Summer and winter clothes

Bit of a first world problem but I’m getting older and apparently this is now important to me.

Ive spent quite a bit of money on new suits for winter (only on Vinted) but I’ve got myself 14 days of new outfits to wear to work.

I have one wardrobe and all my summer stuff and other bits are in there. Does anyone store their summer clothes away and vice versa so they aren’t swamped with items. If so, how do you store them?

Yes do a switch over around October and then again around April (keep a few bits of each out for the random weather changes). Stored in our suitcases

SamphiretheTervosaur · 20/09/2026 15:07

I half switch as my basic wardrobe is built around layers

So th shirts I use as summer jackets get put away and cardigans and jumpers come out and a couple of pairs of cropped troused get swapped for full length ones

Apparently this is called something in these days of labels, possibly lagen look

passpartot · 20/09/2026 15:08

Yes, I store t shirts, summer trousers and dresses, swimwear, holiday stuff in lidded boxes on shelves in the spare room wardrobe. One box for each more or less. Easy to get to if we get an occasional very warm Autumn or Spring day. Ok I'm lucky enough to have room to do this.

Then I swap over when weather gets warm.

I keep good wear (special occasions) out all year round. I am recently early retired though, so no need for work clothes anymore either. Which helps.

OldWallpaper · 20/09/2026 15:11

Yep, I have a couple of large boxes that I swap clothes in and out of for summer/winter.

I’ve just been doing that this weekend and am giving my clothes a ‘proper’ sort out for the first time in a few years. I’ve got quite a lot of stuff including stuff I haven’t worn for a long time.

GameOfJones · 20/09/2026 15:18

Yes, I just did the swap over last weekend and put away shorts, summer dresses that I can't easily wear with tights and a jumper, swimsuits and beach cover ups, flip flops etc. Then I bring out my autumn/winter stuff like corduroy trousers, knitwear, boots etc.

Some items stay in my wardrobe all year round. Jeans for example, and t shirts as they can easily be worn under jumpers when it gets colder.

Fortunately I have a built in cupboard in the spare room that I use. I'd hate to be looking at my big winter puffer coat taking up space in my wardrobe in the middle of summer!

elm26 · 20/09/2026 15:21

I use the bags that you suck the air out of with the hoover then store at the bottom of the wardrobe when I change over spring/summer to autumn/winter x

Dontlletmedownbruce · 20/09/2026 15:27

Yes, full turnover around Oct and April but there can be an annoying couple of weeks overlap where I need a few bits from each set. I put away very summery stuff like beachy stuff end of August in a bag and then when I'm putting away all the Summer stuff I add it into the mix..likewise with very wintery or Christmassy stuff at the other end.

Passthecake30 · 20/09/2026 15:29

I don’t - where do people put their out of season clothes? I wouldn’t want to put them in the loft as it gets a bit fusty up there

Silverbirchleaf · 20/09/2026 15:37

Yes, I do a twice swop around spring and autumn. Haven’t done it yet, as weather is still too warm.

Clothes get put in him bags and goes in the loft. I put up vest tops, shorts, lighter jackets and jumpers, linen trousers and summer dresses. Winter coats, long sleeve tops, winter dresses and heavier jumpers cone down. Some clothes stay out all year round it’s a good opportunity to reassess your wardrobe and have a clear out.

I always keep a few clothes of the ‘wrong’ season for those odd warm days in March etc.

petitpasta · 20/09/2026 15:39

Yes, I store them in nice boxes on the top of my wardrobe and I do a swap in late september and mid April. I am planning to put my very lightweight dresses and summery trousers away tonight - apart from a few transitional pieces that work when layered with a sweater or cardigan. Sandals have just gone away too and I've just spent an hour waterproofing my winter boots in readiness - which should herald the arrival of another heatwave 🤣.

When I switch my summer and winter wardrobe over I always do any re-heeling, cleaning, mending and dry cleaning needed so my boots were already cleaned.

The main ballache is ironing all the stuff that's been stored! I need to do that job this week so I need to find something enthralling to watch while i wade through the ironing pile.

cartagenagina · 20/09/2026 15:44

Yes I do the seasonal clothing switch. It’s huge drama as I have way too many clothes, and a tiny little cottage.

I am putting it off!

HeinousBeaker · 20/09/2026 15:45

Yes, vacuum bags under the bed. It’s a great way of having a good sort out twice a year too although inevitably you have a week or two where you are in the wrong thing!

momager22 · 20/09/2026 15:47

Yes - due to lack of space I pack away my very warm stuff and very light summer/ holiday stuff seasonally. Vaccum pack quilted and big winter stuff. Ikea do lovely big rectangular zip bags which fit under a bed or in my case in an ottoman bed nicely.

passpartot · 20/09/2026 15:51

Slightly off topic, but I must be buying the wrong vacuum bags. When I go to get the filled ones out they have expanded back to normal size! What am I doing wrong 😊

FlorenceLyons · 20/09/2026 15:58

I’d say about 80% of my clothes work for all seasons, but I swap the 20% that don’t (linen dresses, floaty tops, big jumpers, cords, wool trousers, etc) in a big box under my bed. It’s easily accessible if I want to rescue something on an unseasonably warm or cold day.

I do the same with shoes. Trainers and smart shoes stay in the hall cupboard all year, but sandals and boots get swapped over into a box that’s less accessible.

clareykb · 20/09/2026 16:00

Yeah I do we have one of those liftty up storage beds and very summery or wintery stuff goes in there

highlandponymummy · 20/09/2026 16:02

I've never done it before, but I have today! Put all my summer stuff in a couple of drawers. The wardrobe looks so much better and I can see what's in there. I've also had a clear out.

ReturnYourParcel · 20/09/2026 16:04

Gosh no, I don't do that. I didn't realise that people still do it, to be honest. I wear pretty much the same clothes all year round and just add a layer or two in cold weather. Most of the time I wear T-shirts and either jeans, hiking trousers or jog pants. On cooler days I wear a vest top underneath and fleece jumpers and jackets on top.

When I was a child, in the 1960s, my mother used to pack away all our summer clothes (not that we had very many) at the end of September into a big trunk and they would all come out again the following April or May. I used to enjoy trying them all on again in the spring, seeing which ones I had outgrown, trying on my older sister's outgrown clothes and handing my own outgrown stuff down to my younger sister.

I don't remember Mum packing away our winter clothes, ie coats, jumpers, cardigans and so on. We sometimes still needed those in the summer months, so I think they just stayed in the wardrobe and chest of drawers all year round. We had very few, maybe two jumpers and two cardigans each, a couple of pairs of trousers (slacks, we used to call them) and an anorak.

Same. No loft, spare room or suitcases.
I keep all my clothes in my wardrobe and coat hooks all year round.

Mine do too but as long as they are small when they go under my bed they can’t expand bigger than the space they are put in so I don’t worry about it

CharlotteSometimes1 · 20/09/2026 17:17

I do this, when I packed my summer stuff away last week I made a separate pile of things I didn’t wear this year, so when I get them out in the Spring I can put them on Vinted/charity shop.

Glad it's not just me! Thanks.
