Relocating to Manchester

Hellooo! Myself, my partner & our roommate are relocating from Newcastle to Manchester and need some help with areas we should be avoiding. We don’t currently have any children, however it’s something we would be considering in the future and would therefore like to be in a decent area.

We need a 3 bed - (house or flat/apartment), ideally within a 45 min commute from the city centre. Our budget is around 1250pcm.

We are all in our mid 20s. 2 of us work in healthcare - 1 with a job offer at the Royal infirmary. 3rd works from home.

Areas we are currently considering which fit within our budget -
Gorton
Pendlebury/Swinton
Altrincham
Urmston

Areas we’ve been advised to avoid so far -
Moss side
Cheetham Hill
Clayton
Anywhere near the Etihad

Is there anywhere else we should be looking at that would be within budget? Or anywhere else we should 100% avoid?

Thank you in advance :)

I work at MRI and live in Stalybridge in Tameside. I lived Hulme originally which felt a bit rough at times but generally fine but that was quite a few years ago.

Tameside can have a bit of a bad rep but we really like Stalybridge and it's definitely getting some more upmarket restaurants/shops. Beautiful surrounding scenery as well. It's about a 30-50 minute drive or 10-15 mins on the train to Piccadilly or Victoria stations and then there's plenty of buses to get you to MRI. Trams are in the next town over in Ashton-under-Lyne.

Most people I work with at MRI live in Stockport or Salford and the surrounding areas.

Thank you, will have a look at that area! :)

Agree. Close, fine & tons transport links

Thanks :) Also regarding an apartment in town - I haven’t seen any on rightmove for 3 bed within 1250. Ideally would love to be in central town however I don’t think it would be within our budget.

Why not just get an apartment in town?

They won't afford a 3 bed in the city centre proper on that budget. Would have to be adjacent areas.

You say one of you will be travelling by bus, well the traffic during the uni term times is horrendous on Wilmslow Road and Oxford Road so unless that person can leave really early and finish work early then I wouldn’t live in Withington and Didsbury. I’d go for Levenshulme - direct buses to the MRI and an OK place to live - or Stockport (train to Oxford Road then walk to the hospital). Rusholme is also OK and walkable to the hospital.

As a general rule, avoid most of north Manchester.

Look at city side of salford for apartments

Hulme & Moss Side are fine. I know loads that’s live there happily. Walk to work and Walley Range or Firswood

I am originally from Stalybridge and was also going to recommend it! Good links to Manchester with the train, more affordable properties and surrounded by countryside.

The town centre is looking a bit sad with empty shops and went through a bit of a slump but efforts have been made to improve the town. There is a very active clean up volunteer group, a Foodie Friday event and theyve done up the market hall so they can hold live music events.

I’d avoid Macclesfield like the plague. The train is expensive, it’s not well connected at all to Manchester any other way and the town had nothing special about it at all.

I’d also avoid Altrincham, a town full of horrible people. We lived there for a long time. I’d be VERY picky about what you live in too, we had some arseholes for neighbours in some flats we stayed in. Properly entitled nobodies, lots of parking issues, the tram was so slow into Manchester and again the traffic could be slow just getting around.

I actually couldn’t recommend anywhere nice near decent transport links 😂

I agree and it’s one reason we never moved there - I didn’t even like Didsbury much

Why not just get an apartment in town?

I agree. If I were in mid-20s I’d look for a place in city and avoid long commutes.

Chefpig · 19/09/2026 03:45

Gorton is bloody awful in my experience. It has a high crime rate and lots of poverty.

Chorlton is lovely. Urmston, Eccles, Flixton and Stretford are all decent. Denton is decent and is a bit further commute.

If you're looking for a bit of a longer commute, Saddleworth is beautiful, green and lush, with Uppermill and the villages surrounding being a great place to live.

ChefsKisser · 19/09/2026 04:08

Chorlton is lovely but expensive so I’d look at Whalley range/stretford/firswood. Easy cycle to MRI I did it for years! Good luck Manchester is a great city
