'Brown' Furniture

I was reading an article today which stated that 'people nowadays don't want brown furniture'. This has both surprised and saddened me. I'm thinking of families who have owned beautiful antiques which they hoped to pass down to their children, with the children turning up their noses at it in favour of some flatpack rubbish from Ikea or worse!

Why don't people want 'brown' furniture any more - some of it is so beautifully crafted - it's a shame it's just going to be thrown away or sold for a song!

I have two inherited Ercol armchairs and a sideboard. I know I could sell them for a few hundred quid each if I decided I didn't want them any more, because someone else definitely would. They're very brown.

I’m just in the process of doing up my living room and have been excitedly searching Facebook marketplace for months for the perfect pieces. I am picking up a coffee table this week that was someone’s late mother’s and is a beautiful walnut wood. I’m also collecting stunning Italian side table that plays music. I’m more excited about their pieces that I ever have been about new furniture!

Brown furniture is ugly and dominates a room. People want something paler and less intrusive.

They also don't have time to 'excitedly' trawling FB market place for months on end if they have no furniture. They want to buy what they need and get on with their lives.

Really? I look at a lot of ‘home’ accounts on TikTok instagram etc and browns and dark browns seem to be the in thing

The generations are getting smallerat the same time as houses. I don't want the 6 households worth of low to mid range brown furniture that are coming our way. There was crappy furniture in 1900, just like now our in the 80s. Most of it isn't worth saving

So don’t take that furniture.. go get the good stuff

Dark furniture seems to make a room darker and smaller. I try to keep my home light and airy. It affects my mood. Too much dark clothing does the same.
Loads of good quality dark furniture in charity places and auction rooms if its your thing.
