What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

I'm vegetarian now, but in the past I loved corned beef hash - corned beef mixed with mashed potato and served with brown sauce. 😋

Ah yes I can just taste the salt 😵🫣

Back in the 50's a Mars Bar shared with my sister on a Saturday.

Alkaseltzer! We never had anything fizzy at home. We visited our grandparents most Sundays. It was an hour's drive and my brother used to get travel sick. Grandma would give him a glass of water with an Alkaseltzer in. Me and my other brother were envious because it was fizzy. (Later on, my other brother used to pretend he felt sick too.)

We tried this recently for reminiscence purposes, so underwhelming 😂

We used to have ‘tip top’ cream from a tin on tinned fruit!

HoraceCope · 25/09/2026 07:13

special coloured sugar, on white bread and butter
also lime marmalade,
both only available at my grandpa's

Super mousse. Frozen mousses with a little cardboard lid that you were supposed to (I think) defrost before eating. I could never wait long enough and so ate them as a semi-Freddo.

Was just going to post this. I loved the raspberry ripple with the syrup still slightly frozen and crunchy.

Dark Bournville chocolate. She would tell us to suck the piece not chew it, and let it melt to get all the flavour. I suspect it was to make it last longer as she didn't get it often.

Mum used to give us a drink of Andrews Liver Salts.
HoraceCope ; Mum had the coloured coffee sugar, but it was only brought out for guests. I loved the rainbow bubbles it left on top of the drink.

Depends if you are a child of the 70s/80s or a child of the 90s! By the 90s, they'd changed the many layers to the crap that we are offered now (few layers and certainly no crispy chocolate like before). Back in the 1980s, a Vienetta was the height of sophistication and would only be bought at Christmas or for special occasions, I still hold a grudge towards the person at Walls who thought the newer version is in any way the same thing! I watched a TV show a while back where somebody at Walls was gloating about how much cheaper it was to make Vienetta now and I thought of course it is, it's not the same product at all.

Yes agree with this. It depends very much on the decade you were born!

Our grandparents would 'treat' us to Andrews Liver Salts in orange squash every Saturday morning... fizzy fun, we thought!

Didn't realise it was a laxative... 😆

I used to drink it when I had a hangover. I thought it just settled your stomach and made your guts generally feel better. It never had laxative effects on me.

We were the same, but Mum would buy a dozen individual bottles. Years later when those individual bottles of coke were in the supermarkets, would buy them at Xmas for my kids and they loved them too.
i think as kids we enjoyed the treats so much more as they were truly a rare treat.
Also as kids we had a fire in the best front room and moved in there for a week only at Christmas. Madness really in a small house to keep a room for best lol

Why did people do this! We were all crammed into a tiny living room all year round and only used 'the parlour' at Christmas. My mum kept the ironing in it and that was about it. Ostensibly it was for entertaining 'important' visitors but we never had any of those.

I forgot Angel Delight!

We never had Angel Delight (we had the more luxurious Vienetta) but my neighbours did, usually following Findus crispy pancakes. It was always served in a glass and I thought it was very sophisticated. I called it mousse once which they found hilarious!

DressOrSkirt · 25/09/2026 12:26

Sleeping on the floor! We temporarily only had 2 beds between 3 children so fought about who got to sleep on the floor.

Also doing the washing up, and checking if the chicken's laid any eggs in the morning.

ToadRage · 25/09/2026 12:46

On two occasions on the way home from camping with friends my Mum got me all excited by saying she had a surprise for me. The first time I came home to find my room had a new carpet but rather than the pink one i had asked for I had a disgusting yellow one that matched the landing and the stairs but crashed horribly with my pink room. The second time I had a new brass door knob! She had told our builder that i had been admiring the knobs on the new bathrooms he had just put in, not a clue where she got that idea, when what i really wanted was lock on my door.

lilkitten · 25/09/2026 12:59

Allowed to have tins of beans & sausages on holidays. And the little boxes of Kelloggs cereal.

AInightingale · 25/09/2026 13:01

A 'pull the sofa up to the fire' winter night.

God I wish I had a fire now! All these renovations and haulings-out of hearths and chimneys when it was dirt-cheap to heat your home with oil or gas, and now we can barely afford to turn those radiators on.

At the risk of sounding like the Monty Python sketch, my treat was not having to spend a day of my half term picking up potatoes in the rain.
Grew up on a farm.
To be fair Im so old we only had three TV channels, no shops or McDonald's or KFC out in the sticks, so most normal things kids have any day of the week would have been like a wish from Aladins lamp for us.
I was re reading Malory Towers recently and felt envious of their treats, and that was written in post war Britain when rationing was still in effect.

I must be older than you 2 TV chanels and even though we didn't live out in the sticks nothing like McDs or KFC existed then, maybe a Wimpy in the bigger town, 50s and 60s, the chippy was our only takeaway. I remember when the chippy started doing Chinese food in the 70s, my parents were appalled, 'not having that smelly muck in here!'.

Roses lime marmalade is still around, I love it second only to black cherry jam!

Yes true - the very idea that the kids would have a say in anything like what their mum and dad would be ordering for them to eat feels like a very, very long time ago lol

Dare I suggest that were families to go back to the days when children had less dominence in their homes a lot of the problems discussed on this site would be solved, especially now they have taken the entitled attitude into school, college and the workplace? Not suggesting that children should never have what they want, my mother used to buy liver for me but I was the only one who ate it, but certainly a reduction would help.

The closest we got was Instant Whip. It was cheaper. I loved the butterscotch flavour one.

As an ex teacher and now adolescent social I couldn’t agree more x

We did have Vienetta but that was years later. The Angel Delight never looked as good as on the box though. And I used to love Findus crispy pancakes!

Someone else that went to pizzaland! It was my favourite, profiteroles for dessert.

Yes to Pizzaland - half a pizza and a jacket potato! I still have the pizza/potato combo now when I need comfort food.

Going on holiday and being allowed to bang the gong for to get guests down for dinner in the hotel. Starters were either a small glass of orange juice or half a grapefruit or soup.
