction of Christ. See what's really going on, was he really the son of God, etc?

I thought this initially but a/ I don't think I would want to watch someone being tortured to death and b/you wouldn't know from an hour of that if he was the son of God one way or another. You'd need to be positioned by the tomb as he came out, or there to witness a miracle, or the ascension.

It was just ramps. Not that exciting.

And the "perfect measurements" would just be something like one of those rolling meter wheels.

Would be a waste of the opportunity!

I'd go to Queen at Live Aid. In the future, that answer might change to a day like today, where my son is just delightfully cute and we've kicked around in the leaves and he told me that he loves me and loves his cat.

The Synod of Whitby in 664.

I'd love to stand and watch the arguing, do a bit of a tour around Whitby as it was then, look at the costumes and the food and the people and then come home for a cup of tea.

DoAWheelie · 25/09/2026 17:23

Am I invisible? If yes I'd go back and watch one of the many late night chats I'd have with my late OH just aimlessly driving around all night talking about anything and everything. Just Pop myself in the back seat and soak him in.

If I need to blend in / not be seen to avoid breaking the timeline I'd go to one of his lectures instead.

ThaneOfGlamis · 25/09/2026 17:25

I don't want to change anything in history. Stopping one baddie could mean a worse one takes their place. So I'm going back to the early 90's to see nirvana live.

Warn the check in staff at the airport before 9/11. One had suspicions she didn’t act on and ended up committing suicide; she couldn’t live with the guilt 😥

Assuming I travel back with today's knowledge, I'd time travel to New York at the beginning of September 2001 (because my explaining may take some time). I'd take some modern device - maybe my smartphone with lots of downloaded videos - and a range of newspapers from the following days and years to prove I'm a time traveller. I'd show the authorities videos and clippings of what's going to happen on the 11th, and hope to God they believe me and prevent those planes from being hijacked.

no one has murdered baby Hitler yet? Or failed art-student Hitler?

if this is just observing life in the past, then I might try to see enough to solve some mystery - the princes in the tower?

Ah, I have a cunning plan to dodge the baby Hitler dilemma. Instead, delay Hitler senior by a day and there's a different sperm meaning a different baby.
So; take Hitler papa out on the piss..

I'd go to Berlin for the fall of the wall, vaguely remember watching it on telly. 1989 felt like anything was possible.

If fiction, films, tv, etc, has taught me anything, it’s that time travel will inevitably lead to catastrophe. An unbreakable rule in my life is don’t get in a time machine. Even if it is bigger on the inside.

It's fine if you just visit but never change anything.

The man from 2030 told me so.

Interesting thread! Has made me think about events in my own life I’f like to go back to, and then I realised I can at any time in my memory😃
(Off topic but recently met by chance a man who broke my heart. He was lovely but the relationship ended and I did get over it. But he clearly hadn’t because as we chattered he kept reminding me of the numerous lovely fun and funny things we did together and how his friends kept asking after me for years. So was lovely to know that I can keep those as happy memories to ‘go back to’. Time I want as can he.)
But in terms of historical events would love to spend an hour watching Shakespeare writing one of his plays, or directing the cast, or watching part of the night (in 1598/1599?) when his company dismantled the theatre and moved it across the river.
