Comforting TV recommendations after bereavement

My parent has just died unexpectedly. Can anyone recommend things to watch on TV? I've got Netflix and amazon prime and channel 4/iplayer etc.
I'm really lost/stressed/tired/upset at the moment and just looking for some distraction/comforting things to watch I guess. Thank you

Sorry for your loss, I’m watching My Brilliant Career on Netflix, it’s a period drama set in the Australian bush. Funny.

WhiteFramesandPlanes · 21/09/2026 15:16

I'm so sorry xx

Sorry for your loss. I find the below comforting/ easy watching and not too emotional.

All creatures great and small
great pottery throw down
dragons den
Interior design masters
sewing bee
masterchef
this farming life

Sometimes I think it’s better to have comfort loop though and rewatch something you’ve loved before, it’s less mental work x

gerispringer · 21/09/2026 15:18

Something funny like Ted Lasso? Or just easy viewing mush like Virgin River? Escapism ? Brigerton? The Korean Dramas on Netflix are very different and watchable and usually have a happy ending.

Theres 4 in a Bed and Come Dine with Me on channel 4 which I remember being able to watch after a bereavement.

Laiste · 21/09/2026 15:28

💐
I second Sewing Bee (BBC i player) very gentle humour. Interesting to see how things are made! Lots of series on there to keep you going for ages if you like it.

I love gardening programmes. Gardeners World is lovely, and, these days, i feel geared towards being a relaxing watch as much as educational . Lots of shots of beautiful plants with sparkling dew or the evening sun shinning through them, with just bird song to listen to for a few moments. Monty digging and planting seeds for the millionth time 😆

When my dad was very ill I watched Jonathan Creek to distract me. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Little House on the Prairie 💐

The Detectorists is on iPlayer

Snapespeare · 21/09/2026 15:50

Detectorists, Any David Attenborough. My 'happy place' remains the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics opening and closing ceremonies.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Oakleypaul · 21/09/2026 15:56

So sorry for your loss.

Detectorists on BBC gets my vote too.

I found rewatching my own favourite programmes helped me after my Dad died. I rewatched Downtown Abby, Motherland and Friends in the weeks that followed.

Not the same, but my world ended when DH died. I judt watched things we'd never watched together. I just couldn't handle the memories of watching things together. 😉

BlackCatBea · 21/09/2026 16:19

Miranda or Benidorm? Friday night dinner too or Gavin and Stacey.

HelpfulHelena · 21/09/2026 16:21

Ludwig on iPlayer is easy and silly and doesn’t need a lot of concentration

Blarn · 21/09/2026 16:23

Bobs Burgers for me, on ITV. It's a cartoon about a family who own a burger restaurant. Funny and comforting.

Lamelie · 21/09/2026 16:23

I’m so sorry.
I read a really interesting article once by someone who recovered from trauma watching detective series- SVU I think. It’s gritty but she found the ‘narrative ark’ very comforting, a beginning a middle and an end, all wrapped up.

After Life is incredibly sad but also uplifting and funny! Me and mum both loved it shortly after dad died. We cried and laughed in buckets

BerylThePeril44 · 21/09/2026 16:28

Schitts Creek? Helped me during bereavement - nice and light and funny
I actually watched all series of Auf Weidersehen Pet during the longs nights I sat with my mother in the hospice over Xmas.
it kept me going…
Though I doubt I’ll ever be able to watch them again 😔

Jackospice · 21/09/2026 16:33

ted lasso, the good witch, friends and bridgerton would be my votes. Also just any hallmark movie or series, they’re so predicable and safe. I’m sorry for your loss Flowers
