Invisalign pain. Tell me it gets better

On Day 2 and bloody hell, it’s painful. My gums are sore & I feel like someone has lined my teeth with Haribo coated in paperclips. I am autistic so maybe being hypersensory is making it worse. Have taken paracetamol.

How did you get over it? Share tips & support please!

It certainly does get better. For the first few days, I was seriously questioning my life choices.

I only ate twice a day as the pain of removing them wasn't worth it.

But it did ease, within a week it was fine. Just a little bit sore when the tray was changed.

Invisahurty · 17/09/2026 13:36

Yes, questioning if I can stick it out. Have eaten less frequently, my gums are so sore, didn’t sleep much last night. Hope it does pass, thank you for encouragement.

I think wondering what hell you’ve signed up for is fairly common the first few days! I was definitely regretting it!

But it got better fairly quickly, and was never that painful again. Each new tray was a bit sore but nothing like the start.
It was the same when I had braces as a teen (not wearing my retainer was what led to the Invisalign..). Horrendous when first put on, then some soreness after each appointment where they were adjusted.

Glad I am normal! Everything is so sore & it hurts feeling my teeth move. I should have expected it! I didn’t get braces as a teenager so maybe not quite prepared for the pain. Looking forward to when it feels normal. Maybe in a few days then!

Totally normal, £3,500 for THIS is what I was thinking, but my teeth are now soooo good. My top row was always OK, my bottom row so overcrowded. Stick with it!

Invisahurty · 17/09/2026 13:52

Yes, I’ve had to keep looking at how bad they are to get to this place. I can’t wait to fast forward to next year! Owwww.

It does get better. For the 1st week I basically ate smoothies and mashed potato as it hurt to chew. It was recommended to me to put the new trays in before you go to bed, take some paracetamol and then the worst pain of the new trays happens whilst you are asleep. That helped a lot. As I had been doing them in the morning.

I ended with a week of a fixed braces to do the tiny, finer last bit of moving. That was HELL ON EARTH. My poor kids had 2 years of fixed braces. Trying to find a photo of my before and after for you.

Oh god a few days into Invisalign I wanted to rip them out and throw them in the bin! It got better very quickly, you’ll be fine

wineandcrispsplease · 17/09/2026 14:23

At first I almost cried with the pain/discomfort, not to mention the lisp and slight spittle spraying. But after a week or 2 it all settled down n felt perfectly normal.

ToadRage · 17/09/2026 14:24

It will ease after a few days. But it will hurt everytime you change to new aligner. You are forcing your teeth into a new position so it's going to hurt but it's so worth it when it's finished.

Invisahurty · 17/09/2026 14:33

oh wow THANK YOU so much! I am literally counting the hours, I can’t concentrate at work.

@Flippingheckfireyea! Smoothies & mushed avocado, a bit of natural yoghurt for the sore mouth. Nowhere near next tray yet but that is a great tip. Thank you. I took paracetamol before bed last night.

@roycroppersshopper oh thank you! Poor you, fixed braces. Ooowwww. Wow your teeth!!! Beautiful. You must be so pleased you did it. I will keep thinking along these lines.

@LuckyMoonstone Same! Oh I do hope it gets better soon, I’m lying around like a wuss. I was sure everyone else had an easy time!

@wineandcrispspleaseYes, I did cry a but last night as I couldn’t sleep. My mouth feels huge, Hooe I do get used to it .

Thank you. I keep focussing on pain = it is working. It is so distracting. Hopefully just cos it’s new, and I am sensitive to it .

Both my daughter and my best friend struggled in the first week or so but breezed it after. Sometimes a new one would feel a bit off, but it was never like the first week of hell. Wishing you better days soon !

It gets better. I wanted to quit after 2-3 days as well, but in a few days it won't be so bad. Just hang in there.

MirrorMirror1247 · 17/09/2026 14:51

I didn't have Invisalign, but fixed braces in my early 20s. There's no getting away from it, it hurts! But paracetamol was enough to sort it out. The double jaw and chin surgery I also had was something else altogether......all worth it though and I'd do it again if I had to!

Invisahurty · 17/09/2026 16:11

Ouuuch @MirrorMirror1247surgery… I would faint! I am a wuss I think. And you’re still saying it’s worth it. That gives me strength!

@Dracolinaglad it’s not just me

@Wrestling67ok, so just this week to get through. I will cross the new-tray-pain bridge when I get there! Thank you.

I get windows of no pain where I can see I could get used it it. Will focus on those!

Hang in there - the first few days are hell but it’s never anywhere near that bad after that and you will be so pleased with the finished result.

Invisahurty · 17/09/2026 17:53

Thank you @SereneFinch must say, it’s been much better in the past couple of hours. Less sore. Hoping for a better few hours this evening.

I absolutely don't want to scare you. I just wish that someone would've told me this back in the day when I had Invisalign:

It's normal to feel some pain and soreness around the first 3 days of a new tray.

But if anything feels remotely abnormal, please call your orthodontist ASAP. Unfortunately for me, there were holidays etc when I started to experience pain that was a bit out of the ordinary. Funnily enough, the pain, albeit not "normal" went away after 3 days after a tray change so I thought my tooth was in the clear and that I wouldn't have to call anyway.

After my next tray change everything felt VERY PAINFUL though. After 3 days in that tray I decided to go back to the previous tray again until I had access to my orthodontist. But apparently it was too late because my tooth died :(

As I said, I just really wish someone would have told me to just pause the minute anything felt slightly off, but it's really difficult to navigate all the different sensations you feel when your teeth are moving. I was constantly worried and unfortunately my fear came true with my tooth.

swoosher · 17/09/2026 18:27

Oh no @PinkLemon5what was the outcome? Did you lose the tooth?
I had mine a few years back so I don’t know if they have improved, but my trays always needed the edges filing with an emery board as they were always so rough. It really used to irritate me that I was paying so much and they couldn’t even provide me with smooth edges. Sometimes I used a bit of dental wax on particularly sharp bits, or bonjela if desperate. Another trick is to wear a thin surgical glove to remove them, really helps with the grip!

No I had to get a root canal but I'm worrying about the future of the tooth. The endodontist who treated my tooth didn't seem worried though. But it's still a non-vital tooth so not as good quality as the rest...
