Advice for supporting adult recovering after a tonsillectomy

My ds (21) is being referred for a tonsillectomy. I'm looking for advice from people who have had their tonsils removed as an adult, when helping with your recovery and healing?
I've read that's it's quite painful after and I'd like to help him as much as possible.
Thanks

My daughter, also 21 is 10 days post op. I’m sorry to say, but it’s so painful.
Make sure she has liquid pain relief (ideally morphine) no tablets.

Set an alarm in the early days to give medicine every 4 -6 hours, don’t wait until she is in pain as it’s so much harder to get on top of.
Lots of ice water, my daughter used a small syringe to drink, so it just dribbled down her throat as swallowing was so sore.
she also slept on the sofa as it was easier to sleep upright.
Good luck, to the both of you ….

Jelly and ice cream, my friend lived on it after hers

Following with interest. My DS (22) has been given the option of an elective tonsillectomy after two bouts of quinsy tonsillitis (one of them while travelling abroad 😬), but he is leaning towards saying thanks-but-no-thanks because he doesn't want to take time out of his busy life for recovery.

Having had mine out twice, I recommend not allowing the throat to get too dry. Although tiring, set an alarm every hour overnight to wake up and just try a sip of water. Keep up with pain relief, lots of rest. They recommend eating as normally as possible as normal food aids the healing process. Painful yes, but worth it in the long run.

@Hoder how long would you say recovery took? Both feeling better and then back to normal?

@Zazz101 I hope your dd is feeling better soon

Thank you for the advice and tips.
He's had tonsillitis so many times and has huge tonsils, I wish they'd decided to remove them when he was younger

I had collation first time and recovery was fine, 10 days perhaps.

Second time was obviously more complicated (they rarely grow back!) so I had diathermy which was much more painful and took 3-4 weeks. Open to questions if you have any

My daughter has hers out when she was 17 or so. I had read and been told that it's all so much worse as an adult, but it really seemed quite fine. Just kept up the pain relief regardless, and lots of ice cream and ice blocks for the first few days. Then slowly transitioned to normal food and less pain meds. If i remember correctly the pain comes back a bit at a certain point in healing (a week maybe?).
But she certainly didn't complain of pain like i was expecting from Google!

She had maybe a week or a week and a half off school, and I did the same from work, or maybe I WFH, can't remember, but the doctor said work was too far away in the case of a bleed, for me to drive back and take her urgently to hospital.
