Uni care kit - ideas?

So my daughter goes off to uni tomorrow and in typical fashion has thought rather haphazardly about the whole thing so there’s plenty of posters and fairy lights but she’s going to have a shock when she can’t raid household supplies at a whim! So I want to send her a box of useful goodies half way through next week. A few self care things and cheap practicalities like manicure sets and a sewing set spring to mind - give me suggestions for mundane things that you’re thankful for when you need them!

A decent recipe book, set of screwdrivers maybe 🤔

Money would be more useful. She can buy whatever she happens to need then.

Batteries
Plasters and paracetamol
Clips to seal packets once open

Yep no one needs a uni self care kit

She’s got money but she’s out on campus and it’s the stuff you need in the middle of the night when you have a minor emergency and could do without a round trip to pick up what’s missing. But, whatever.

I have always sent them off with 2 plastic tubs.

The first is first aid so ibuprofen, paracetamol, cold & flu, rehydration sachets, plasters, lip balm, halls soothers, electrolytes, berocca, vics, deep heat, wipes, packs of mini tissues, disposable gloves, condoms and those star spot stickers.

the second is useful bits - screwdriver, sellotape, scissors, mini sewing kit, glasses wipes, screen wipes, lint roller, phone screen protectors, blue tac, cotton buds, sharpie, a few pens, string, safety pins, stain removing wipes and then I put £20 in coins in a coin bag in there.

they have always been well used by all housemates! And I would restock periodically.

Starting university away from home is hard however independent they are, and this just takes away a little bit of stress when they are feeling under the weather etc

When both dds went I got messages about
cold sore cream
burns
fevers

send a thermometer, paracetamol, burn spray, and virasorb (home bargains)

scissors

Multi screwdriver
first aid kit
ignition lighter if gas hob

cleaning supplies including one of those dishwashing sponges that you put washing uo
liquid in the handle.

Nice idea OP, maybe a nice shower gel, pack sanitary products, bar dairy milk / her fave chocolate to add to the above paracetamol, plasters etc. maybe some pens??? Fluffy socks?

RosieandRobin · 19/09/2026 14:32

Oh and after Easter I remember I added piriton and insect bite cream, plus a sun lotion and after sun. They are the sorts of things they wouldn’t even think about buying.

She won't need a sewing kit at 2am and probably already owns a manicure set doesn't she?

Only thing we made sure our boys had was a first aid kit with hangover remedies, things for illness and injury etc when they really aren't up to schlepping out.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 19/09/2026 14:32

Oh second the rehydration stuff. Lots of throwing up and hangovers
diarrhoea stuff.

They didn’t know about nearest pharmacy or didnt have the inclination to go.

ToadRage · 19/09/2026 14:33

Washing powder or liquitabs, fairy liquid, dishcloths, first aid kit, condoms, sweets, sanitary products.

Thank you for some great ideas, useful stuff to add. I’m just fretting that she’s light on practicalities!
