Indestructible dinner service for heavy handed family

At least, I think we must be?! All our plates and bowls are chipped and Ive just cracked a royal doulton serving bowl we got for our wedding, gutted.

It must be white though (small trim allowed) as I can’t countenance eating off a coloured plate 😅

The right answer to this depends on how much money you have to spend. I'd be finding a service used for professional use and buying lots of spares.

As the potteries all seem to be going out of business you won't be able to rely on it being on the shelves forever. Although if you pick say Royal doulton you can get lots of second hand porcelain that matches the shape of your set.

We have Denby and it’s pretty hard wearing. Not sure if they do plain white though! Cornishware is also pretty sturdy if you can cope with a coloured stripe 😂

Sparrowsandbudgies · 20/09/2026 18:33

Just get cheap ones from Asda etc and replace regularly. Not worth the worry and hassle trying to keep expensive ones nice.

I also came on to say Denby. I know they’re now closed however you can still buy sets from various places.

We have the everyday plates and they’ve survived almost 10 years and several drops so I’d say they’re pretty hard wearing.

Spaniels4Eva · 20/09/2026 18:41

When our DC were little, we had the Ikea 365 stuff. We've since gone onto Denby and to be fair, that's done pretty well too. I never worried about the DC breaking things, it was and still is DH that's the wrecking ball Hmm

NotMeNoNo · 20/09/2026 18:45

You want catering tableware like Steelite/Churchill.

PeanutCat1 · 20/09/2026 19:47

Denby, we are very heavy handed family ( we only have plastic glasses) 😬. We’ve had it for years and it’s perfect condition, any other plates we’ve had all inevitably chip at somepoint.

KnickerlessFlannel · 20/09/2026 19:54

Sophie conran stuff is lovely, sold at John Lewis and i'm sure other places. It's survived out clumsiness for nearly a decade now.

Seagulldancing · 20/09/2026 19:54

I drop everything so go with basic white IKEA. At least its cheap and easy to replace.

EnglishRain · 20/09/2026 20:01

Denby is pretty indestructible. I’ve dropped a dinner plate on my stone floor before and it didn’t break. My goodness it hurts if you drop it on your feet though.

Piglet89 · 20/09/2026 21:32

Le Crueset is pretty tough: but heavy.

ExpertlyDecluttering · 20/09/2026 21:35

Denby, ours is white plates with a coloured rim.

FavouritePickle · 20/09/2026 21:36

Another vote for Denby, I've lost count of the number of things that have been dropped or knocked over and none are even chipped.
Our set isn't white though, if that's a deal-breaker.

Silverbirchleaf · 20/09/2026 21:37

Denby has gone out if business, I believe.

I would just buy a set from m and s, next etc and buy several boxes!

Happycow · 20/09/2026 21:38

I buy plain white porcelain plates and bowls - when enough chip or break i can 'backfill' from Sainsbury's/ m&s / ikea and theyre all pretty similar! The Triggers Broom of crockery sets 😁

Yep we have a Denby set too and it’s pretty solid. Two pasta bowls fell off the top of the drainer today into the sink and they’re both fine.

RandomMess · 20/09/2026 22:05

My Denby white chipped like buggary. Went to ikea they do super thin cheap white sets, have lates really well, good stays piping hot and take up minimal space in the cupboard and dishwasher

AllHoityToity · 20/09/2026 22:06

Denby closed for good two weeks ago. Someone has bought the name so if you want to buy proper Denby, do it quick before the imposter stuff comes out!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/09/2026 08:36

Denby…. Unless you actually drop it on the stone floor it’s pretty hard wearing. Ours is 27 years old. 8 place settings. I’d say less than 10% is chipped.

LittleMonks11 · 21/09/2026 08:46

We use the Denby service every day that my parents were given for a wedding gift - 61 years ago! I kid you not.
