Not May but gone in Feb HT and Easter. We live near Portsmouth so make use of the 24 (30) hour cheap offer with Brittany Ferries. You spend the night on board, arrive early at St Malo, book a night in a hotel and catch the ferry back next morning.

The terminal is a walkable distance to the walled old town, so no car needed. You might want a car if staying a week to do Mt Saint Michael, WW2beaches etc. Hiwever we saw many companies offering trips out so not essential. The old town has amazing beaches and the sea is very swimable. Theres also a sea swimming pool with diving boards. We haven’t done much except swim, shop and eat (seafood is amazing there) in the old town but theres loads of interesting places to visit nearby.

Can you tell me about the 24 hour deal? A friend mentioned it but I can’t find it anywhere on their website

Frequent visitor at all times of year. Again live close to Portsmouth so an easy one as they have some great deals.
sign up for Brittany Ferries newsletter as you get to find out about some great deals. They will try to sell you their food pass which was fairly new when we travelled last year and staff didn’t seem to understand how it worked. It was an expensive failure as far as we were concerned.
If we stay overnight in St Malo we stay outside of Intro Muros - the walled city as it can be quite noisy. We stay at Oceania which is a five minute walk from Intro Muros. It’s a lovely hotel. When we last stayed we had a fabulous room overlooking the beach and town. www.oceaniahotels.com/en/?gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20880828700&gbraid=0AAAAApjRfgyzq8DF69XxMQ-4oTxyDuYNG&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkZSbqMj6lgMV65VQBh0cyyjJEAAYAiAAEgIY2PD_BwE

Nearby places to visit:
St Malo itself.
Dinard- lovely seaside town
Dinan- plenty of places to explore it’s got medieval parts and a very steep hill leading to the river.
Concale- world famous oyster capital. The quayside is lined with seafood restaurants.
Mont-St Michel. A must visit.

Thank you all, and some great tips! We were thinking about staying in a village nearby not within the walls, so that checks out.

You can also do day trips to Jersey from there if you've not been before.

The deals are weirdly hidden in their webpage. Lots of clicking required.
The 30 hr one needs you to do all the work - find the ferry out and back. Final price depends on cabin or reclining seat. 2 berth outside cabins are nicer than 4 berth ones by the way ( no hanging beds). The cabins are great and go from £30ish so with a hotel there it’s about £250 for a weekend - 2 nights/ 3 days.
They have changed the food on the ferries. Was amazing previously but very poor this year in the self service. Not tried the restaurant but I guess that’s where they want you.

If you stay to the east of the walls it’s not noisy. The main bars and restaurants are mostly in a clump on the western side.
