Suggestions for shoe box appeal contents

DD and I are making a Christmas shoe box for a local charity who take them to impoverished parts of Romania/Ukraine etc

The age range is 6-11 (neutral for both sexes). The charity has given a list of suggested items but also encourages additional bits, but I'm struggling what else to put in.

So far I have (from the suggested list)-
Pencil case
24 coloured pencils
A pack of pens, regular pencils, rubber, sharpener (for school)
Notebook
Soap
Toothbrush and tooth paste
Smarties
Tin of food
Small soft toy
Puzzle (which you build into a miniature farm)
Hat and gloves

I'm going to add- hairbrush, scarf, socks, small colouring book, DD wants to put her skipping rope in, small rubber ball

Can you think of anything else that might be nice/helpful that would fit in a shoebox?

I think you’ve covered all bases - it’s going to be a very full shoebox! Have you checked that all those things are acceptable? I only ask because I fill shoe boxes each year, to go to children who wouldn’t otherwise receive any Christmas presents. The organisation that distributes them no longer accepts toothpaste & has never accepted chocolate.

A tin of food?

soontobeamama · 21/09/2026 22:27

I think that sounds like quite a lot - you might want to check that everything fits in and see how much room is left before you buy any more.

I would refer to the suggested list of items again and also check what items are not allowed - they usually won’t accept chocolate or any foodstuffs unless it is a sealed packet of hard boiled individually wrapped sweets with a long expiry date. Items usually need to be brand new, so I don’t know if your daughter’s skipping rope would be allowed.

How about adding a wash cloth and shower gel / shampoo (if liquids are allowed)? Playing cards? A toy car or other small toys or figures? Stickers? Bubbles - again, if liquids are allowed.

Do the items need to be unisex? If it is for a girl, you could maybe add things like hair clips / scrunchies / ribbons etc.? Lip balm?

That's a lot!

Fidget toys are very popular for that age

darkbyeight · 21/09/2026 22:30

Magnetic tiles are a big hit with children and quite easy to pack into a small space.

bababamama · 21/09/2026 22:32

Check the rules for the scheme, there’s more than one. The one we have supported doesn’t allow food except vegan sweets because they are distributed to every child who attends the project and some have dietary restrictions

In general, don't. So many of these schemes are deeply problematic in terms of additional material added, expectations on those receiving them, disruption to local suppliers of things that are actually needed. Most of the children do not need, want or understand the items and they create more plastic waste. Give to a reputable charity instead.

UNO or Travel Connect 4? A ball of some sort. A pack of balloons. A fidget toy. Those stretchy gloves (as then they fit a range of hand sizes). A sheet of stickers.
When the DC were younger, & did this, we used to do a lap of Poundland and the Primark

This.

I grew up abroad without much. My mum's aunt used to send us stuff. Smarties, sweets and little toys were the highlight (bouncy ball, yoyos etc). When you can't get any sweets, they do feel like a big treat. Felt tips were also a huge treat as ours would dry out. New underwear too but you can't do that with the age range and neutral sexes.

mumumental · 22/09/2026 07:29

Do send a lot! I know two people who received them, and it was a highlight of their childhood.

Yes. This. And remember the cost of distribution. Donate to a reputable charity instead. Or see if there’s a local refuge that will accept physical donations. Oh, and check the affiliations of the scheme. There’s sometimes an issue with religious texts being included.

I completely agree. Most if not all of the ‘shoebox’ charities are religious organisations who use this as a means of trying to ‘convert’ the recipients with some dodgy tactics. Look up Samaritans Purse as one example.

Humanists UK warns against Operation Christmas Child’s ‘shoebox evangelism’

Humanists UK is once again urging schools and parents to exercise caution over Operation Christmas Child. The initiative encourages children to donate gifts for ‘shoeboxes’, which are then sent to underprivileged children in developing countries. It is...

I agree with either donating money (to an overseas charity) or, if you really want to give 'a thing' then give a physical gift to a local charity.

NaiceCupOTea · 22/09/2026 16:58

To reply to some of the comments-

Yes a tin of food (baked beans/soup etc) plus chocolate/sweets with a long expiry date were included on the list of things to put in. Items were advised to be 'new or newly new' so no issue with anything second hand. We cover the cost of transport by including cash.

For those saying don't bother and donate to a charity, this is a small local charity/scheme with no religious affiliations, they do all the work themselves and have been running for several decades now and do have a good reputation. I'd rather not donate to a charity as you never know where the funds are actually going (and the Oxfam Haiti scandal has put me off somewhat).

Thanks for all the suggestions of additional bits to add, much appreciated

I think each shoebox should have

Hygiene items (soap, flannel, comb or hairbrush, toothbrush and toothpaste)
School supplies (colouring pencils, A5 notebook, HB pencils, glue stick, pens, sharpener, rubbers)
Something active (skipping rope/ ball)
Something to hold (small teddy)
Something to play with (little figures… playmobil??)
Something creative (watercolour paints / felt tips and a colouring book or blank paper notepad)
Something to play with a friend (playing cards, travel connect 4, uno etc)
Something for the brain… (little Lego set, rubix cube, wordsearch, soduko etc).I think a wordsearch book would be fine, child will likely be learning English at some point so could support in school … and if not, it can still be used and not main focus of the box.
