How to close Barclaycard?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 19/09/2026 14:55

Does anyone know how to close my Barclaycard? Can’t do it on the app as the chat is under improvements, when you call the number there is no option to close it and no option to talk to a human. When you call the general Barclays number you have to give a debit card number or account sort code (which I don’t have).

Surely can’t be this hard?

The Barclaycard website says to send a message from the Help section of the app or call them. I'm sure if you hold on long enough when calling they would put you through to a person

From the UK: 0333 200 9090 Monday to Friday, from 8am to 8pm, and Saturday from 9am to 5pm.

From abroad: +44 (0)1604 230 230 Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 5pm.

I thought it was just me!! If you figure it out please can you post here because I’ve been trying to do this for months but keep putting it off because it seems impossible

DillyDallyingAllDay · 19/09/2026 15:13

I’ve sent numerous messages- it was a while ago- but my account is still open 🤦‍♀️

same here, unable to close

Have you tried calling and not doing anything to see if it transfers you to a person?

Send a letter

Watching with interest, DH and I both have a Barclaycard, I can use the Barclays.co.uk website (since Barclaycard website now closed) to check and download transactions, he can’t.

He has been sent a pin reader and a code, neither work, he has been told it’s because the Barclays app (just downloaded) hasn’t yet approved him for PiNSentry. Neither of us are confident that it will be approved and he can login.

We are likely to be closing his account soon if they don’t sort it out. If we can close it of course!

He has managed to talk to someone about the login problems, so he maybe will call the same number to close the account.

Ha following with interest, app says ‘send us a message’ but the web chat only permits fixed responses, so no possibility.
it was on my list to phone them next week but it doesn’t sound as if that will be any better.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 19/09/2026 18:54

Fascinating how many people are having the same problem!

I’ve seen there is a Barclays hub in my local town so going to pop in there next week to see if they can help.

I'm not trying to close mine but I needed to contact them about something else a couple of weeks ago (a bug in the website that rounds credit card transactions to the nearest pound if you try to export the transactions as csv!). The chat has been unavailable for months so I ended up using Twitter to send them a direct message. I also complained that the chat has been unavailable for a long time but they totally ignored that bit.

I think this problem has been sorted, certainly when I exported my transactions into CSV last week, I got the pounds and pence. I did wonder how to tell them about it, but decided they would sort it eventually.

The dates of transactions were also a day out in the CSV (so not day of transaction, but when it hit Barclaycard) not sure if that is sorted. It makes matching receipts to transactions hard!

I finally managed to get through to someone on the phone and I can’t tell you how many times they tried to persuade me to keep it (you’ve got such a good limit - what if you need it in future, it’s good to have it as a backup, it’ll help with credit utilisation etc; if you’ve seen The Good Place it was a bit like when they have to keep resetting Janet and she’s pleading with them/giving them reasons not to press the button). Got them to agree to closing it and it took around 2 months to fully close

OneTicklishPoster · 20/09/2026 08:33

If you phone there is then an option to enter your details via keypad and cancel it that way, without speaking to anyone
I don't think the app works ... possibly a deliberate design error

fizzyroselemonade · 20/09/2026 08:38

I had the same difficulty and eventually went old school and sent a letter. Got a confirmation letter in the post a couple of weeks later

I write by letter (post) to close card accounts - that usually does it.

teraculum29 · 21/09/2026 13:22

I just managed to close my account with them.

in the app I went to "call us", then I had to press "0" for something else, then say I want to close my account and I had to follow the instructions so and the automate system confirm my account is close and I will have confirmation in 14ays.

so hopefully its all done

HollyBollyBooBoo · 21/09/2026 16:03

Success! Well done @teraculum29! So there is no option 0 mentioned when I called the number from the app but I pressed it anyway and after a 12 min hold got connected to a human and it has been closed. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the above - like others, I did a direct call through the app. You have to go back to 'top menu' and then press 'other' - I was able to do it all through the automated responses. Obviously I am waiting for confirmation now, but I have been trying to do this for more than six weeks so I'm very pleased to tick it off the list.

FlapperFlamingo · 22/09/2026 16:36

Send a letter by post - it worked when I did this for my Dad.

Ring Barclays Bank phone number and speak to a human? It’s simple enough!!!

Nelliemellie · 22/09/2026 17:11

I have stopped using my Barclaycard, the app is too hard to set up.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 22/09/2026 17:23

I remember doing this years ago and they didn’t seem to want to accept I wanted to close them (I had two as one was a former egg card)

Ahhh @Nearly50omg if only it was that simple! You can clearly see from the thread lots of people have had an issue.
