Should my blood pressure be retaken with a properly fitting cuff?

I had my blood pressure taken this morning. I have fat arms and the cuff was extremely tight even before the test started. The nurse had to really yank on it to get it to fasten.

I've been left with a large bruise that's pretty sore. The result was high, but I don't think it was accurate. The nurse said it'll be fine but it means I can't take some medication that I really need.

Am I being silly thinking they need to do it again with a cuff that fits properly?

Yes of course. Maybe get an appointment with the nurse?

When I was pregnant and had my BP done quite a lot they would always change it if it was too tight/try it again with a bigger cuff if the number was too high! I had the same, mine was high with a tight cuff then fine with a bigger one. Not saying yours would be of course, but its definitely worth redoing if its for an important reason, which obviously it is!

The appointment today was with the practice nurse.

She really had to pull on it to get it fastened. I've had my blood pressure taken loads and it's never hurt as much as this did.

Just seen the pic, wow! I think you should definitely get that redone!

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 17/09/2026 21:22

Yes as the result was likely inaccurate and if it affects medication you need I would contact the practice, via email to the practice manager and explain the situation and how you are concerned the inaccurate result has impacted your medication and also left you with a bruise. Likely what’s happened is the practice doesn’t have an extra large cuff for the bo machine

Very lazy nursing - insist on a bigger cuff it is not accurate

Wow that looks sore and I bet it'll look worse in the morning.

It absolutely needs to be retaken. A cuff that's too tight will absolutely give an inaccurate result!

I have ? high BP. It’s never managed to be taken properly due to my lipedema in my arms. Drives me mad but the nurse insists it’s ‘fine’. I have to hold the sides of the cuff together and it always pops off. She once did it on my wrist. Who knows!
in your case I’d definitely want a second opinion. I’d email and ask for it to be re-checked with a larger cuff. That looks sore as well. Sometimes the chemist will stock a bigger cuff ( supposedly lol mine doesn’t!)

That's terrible! I don't understand how some medical professionals get to be so uncaring!
