What to do in central London for a day?

I'm going to London at the end of the month with a relative, and I'm still trying to decide what to do on the morning/afternoon of our second day. I've got tea booked in Covent Garden at 5pm and the theatre at 7:30 pm, but I've got the rest of the day to do things. My relative wants to do the lego shop and m&m store, and I'm thinking about the science museum, but not totally sure as it will probably be full of school children.

Does anyone have ideas of what we can do? Are there any good shops near Leicester Square? I'm a wheelchair user.

Are you staying overnight, how old is the relative, what sort of shops do you like. The science museum is the other side of London, you're nearer to the British Museum if you're around Covent Garden. The lego shop is packed full of children too. Leicester square is full of shops, you've got Regents Street with Hamleys for children and Liberty which is lovely. The other way you've got piccadilly with Fortnums and jermyn Street which has cute shops, you've got book shops and Charing Cross Rd and Oxford St which is best avoided.

National Gallery and Portrait Gallery are both close to Covent Garden.

There is plenty to see around Covent Garden itself (although parts are not wheelchair accessible unfortunately), and if you can get to Leicester Square, there is also Chinatown at the back of Leicester Square. You might also like looking round the Royal Opera House shop, the entrance is on the Covent Garden market side. Also in Covent Garden is the London Transport Museum.

I'm staying overnight the day before in Leicester Square, and the relative is the same age as me (40s). Thanks for the shop and museum ideas!

I hate to tell you this but both the lego and M&M shops will be absolutely rammed, with queues probably.

I’d do National gallery and National portrait gallery. You could also taxi to Westminster pier and do a boat ride if you want to see thw sights without having to walk.

@MusicalTheatreLover just to warn you but the lift in the Lego Store at Leicester Sq was out of order a couple of weeks ago so you'd better check before you go there as most of the stuff is upstairs.
There is also a Lego Store in Battersea Power Station which is generally a quieter and calmer store.
There a new Aardman/Wallace and Grommet shop opening in Battersea (not sure when) which looks fun (and better than M+M Store which is horrible 😂)

If the weather is nice I'd get the uber riverboat from embankment pier, you could take in the tate modern or tate Britain.

Thanks @Needmorelego , I hope it's back in action, thanks for the warning. And thanks for the warning about the lego store/m&M store and queuing @GreenEyesIsBack . I'll do some research into boats and accessibility, I think the tide affects how steep the ramps will be.

This is what we did on a recent visit we had a show in the evening so didn't want to venture too far,

If you go on the Thames River I’d also take a stroll along the Southbank from Westminster, look round Borough Market but not Friday or Saturday as mobbed.
