Anyone had lens replacement surgery for high myopia?

Has anyone had lens replacement surgery?

I am a minus 9.5 in both eyes. Plus a slight astigmatism taking me to about a -10. My near vision is starting to worsen now (over 40).

I cannot have laser treatment. I have already had one consultation and know Lens replacement is what I would want.

Does anyone have any advice?
Good or bad stories?
Any questions I should ask at my appointment?
Anything I should do/prepare/ask/avoid?

I am nervous but I am at the point where wearing glasses is uncomfy and playing sport with them is a pain. I wear contacts but losing my near vision means computer work is getting blurrier. I am likely to need them replacing at some point as my risk for cataracts is apparently higher. I must use a pc for work.

Thank you for reading.

I know I am likely to need them for close work - but at minus 10 my close range visibility is very limited. I avoid swimming etc due to it being so very inconvenient.

Not for myopia but I’m off to Prague in November for lens replacement. Priced it up in UK, £6,500. - £10000. Prague for 2 of us including hotel is £3500.

@notapizzaeater thank you for replying.

I have been quoted 8-10k in the UK.

My concern with abroad is if I have complications. May I ask where you are going and did you go there to get checked out first? Do you speak the language? Etc

No don’t speak the language- they provide a translator. My friend is from Czech and is a theatre nurse here so asked her how clean / safe it would be. She says they are cleaner than the UK 🤣🤣

there’s lots of groups on FB about it. The clinic I’m going to has had good feedback on there.

Not for myopia, but for cataracts. I had severe myopia (as in "can't see the top letter without glasses"); but after the op. I only need glasses for close work. It's brilliant. Mine was done under the NHS though.

WhatWouldRoyKentSay · 24/09/2026 23:50

same @sueelleker I had lens surgery for cataracts in June. My distance vision now is fantastic. I do still need glasses for reading/close work but I knew this would be the case with the particular lens I chose. My surgery was covered by my health insurance. I can't stop rabbitting on about it, I'm so happy with the result.

I’ve had lens surgery, for eye sight rather than cataracts. Not myopia, I’ve always been long sighted, and then had age related issue with close reading. So couldn’t see well at any distance at all without several different pairs of glasses. Paid £9k at Moorfields. Had a great result, I don’t need glasses at all for anything now, I had multifocal lenses. I do have issues with glare outside, so need sunglasses even when it’s quite cloudy. I’m happy with that trade off though.

I had ICL for the same prescription a few years back, I think it was around 9k from memory, it was at The Eye Correction centre in Wilmslow near Manchester with Say Aun Quah, I had a great experience and it’s the best thing I ever did, I’m just +1 now in one eye and occasionally use reading glasses when on the laptop, the only downside is the halos at night when driving, no issue in summer but in winter it does restrict when I can drive

Greenhippos · 25/09/2026 20:59

Thanks everyone. I have halos and glare at night anyway as I have an astigmatism (I think that can cause it). I have read people get very dry eyes (currently this is rare for me despite wearing lens). I just cannot get on with the daily disposables, the ones that have the best vision are so thin I cannot remove them. The slightly thicker ones provide amazing distance vision, I can see a squirrel
in a tree a mile off, but the characters on my laptop aren’t great.

I am an optometrist.There is no way in hell I would get laser with your powers. Your risk of Retinal detachment will be even higher than it is now with any ocular surgery. You need to go to an NHS ophthalmologist for advice. Nowhere high street or abroad/ anyone in it for profit. You have only one set of eyes

My own daughter is -6 and I would be in the horrors if she got it.
Contact lenses are for her in the future

Edited

That’s the reason I had the surgery, I had worn lenses for 30 years and the last few years of wearing them I had developed dry eye syndrome, it was so bad my eyes would be stuck together when I woke and I could only wear lenses for an hour max.

FunnyCradock · 25/09/2026 21:25

I had multifocal toric lens replacement for myopia & astigmatism. Had it done in 2020 - £7k for both eyes. I haven’t worn glasses since. Really straightforward recovery. Had one done at a time, 2 weeks apart.

Greenhippos · 25/09/2026 21:25

@Radyward

Thank you for replying I am not looking at laser. I am looking at lens replacement.

Do the NHS do appointments to correct vision? My understanding was even if you get lens replaced during cataract treatment they only give the most basic ones.

The optician I attend gave me the name for the man I am seeing, they said he has treated several people they know. There was no referral process as such just a chat and I googled him when I got home. But yes I will be paying privately. My optician will lose business from me having my lens replaced.
