Period pants smelling

i really struggle with period pants smelling after a couple of hours of wearing, sometimes even can catch a smell after washing (if I really smell them).

I have always rinsed until as clear as I can get them but this honestly takes 3-5 mins or so and there always seems to be a slight yellow hint to the water. I don’t think I’ve ever managed to get it clear but I’m there for so long using so much water! And then where do you let them dry? I don’t want unclean pants hanging around the house, have tried to air dry in the bathroom but they never seem to dry properly and then the smell is awful while I wait for a wash to put them in.

help, what is the secret? Is it better not to rinse straight away to avoid them just sitting damp? Or am I doing something wrong that means I’m not able to get them
dry?

Usual practice is wear in day or overnight; rinse them in cold water; hang them to dry (but this smells awful and they never dry); wash them on a 40c for 2.5 hours with a non bio smol tablet and white vinegar instead of softener.

Zoflor in the wash

No, please do not do this. Zoflora perfume is very strong and should not be anywhere near your vulva.

I’ve never used them so I’m not talking from experience but I would be washing them on a hotter wash than 40 with a bio tablet to be honest.

Blood bakes in on a hot wash, and heat will destroy the waterproof fabric. 30c max for anything with blood.

How unappealing. I'm not surprised they stink if they're laying around soiled and damp and then get washed on a cool wash.

You'll end up with thrush OP. Is it really worth it?

No. She will not end up with thrush if they are being washed with detergent. Don’t be so dramatic.

When I tried these I thought they were really unhygienic.

i only used them for 4 days then went back to sanitary wear.

i don’t understand why people like them, just use normal sanitary wear rather than messing about with these period knickers

What is unhygienic? They are cleaner than most men’s underpants.

Smallestshadow · 28/09/2026 19:53

I have heavy periods and wear them as well as tampons- much nicer than tampons + pads.

BabblingBiddy · 28/09/2026 20:40

People are so weird about period underwear. They aren't gross, or unhygienic. There's no messing about involved.
I'm size 22, and used to bleed through 3 maxu pads layered up in about an hour. ModiBodi, Wuka, Primark and M&S all do styles that fit me. Primark and M&S can't be used on the heaviest days, but are fine for lighter ones.

I have no sense of smell, but my bff had promised to tell me if she can ever smell them. She hasn't yet. And my mum, who has a very sensitive nose and is convinced period knickers are disgusting and would smell, doesn't believe me that I use them because she's never noticed the smell.

I wash them with the rest of my laundry on a "normal wash" and dry them in the airing cupboard. Every few months I give them a long cold wash just in case.

justsayingthat · 28/09/2026 21:26

I am yet to try period pants, but surely they must be washed on a cold wash only? If ever I have got blood on clothing (I.e. cut my hand and touched my clothes) I was always taught to wash it out with cold water.

Blood of any kind that is heated by hot water (or otherwise) will cook and chemically change…. like a steak in frying pan Confused

Do that and you’ll wreck the pants 🙄

Bikenutz · 28/09/2026 21:48

For the Modibodi ones, throw them straight in the machine at 40 with biological laundry detergent. If they are dark coloured, staining is not a concern. Then dry them outdoors if conditions allow, or tumble dry / heated airer if not.

You could rinse them in cold water beforehand if they are soaked with blood.

Those in my household have had over five years of use and are still in good condition / don’t smell.

ModiBodi have a wool gusset so should not be washed in bio detergent. Most period pants can’t be hot washed due to the waterproof layer.
I have ModiBodi and I do as a pp above, I don’t soak them, I just wash them as normal. Sometimes I have used bio liquid without thinking, it hasn’t noticeably damaged them but it would degrade the wool over time so I try and avoid it. They can’t go in a tumble drier due to the waterproof layer and the wool layer, I hang them up on the Sheila Maid to dry.

Which ones do you have? I use Mobibodi and they seem to be entirely synthetic - no wool. But I can see the FAQs on their website do mention wool.

runnerducky · 29/09/2026 09:26

I was an early adopter of period pants, I’ve been using them for years, and they just go in the normal wash and then the tumble drier (but I have a heat pump drier which is gentler on clothes and doesn’t get up to the same heat as traditional ones). I’m still wearing ones that are 5+ years old and never had any issues! I love them. I hate tampons or anything else internal like a mooncup, reusable pads are the best option otherwise but period pants are excellent.

I think it's the possible idea of verucas transferring from feet to fanny!

Edited

um right well I don't have verrucas so that seems a weirdly specific concern and I doubt that's what the PP was concerned about!!

And even if I did- that wouldn't happen from stepping on period pants in a shower and then later washing them in 30c washing machine cycle like I said I did!! it doesn't work like that
