What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

It beeps when you reach the speed limit but I think it is possible to go over

If you floor the accelerator then it'll let you exceed the set speed.

Mine is 2018 model - will be getting rid of it soon and will definitely want that feature. I live in an area where they regularly reduce the spas limit for spurious reasons eg 40 to 30 on a dual carriageway and make the new signs deliberately tiny.

There are standard sizes for speed limit signs. They can't make them deliberately smaller to catch you out.

This. The large ones are when the speed limit changes. The small ones are repeaters, a reminder of the speed you should already be travelling at or below.

Someone mentioned M15 and it reminded me of number plates and motorways.

I had never clocked that the first letter was the area (Y Yorkshire) second letter is a sub area so some people refuse to buy cars from certain areas of the country like coastal areas as they say the cars rust easier.

Motorways and A roads have number zones so you can tell where the road started / direction

Lol, yes the towm centre is awful now
Such a shame because there are some great buildings and of course Le mans crescent
Interesting about Monty Python!

At least we could be proud Boltonians last Sunday afternoon, usually I look at the footy results with dread in my heart! It's even better, living in Norfolk and having a 6-fingered grandson who hasn't sent me a sarcastic message yet!!!

We have a speed limiter on our 2017 car and the salesman demonstrated it when we collected it. We then promptly forgot how to do it, as it was so complicated, and have never used it since.

It's incredibly simple to use in my Dacia

Redheadedstepchild · 24/09/2026 18:31

Not quite as an adult but for a long time I thought that the, "Immersion Heater" aka the big red switch, was called the, "Emergen Heater" because we only used it in emergencies.

Also, I used to have trouble reading Roman Numerals. I knew it was, "Henry the Eigth" but I would say to myself in my head, "Henry Vee One One One."

I still have a problem with appropriate use of capital letters. Maybe I have some latent German in me.

That's good to hear, as we're thinking of switching to a Dacia!

What would happen if you pickled cucumber?

It's yummy! My dd would eat a whole one if I let her.

I do a very simple pickle: malt vinegar, sugar and salt. Slice cucumber finely and leave to soak in the vinegar for at least an hour. You can add other ingredients but we like it as it is. I did try cider vinegar but it didn't have the same bite.

I’ve just realised that Egypt is in Africa, and not Europe. I thought it was next to Italy. Ffs, I’m 40!

Thank you for this, I never understood that quote, now I know, so I have learned something new today, though I don't feel a plonker about it!

In ancient Greek and Roman dramas a God or Goddess would often fly onto the stage to sort out the problems that had arise. Flying was achieved by using a crane, so they literally came 'ex machina'.

As a kid, I thought national insurance and the national lottery were linked, and followed a similar model to the premium bonds.

So, everyone who's got a job pays their national insurance.
Most of that is used for whatever the fuck that's spent on its purposes.
But a million or so is set aside each week as prize money with winners decided by the national lottery.
The lottery stands in shops are for unemployed people to buy lottery entries.
The prize money goes up or down depending on how many people buy entried in shops.

It was very recently that I realised this wasn't the case. DH laughed at me hard.

That the noun derived from versatile is versatility and not versatality

The most embarrassing thing for me is reading some of these posts and realising, aged 48, that I didn't know a lot of these facts until 5 mins ago!

Sherararara · 25/09/2026 18:16

As a child in the early nineties I remember driving in the car with my mum and older brother and they would point out left and right which of the neighbours had got pvc windows. I looked but it all just looked like glass to me. It was years later I realised they were talking about the frames.

Theotheron · 25/09/2026 18:19

The speed limiter was inherent in my 650cc Fiat 126.

😀 I had a Citroën 2CV which had central locking. You could reach all the locks from the driver's seat

UnctuousUnicorns · 25/09/2026 19:20

That to find out the price per kilo/gramme etc. of a product - if the label doesn't state it - you literally divide the price of said product by the number of kilos/grammes etc. Yes, I was that clueless. 🥾 Maths was never my strong point. 😳

I was an adult when I found out silicon valley was related to tech, for years I thought it was related to plastic surgery Blush

I'm not the only one who thought this then. Phew 🙄😁
I'm still working my way through this thread and it's very entertaining 🫣

You must have written Amazon's software 😂 I'll be looking at cleansers or something, and they're all from £0.40 to £32.30 per100g ... then there'll be a normal high street brand, normal price, saying it works out at £20,487.56 per 100g!

Oh, and for those that skived off maths:
1 litre of water weighs 1 kilogram,
100ml water weighs 100g.
This means that, unless you're buying a ridiculously heavy liquid or gel like - I dunno, essence of lead or something - you can safely assume the weight's the same as the volume for comparison purposes.

Don't forget the superior overhead aircon. Plus the extra air vents that appear around the doors when you hit 70 mph.

Hey, don't sell your Fiat short. If you buried the accelerator to the floor for five or six minutes you could be at serious risk of breaking a 20mph speed limit. As long as you weren't going up-hill.

Snow came in one door and went out the other.
