Wedding band. New or used?

I need a wedding band but new ones seem so expensive and boring. Would you go to a used jewellery store for your wedding band?

And any recommendations in Manchester if so.

Why would used ones be less boring? I can’t see any problem with a used one as long as you don’t mind that it’s likely a ring from a failed marriage

WorthySloth · 17/09/2026 12:43

My wedding ring was used but it was my nans so probably not the same. Still love it after 25 years

clapalongnow · 17/09/2026 12:49

I wouldn’t, no. My band was new but it only cost £30 from Argos. It was a long time ago but I would far rather a cheap new ring over a second hand ‘better’ ring. That said I would be happy with a second hand one if it were family/sentimental, just not a random one.

Mine is made from gold used for dh’s granny’s ring. We had it reshaped to fit. Much nicer than buying new.

TonTonMacoute · 17/09/2026 17:52

Mine was old, but was a family one. I think older ones can be a nicer shape and softer colour. My DM always felt that her wedding ring was too thin and fine and although DF did buy her another one it wasn't really the same.

As long as you find one you like that's the most important thing. You will hopefully be wearing it a lot

MyPolitePeachSloth · 17/09/2026 17:53

I had mine custom made because I didn’t want a normal one, plus I needed a different shape to fit my engagement ring. Wasn’t cheap though!

Everyinch · 17/09/2026 17:55

Second hand, I'll assume the person had a very long and loving marriage.

CheeseAndSaladCreamSandwich · 17/09/2026 17:57

Define expensive?

I had mine custom made by a local jewellery maker from inherited family gold. Cost about 200 quid and took 10 weeks. Wasn't a bespoke design, but also not a plain gold band

RosieandRobin · 17/09/2026 17:57

My rings were stolen, I always hope that it brings bad luck to whoever is wearing it now. I know that is really, really horrible of me but they were my rings and some fucker took them.

I might wish bad luck on the thief but not the current wearer who probably has no idea the rings were stolen.

I bought mine secondhand from an antique shop, so did my husband. Was £300 for a fairly standard 18k gold band. I’ve since looked at the hallmarks and dated it to the 1950s so I’m choosing to believe somebody had a happy long marriage with it before me

curious79 · 17/09/2026 21:29

New. I want the new life of a new ring. Unless I was given the ring of eg a relative who had had a long and happy marriage

Griselinia · 17/09/2026 21:32

Definitely no issues with used. They're cleaned up, it's a bit of metal. Maybe it was from a good marriage, maybe bad. Have a little cleansing ceremony or something if you must. Either way, the old gold has a lovely colour to it that you're not going to find in h Samuel.

QuirkyOpal · 17/09/2026 21:33

Got ours second hand, two simple gold bands and we love them.

TishToshByGosh · 17/09/2026 21:34

Antique or vintage for sure if you can find something you love.

7catsisnotenough · 17/09/2026 21:42

Mine is my great grandmother's, she was married for over 50 years to her 2nd husband after being widowed. My engagement ring is vintage but bought from a jeweller, I felt sad that someone had sold it but so happy because I loved it on sight if that makes sense?

ScottBakula · 17/09/2026 21:57

Like pp I have a family wedding ring , but unlike pp if I didn't have this one I would certainly consider a second hand one .
Imo it's more important to have a ring you like rather than a new one that 'will do'
I have used https://nouveaujewellers.co.uk/ and bought my engagement ring ( new ) and also had lots of jewellery repaired here
And have bought 2nd hand items from here https://share.google/B6oQ6JzgqJqccbySC
Both are excellent and very good at what they do.
Both close to Manchester City Centre

My wedding ring is a 1920s ring we bought second hand when I married in 1976. It's a beautiful solid plain gold ring and I love that it's older than I am.

southchinasea · 18/09/2026 20:20

Mine is a preloved 1920s platinum ring with a floral pattern (orange blossom?). We found it in an auction.

Sunbringer · 18/09/2026 20:40

Yes I would but I didn’t because they cost the same used as my plain new one and I only ever wanted a plain gold band.

My ring is a plain gold band. We bought it second hand for £20 in 1976. It's dated 1925 so is now officially an antique and would sell for much more than a newer ring. I think it's far more beautiful too!
