Namechanged because I have friends on here who know I'm house hunting!

We're moving from Suffolk for work and don't know Cheltenham at all. We've visited once and have decided that we would like to be on the edge of the town rather than a nearby village.

I need to find:
4 bedroom (4th room can be small)
Preferably detached as son plays drums!
Biggish garden if possible
Pref off street parking for four vehicles (I know this one will be tricky)
Near primary and secondary schools. State schools only.
Somewhere that isn't a doer-upper. Don't mind a bit of re-decoration though.
Nice places to walk nearby
Safe area and for cycling
North part of town if poss, but not compulsory

Budget to about £600,000, but could stretch a little bit more for the right house.

I'm glued to Rightmove, but I don't know where the good areas are. Would appreciate guidance.

Thank you Cheltonians!

Try Prestbury.

Charlton Kings

Or Charlton Kings (haven’t lived in Cheltenham for a long time so don’t know how far £600k goes).

Prestbury is worth a look as PPs have said and you may want to consider Battledown or Hatherley. Close to town, Leckhampton, Bath Road and Naunton Park areas are nice but parking and detached are likely to be problematic, there are lots of terraced houses. Most of Cheltenham is safe and 'nice' with good schools and decent parks but 600k may not go far for detached with parking especially if you want traditional property. There are lots of new builds all round the outskirts where it will be achievable though I can't advise on schools or transport. Think about Bishops Cleeve, it's not much further out than Prestbury, and Longlevens is closer to Gloucester but 4 bed detached with parking should be achievable.

If you don't mind saying what area do you need to work in, that might help narrow it down a bit?

Unless up Hatherkey has drastically improved, I’d avoid. It’s just masses of new (now old) build housing estate. It has zero charm.
